SYTYCD Canada - Prima!

So You Think You Can Dance Canada - Top 14 Performance Night - Ep. 212
Judges: Jean-Marc Généreux, Tré Armstrong, Dan Karaty, Karen Kain

DAN KARATY IS ALIVE! Though barely, what's with the slightly gaunter face? Getting older? Or something else? And shockingly, he's a lot nicer today. Whoa. Is it the water in Canada?

And he's next to KAREN KAIN! PRIMA BALLERINA of Canada. Like the ONE ballet star we've had. And currently the artistic director of the National Ballet of Canada. She's like dance ROYALTY! (And doing a great job programming some more progressive, modern and ENTERTAINING stuff for the NBofC! Check it out dance fans! I went to check out the ballet after falling in love with this show and now I've fallen in love with the ballet!)

So, Top 14 and it was a pretty great night. Too good. It's going to be a tough cut this week.

Melanie Mah
&
Cody Bonnell
Style: Hip-Hop
Choreographed by: Luther Brown
Song: "Turnin' Me On" - Keri Hilson feat. Lil' Wayne
Grade: B+

That was perfectly suited for Cody who was so smooth and totally in his element. Mel was great and it looked great that she was hitting it hard until you realized she had Cody next to her dancing it hip-hop smoothly. Which one was it supposed to be again?

As much as I like Cody and I picked him to be Top 10, I thought he was the weakest male last week and should have been gone from the bottom 3 results. I'm glad he proved wrong this week, but it showed Mel and Cody aren't immune.

Love Mel but this wasn't her greatest performance but that's based on a high standard she set for herself when she managed to out Hip-Hop Cody the first time around, and then showed her versatility in all the subsequent dances.

Here's the video of Mel and Cody's Hip-Hop:

Amy Gardner
&
Vincent Desjardins
Style: Cha Cha
Choreographed by: Gustavo Vargas
Song: "Rie y Llora" - Celia Cruz
Grade: A-

What can I say about Vincent that I haven't said before? So cute. So versatile. So strong in every style so far (I mean COME ON. HIP-HOP? From the French White Boy Ballroom guy? THAT was SO impressive last week). And now he seems to just easily float through Cha Cha like it was the way he would normally walk. It just looks so EASY for him.

Which is probably what makes it look worse for Amy, in that she looks like she has to try so hard to keep up, but I appreciate that she's trying HARD and this week, I thought she did a fairly great job at keeping up with Vincent, and I mean in the best way possible. I thought Amy was great and did the dance well, but alas, it just doesn't come off like the way Vincent makes it look so easy which just sets their whole pairing off-balanced.

Here's the video of Amy and Vincent's Cha Cha:

Tara-Jean Popowich
&
Everett Smith
Style: House
Choreographed by: Sho-Tyme
Song: "When Love Takes Over" - David Gueta feat. Kelly Rowland
Grade: A-

Is Tara Jean a hip-hopper or something? Because she was AMAZING. WOW. So impressive, especially after last week where I thought they were kind of a disaster. TJ simply got groovy, looked like she was at the best party ever and just kept going like the Energizer Bunny in a choreo routine that looks hard because it looks too easy. She just killed it.

Everett, bless his adorable heart did great and looked like he was having fun and getting down and all, but it lacked the finesse TJ had, and at times, it looked like he was looking over at TJ and trying to keep up. He did, but there could have been more confidence in his steps (which didn't lift up as much as TJ's feet did).

Here's the video of TJ and Everett's Hip-Hop:

Kim Gingras
&
Emanuel Sandhu
Style: Contemporary
Choreographed by: Stacey Tookey
Song: "To Build A Home" - The Cinematic Orchestra
Grade B+

Not my favorite Stacey Tookey choreo but when it got going, it was beautiful and moving. I thought Kim and Emanuel did a grand job with the choreo and considering all the injuries, amazingly so. Especially considering there were lifts and Emanuel had broken fingers. Still, I think it could have been a tinier bit more but bravo for the glorious attempt that seemed almost perfect.

I can't really fault anything in the dancing or the partnering but I didn't LOVE the piece by the end that it first seemed like I was going to, but I'm getting super picky now.

Here's the video of Kim and Emanuel's Contemporary:

Jayme Rae Dailey
&
Daniel Dory
Style: Disco
Choreographed by: Melissa Williams
Song: "Disco Inforno" - The Trammps
Grade: B-

Wow, Dan Karaty finally had a negative comment. Rowr. He's BACK! Karen was entertained, Tre and JM loved it. I enjoyed it and thought Jayme Rae and Daniel danced it individually well, but there seemed to be a lack of connection. Probably that Jayme Rae leading the guy thing or something, but for once these two seemed like they were dancing side by side as opposed to dancing together.

As much as I love Daniel and while I think he did well on his own here, I will say that Jayme Rae stole the spotlight again here (which may have been the problem with the whole piece in its entirety) and is still in the running for my Top 4, but I hope they survive this round, because the night has been great so far and this might be the weakest link (by default).

Here's the video of Jayme Rae and Daniel's Disco:

Natalie Lyons
&
Danny Lawn
Style: West Coast Swing
Choreographed by: Benji Schwimmer (with help from Donyelle Jones!)
Song: "Love Lockdown" - Kanye West
Grade B

That was West Coast Swing? That was more like Hip-Hop Contemp and something or another...

Dan loved it, and Karen nicely noted that Benji created something tailored to Natalie and Danny's style. Sly call. I actually love Danny and Natalie but like a few things tonight (Cody, Emanuel, Vincent), the choreo seemed programmed to show the two off the best.

Choreo aside, I still found it a little hesistant, and there was that little mess up with the hands.

Here's the video of Natalie and Danny's West Coast Swing:

Corynne Barron
&
Austin Di Iulio
Style: Jazz
Choreographed by: John Byrne
Song: "Paparazzi" - Lady Gaga
Grade A

Wow. Where did this Corynne come from? That leap karate style right into Austin's arms was AMAZING. I mean, we knew Austin could flip and jump and all and as always, he was amazing and as usual I loved him. But CORYNNE! FINALLY! I'm impressed and she got all into character and I finally felt like she showed off her technique that we kept hearing about.

Okay, so Austin got to show his fab abs (AGAIN) and the song was to Lady Gaga which is just so now (and a plus on this show), but that was HOT. Who is this new choreographer John Byrne? So far I like I like!

Here's the video of Corynne and Austin's Jazz:

The Final Roundup:

Best of the Night: Corynne and Austin's Jazz
Second Best of the Night: Amy and Vincent's Cha Cha
Third Best of the Night: Tara-Jean and Everett's House

Best Male of the Night: Vincent Desjardins
Second Best Male of the Night: Austin Di Iulio

Best Female of the Night: Tara-Jean Popowich
Second Best Female of the Night: Corynne Barron

Worst of the Night - Couple: GASP... Jayme Rae and Daniel (who is almost always on Top or near the top)
Worst of the Night - Single: Everett

Some of my usual favorite girls weren't as strong, while my usual favorite guys continued to dominate. TJ, Vincent, Cody held their groups together. In fact the individual dancing was strong and whatever didn't work usually came from the chemistry of the pairing.

Predictions:
Bottom Three Couples: Natalie and Danny, Kim and Emanuel, Corynne and Austin Amy and Vincent
Should Go Home: Amy and Everett Emanuel Cody Danny MAN THIS IS HARD. They're all pretty good. Okay, I'll say Everett

Seriously, I still love Everett and technically I think Cody should have gone home last week, and I still have my reservations on Emanuel the person and I still wish Danny could show more personality, but Everett's been the weaker link in his pairing 2 weeks in a row now.

Going Home: Natalie and Danny

I think my list from favorite to least looks like this right now (#position from last week in parenthesis):

1. Vincent (2)
2. Austin (4)
3. Jayme Rae (1)
4. Melanie Mah (3)
5. Tara-Jean (15)
6. Daniel (5)
7. Corynne (12)
8. Danny (6)
9. Cody (10)
10. Kim (7)
11. Emanuel (11)
12. Natalie (9)
13. Everett (13)
14. Amy (14)

Although it really hurts me to put Everett and Amy at the bottom since Everett is so winning and Amy has been improving a lot.

  1. Wow, I really hated Corynne and Austin's dance - the choreography, I mean. I have no idea how they performed it, because I couldn't even watch the whole thing.

  2. Karen Kane was succinct, but always spot on in her responses to each dance. A model judge!

  3. I agree! She was great, and always so poised and classy! Loved her!

I wasn't very much impressed by TJ and Everett's house routine... but yeah, it looked pretty hard... The same goes for Danny and Natalie: I thought it was the weakest performance of the night.
ADORED Mah and Cody's hip-hop and Emanuel and Kim's Contemp! I thought they were both amazing!
Vincent keeps on being just great and adorable - Amy's fine...
As for JR and Daniel, even though I really like them, that disco was really forgettable for me...

And WHY was Dan being so much nicer than in the US version???
