Save your money and time. Performances by the leads destroyed the play and the story line really fell away in the second half. I expected better from off-Broadway theatre but at least I and a few other audience members got good winks of sleep. Mar2012.

I thought Mike Daisey's storytelling was terrific and unique. It's so basic - just someone sitting at a table talking, without any props or audiovisual aids - and yet it's totally enthralling.

But for me, the two shows that had the biggest emotional impact this year were Angels in America and The Normal Heart. They were magnificent - angry and lyrical and they both made me cry. They got to me on an emotional level the way few shows do.

I also really loved How to Succeed. Not every musical needs a big, powerful belter in the main role and even though Daniel Radcliffe doesn't have a huge voice, he was fine. And he's so charming! Plus, I loved the staging - I thought the choreography was fun and imaginative. I really was grinning from beginning to end. Plus, I don't think I've ever been in such an enthusiastic audience. It was great!

I wish I'd been able to see some of the shows on your list, though! Especially Oklahoma, which I've never seen onstage. And Assassins has one of my favorite Sondheim scores.

And I'm looking forward to Once, once it gets to Broadway.

I don't think there was nudity that I can recall. There usually never is. Sometimes flesh coloured costumes or almost nude costumes with strategically placed stuff but usually on the modern dancers. Romeo is all about big costumes and stuff.

Linz, the show is great overall but you should definitely at least watch this one. As the title of this blog states, it is more than “tapeworthy”. What happened to my boyfriend Spencer Liff?! Both of his routines last night, especially the one for Jordan & Tadd set to my most hated song from Rent, were really lacking. Spencer's choreography is usually so dynamic.
I also felt let down a little by Chris Scott's routines. I definitely liked the lyrical hip-hop he did for Jess & Clarice better then his "dying kids in the Congo" one, but overall I felt bad for everyone concerned over how blah their routines were.
Thank god for Louis Van Amstel.

Vance, you nailed pretty much how I felt about last night's routines. I am really interested to see how America voted and which 4 will be sent home. I want there to be some partner shake-ups.

very judicious recap! I was somewhat annoyed with the choreographers in the first half, because I thought some of them were being derivative, but the dances in the second half were much stronger. I love the Ivette Nick pairing because I think they have a great relationship, sharing a dry sense of humor. He's more mature than some of the other kids who may be perfectly nice, but come off sounding like airheads. I thought Marko and Melanie were fabulous: another great partnership connection.
Judging by my Twitter feeds, some voters will vote for their favorite song as much as for the dancers (Adele! AI guy!).
I'd like Alexander to go home so Sasha can have a better partner. or at least one she wants to dance with.

gotta find a way to watch the Canadian episodes too! thanks for doing double duty. I'm excited about the top 20 this year, unlike last year. I agree with you about Jess; hit the mute button in the interviews, and watch him dance. I could lose Robert and Chris. /the women are going to have to work to overcome the brunette MM-which-one-is-which thing.

Thanks for doing the detailed summary of this season's top 20 that I couldn't muster up the energy to do myself.
As usual, your insights are great and I agree with most of your opinions (especially about Tyce - bash away!).

During the top 20 reveal, the dancers that I was most drawn to were Tadd, Marko, Nick, Melanie, and Clarice. But seriously, in the 8 seasons that I've watched this show, I've never seen a more enjoyable final starting group.
There aren't any duds for me dance-wise. I'm a little concerned that Robert and Jess (and maybe Ricky?) are going to have personality issues that get on my nerves quick, but in general I'm psyched about tonight's premiere.
Also loving the return of the 20 but getting to keep the all-star aspect. And the smaller stage (but still miss the stage from 3 years ago).

Ha, I guess it's to easy to bash Tyce now eh? ...

As for the unbalanced dancers, if it results in the best 10 girls, then I'm okay with it. While a mix would be great, there's been a few years where some dancers have lacked the ability to excel in other styles and seemed like the token (insert dance style).

And in a way, Contemp/Jazz seems to give the best training at adapting to other styles and it may be easier for them to learn things from Hip Hop to Ballroom, as opposed to the others, who have to cross the style boundaries from what their used to.

Happy to see your reviews again. I'd love to hear your comments about the speciality mix this season - 9 contemporary/jazz girls! Pretty unbalanced - but maybe they've stopped trying for balance.
I totally agree with you about Pasha. I was very excited to see him and had to watch the routine 3 times before I managed to look at poor Iveta.
Only complaint - please tone down the Tyce bashing going forward - we all know you hate his work. ;)
