So You Think You Can Dance Canada - Top 16 Performance Night - Ep. 210
Judges: Jean-Marc Généreux, Tré Armstrong, Sean Cheesman, Melissa Williams
O loardy finally new judges and no Luther (who is totally the Randy Jackson of this show, and I don't mean that as in the big Black guy, I mean that in the judge with useless comments guy)! Thank goodness.
So the SYTYCD Canada Social where I'm re-posting this post, is also running a fantasy game that just started where we have to pick the eliminations in order, closest wins (with some complicated calculation to honour a general accuracy over hits and misses)
Here was my picks at the time, though I kept changing my mind, and my choices really only reflect what I thought WOULD happen at the time I had to submit:
Girls
1, Melanie Mah
2. Jayme Rae
3. Natalie
4. Kim
5. Tara Jean
6. Amy
7. Corynne
8. Jenna Lynn
Boys
1. Daniel
2. Vincent
3. Cody
4. Nicolas
5. Austin
6. Danny
7. Emanuel
8. Everett
Top 4
1st Melanie
2nd Daniel
3rd Jayme Rae
4th Vincent
Think I might win? I already want to switch my choices. Oh well. Here goes!
Kim Gingras
&
Emanuel Sandhu
Style: Jazz Funk
Choreographed by: Blake McGrath
Song: "Love Sex Magic" - Ciara feat. Justin Timberlake
Grade A-
Notice that routines with props are always fun and memorable? Now add in magic tricks! It's like an ABDC routine where they have to fit in a gimmick. And oh man, for a second week in a row, I thought Emanuel did great, though again, I will say the routine, and the style, sort of fits Emanuel's strengths perfectly. Yes, we saw him do one of those skating spins but I'll give it to him for hitting the rest of it hard and getting into the magician role so well. I still don't think Emanuel is going to do well in Ballrooms where he has to be more himself, but good work again this week.
Kim was like a sex kitten. I thought this was a family show? (Oh wait, we're in Canada, we're more liberal about these things). I think the routine was more show than dance (not that it was any less entertaining) but Kim really showed everything she's got and is slowly winning me over (again, because I have something against her for no particular reason).
Here's the video of Kim and Emanuel's Jazz Funk:
Amy Gardner
&
Vincent Desjardins
Style: Hip-Hop
Choreographed by: Flii Stylz
Song: "Boom Boom Pow" - Black Eyed Peas
Grade: A-
Well that turned out WAY better than I thought it was going to. Let's face it. Amy and Vincent are not exactly funky and dark and hard (I just want to pinch Vincent's cheeks, he's so adorable and cute). But man, they did REALLY well with that Hip-Hop and while I was hoping the middle section was designed to be a bit harder, Amy and Vincent hit it as much as they could.
I was amazed at Vincent. It was solid and while there could have been some moments that were heavier, overall, it was terrific and he was totally "flii".
Amy had moments that softened up but mostly kept up to Vincent's hard hitting Hip-Hop (who would have ever thought we would be saying that about Vincent?). No wonder I love Vincent so much. He's sooooo good at every style!
Here's the video of Amy and Vincent's Hip-Hop:
Corynne Barron
&
Austin Di Iulio
Style: Contemporary
Choreographed by: Stacey Tookey
Song: "Never Say Never" - The Fray
Grade A-
I'm still totally convinced by Austin. I'm still not totally convinced by Corynne but I did think that was quite lovely, thanks to Stacey, and better than I've seen her in the Top 20 so far. And Austin is such muscle and power that he (literally) carries her through the dance. Also, Austin may have finally been paired with someone that matches a bit better with him, and as he says, he finally gets to show off that he can DANCE! (And isn't just the amazing trick monkey that he's showed us).
Lovely. Finally a chance for Austin NOT to be in Bottom 3. PLEASE.
Tre mentions that these two look like they trust each other and that's probably why they worked better than Austin's previous partners.
I didn't think it was the best contemporary routine and Stacey has done better, but I think it showed off Austin nicely.
Here's the video of Corynne and Austin's Contemporary:
Melanie Mah
&
Cody Bonnell
Style: Mambo
Choreographed by: Gustavo Vargas
Song: "Suena Ahora" - Michi Sarmiento
Grade: B
For a moment I thought Cody was better than MelMah, but then for most of the rest of it, Melanie obviously carried the pair through the Mambo and Cody was very lucky to have such a strong partner. She wasn't perfect but it was still pretty good. Cody looked like a little boy trying to catch up, but he's lucky that he looks so adorable doing that, and with the real deal as a partner, he should be safe until the Top 10.
Here's the video of Melanie M and Cody's Mambo:
Tara-Jean Popowich
&
Everett Smith
Style: Quickstep
Choreographed by: Pierre Allaire
Song: "Chicago Overture" - Hot Rolls Ragtime Band
Grade: C
I adore Everett, but with his big plastered face smile on top of the candy cane suit, he seemed like a nervous rag doll and the two did not look comfortable together.
I thought it was a bit stiff and sloppy all at the same time. Apparently the judges saw something completely different than I did. I just thought it looked really awkward and hesitant.
Here's the video of TJ and Everett's Quickstep:
Jayme Rae Dailey
&
Daniel Dory
Style: Hip-Hop
Choreographed by: Luther Brown
Song: "Pucker Up" - Ciara
Grade: A
WOW. I thought last week's Jayme Rae and Daniel performance was hot. This week's was HAWTTTTTT!
Also, Luther needs to choreo more. Then he doesn't have to try to speak on the judges panel AND we get something like this dance. It's win win!
Wow. Okay, I don't want to diminish Daniel because he's so great and one of the strongest male dancers on this series, AND he has the swagger without the bad attitude (he seems like a peach!). Love it and love him!
But Jayme Rae. That girl is DANGEROUS! WOOOOOO!
Sometimes on this show, you're never sure if it's the dancing or the choreo. But with Jayme Rae and Daniel, it almost seems like they are the example to follow, like they're TEACHING the choreo rather than the students who just learned it. They're the standard to judge by. Amazing considering they just learned this a few days ago.
Here's the video of Jayme Rae and Daniel's Hip-Hop:
Jenna Lynn Higgins
&
Nicolas Bégin
Style: Hustle
Choreographed by: Benji Schweimmer
Song: "Canned Heat" - Jamiroquai
Grade: B-
The hustle is always fun to watch, and Nicolas' infectious smiles is always fun to watch. Add Nicolas to Benji's always fun and swinging choreos and I was smiling despite some of the messiness and awkwardness in Jenna Lynn and Nicolas' pairing.
Sean hit it right, in that they don't exactly partner well and Jenna Lynn is more of a solo dancer who isn't good at sharing. Their height differences (with him being slightly shorter) doesn't help.
Nicolas looks like he's trying to partner well, amazing since he's a B-Boy who is so used to solo's, which is probably why people love him so much. He seems like a giver (no snickering please). His smile and enthusiasm alone sells it for him and makes up for his height deficiencies.
Here's the video of Jenna Lynn and Nicolas' Hustle:
Natalie Lyons
&
Danny Lawn
Style: Rhumba
Choreographed by: Gustavo Vargas
Song: "historia De un Amor" -Pérez Prado
Grade B
Like Sean, I thought it was going to be a disaster but while Danny started off a bit clunky, I thought he loosened up as it went along, while Natalie showed no signs of her krumping background.
Sean and Melissa tell Danny that he needs to own it and gain some confidence because it's about the only thing he's lacking. He has the skills but he needs to confidence. I totally think he seems nervous and hesitant and sometimes holds back but there's such a great dancer in there. Just watching him here, I thought he would make a perfect Jets in West Side Story and would be able to tackle Jerome Robbin's difficult choreography really well. I love that he's kind of a block and chunky (by skinny dancers standards) but yet he makes his body really flow while keeping the strength of his body.
JM mentions that Natalie and Danny almost balance each other off, with him having too much technique, but needing more personality, while she exudes personality but doesn't quite have technique down yet.
I agree it wasn't perfect and could have been better but I enjoyed it and I enjoy these two dancers and hope to see more of them.
Here's the video of Natalie and Danny's Rhumba:

The Final Roundup:
Best of the Night: Jayme Rae and Daniel's Hip-Hop
Second Best of the Night: Amy and Vincent's Hip-Hop
Third Best of the Night: Kim and Emanuel's Jazz Funk
Best Male of the Night: Vincent Desjardins
Second Best Male of the Night: Austin Di Iulio
Best Female of the Night: Jayme Rae Dailey
Second Best Female of the Night: Kim Gingras
Worst of the Night - Couple: Tara Jean and Everett
Worst of the Night - Single: Everett
Predictions:
Bottom Three Couples: TJ and Everett, Jenna Lynn and Nicolas, Natalie and Danny
Should Go Home: Jenna Lynn and Everett (and I just realized those were who I picked in the fantasy pool but my picks here have nothing to do with my picks in the pool)
Love Everett but Everett and Nicolas seem similar to me but Nicolas surprisingly seems to take the choreo better, and most of the awkwardness around him is due to his height and not his efforts. On the other hand, Everett had Quickstep which is like the dance of death (sucks to be him).
Going Home: Natalie and Danny
I think my list from favorite to least looks like this right now (#position from last week in parenthesis):
1. Jayme Rae (3)
2. Vincent (1)
3. Melanie Mah (2)
4. Austin (5)
5. Daniel (4)
6. Danny (7)
7. Kim (16)
8. Nicolas (6)
9. Natalie (9)
10. Cody (11)
11. Emanuel (17)
12. Corynne (15)
13. Everett (8)
14. Amy (18)
15. Tara-Jean (12)
16. Jenna Lynn (14)
Don't forget the Afro-Brazillian Top 16 Group Dance number choreod by Jean-Marc and France at 7:30pm tomorrow on the results show, which is just before the premiere of So You Think You Can Dance Season 6 on FOX and AChannel! (Yes, the CTV network is moving the American version onto their other station temporarily because god forbid there be flow to their channel. They don't have any problems with the L&O and CSI franchises taking over their channels. But 2 SYTYCD one after another? Heaven forbid. (And if they think this way, why did they even bother squeezing in Season 2 right now?))

"Hi:
ReplyDeleteTwo things
1) I’d like your permission to (re)print your article on The new adventures of old Christine
for our website
2) I was hoping we could use your ‘scribing’ talent for our website.
The Best Shows Youre Not Watching (dot) com [all one word]
The new adventures of old Christine is one of our featured shows. We’re hoping to round up a few people who can occasionally contribute perspective (via an article/blog) on the shows – maybe a recent episode, future direction, plot shortcomings etc.
What’s in it for you?
Primarily a larger audience back channeled to your blog. We don’t pay but the site has a lot of promise and we're pretty excited about getting it off the ground. Let me know what you think.
Thanks
Well, I gotta say: I started watching SYTYCD Canada because of your posts - they really got me interested in the Canadian version! (I'd only watched SYTYCD 4 and 5 before). So: thank u so much for that!
ReplyDeleteI loved Kim and Emmanuel's routine, and I'm soooo in love with Vincent, lol! I thought Melanie, Jayme Rae and Daniel were absolutely awesome too!
Now: when I saw Natalie and Danny's routine, I was only half impressed - but when the judges mentioned that the girl was a krumper... OMG! Gotta give her props for dancing like that!
I'm really glad Jenna Lynn's going home; she's got a whole bitchy vibe about her, and totally rubbed me up the worng way...
