I got the scoop on two musical tidbits. The good news. Apparently the godawful Dirty Dancing: The Classic Story On Stage will NOT be going to Broadway later this fall. Apparently the economy is to blame and not the scathing reviews or the fact that it's a piece of sh!t. Well for once, the tanking economy has done a good thing! (Still, I'm surprised since people still seem to flock to the cash cow despite the bad reviews, at least in London and Toronto and everywhere else its implanted itself)
The even more interesting news?
Duncan Sheik did it. Then Dolly Parton did it. And Bono and The Edge are doing it. Now apparently, Green Day is doing it too.
I've got the inside scoop that Green Day is adapting one of my favorite albums, American Idiot, into a musical! A workshop is apparently starting this July in California (after already having had some workshop or reading in New York). There's still no official name for it yet but I imagine American Idiot: The Musical would be the working name until they come up with something cooler?
UPDATE: It's HAPPENING! I was right! The scoop was for real!!!
The album pretty much had a slightly incoherent thread of a storyline with musical theatre parallels and produced 5 singles "American Idiot", "Boulevard of Broken Dreams", "Holiday", "Wake Me Up When September Ends", and "Jesus of Suburbia".
If you remember, the video of "Wake Me Up When September Ends" was basically a beautiful little movie (with Jamie Bell and Evan Rachel Wood) all on its own:

I think the time is right for you to pitch your Blue Rodeo musical idea to the band. Hey, everyone else is doing it. Perhaps David Mirvish would want to get behind some Cancon?
