So You Think You Can Dance Canada - Top 12 Performance Night - Ep. 214
Judges: Jean-Marc Généreux, Tré Armstrong, Rex Harrington, Mia Michaels
It's Mia! And Sexy Rexy from the National Ballet of Canada! Sweet! Both are opinionated but fair and love them both!
It's the final round before the Top 10 and before the partners get switched up. Let's hope my faves make it through. And FINALLY they shake up the orders. A bit. For once, Amy and Vincent are not in the first half. Though Cody and Mel still are. And Jayme Rae and Daniel are still in the second half. Yes, I notice these things. Alright, onto the dancing!:
Tara-Jean Popowich
&
Everett Smith
Style: Theatre
Choreographed by: Sean Cheesman
Song: "The Joint is Jumpin'" - Ain't Misbehavin (Original Broadway Cast Recording 1978)
Grade: A-
So fun! Okay, I still think Everett has moments of hesitation in his partnering due to confidence but once he got to show off his tap specialty, he was on fire and him and TJ just blazed around that stage.
While Everett gets to show off his tap skills, TJ did a little diddy herself and from what I could tell, was pretty great for her first time. She was just all into it and is really impressing me lately and while I still think Everett had some weaker weeks (mainly for confidence and partnering reasons), I still love his energy and enthusiasm and this time, it paid off.
Here is the video of TJ and Everett's Theatre:
Melanie Mah
&
Cody Bonnell
Style: Jazz
Choreographed by: Melissa Williams
Song: "Glory Box" - Portishead
Grade: B+
Mel Mah is a vampire and Cody's the virgin. I'd laugh if it didn't work but thanks to Mel, she totally got into character (Cody as a virgin I imagine didn't seem as much of a stretch just cause he seems so boyishly innocent) and took hold of the dance (as always). I loved that Mia pronounced her love for Cody but still pointed his weaknesses in non-Hip-Hop related dances. Meanwhile, Mel we know is a great dancer but she continues to surprise me by the way she gets into CHARACTER each time too.
MAHMAZING!
Here is the video of Melanie and Cody's Jazz:
Corynne Barron
&
Austin Di Iulio
Style: Salsa
Choreographed by: Tony Meredith and Melanie LaPatin
Song: "I Know You Want Me (Calle Ocho)i" - Pitbull
Grade B+
Corynne's good but I still feel she seems a little delicate and frail next to the power that is Austin. Austin seems totally into the Salsa while Corynne, while living up to the movies, seems fragile. I'm still impressed by those solid flips and lifts but I think that's just because having Austin there to do the heavy lifting would instill confidence in anybody.
Thankfully Mia totally calls her on it and on her forced sensuality, but praises Austin for going for it. Whew. I hope Austin is safe and survives to the Top 10 and Rex Harrington confirms that Austin is one of the strongest men this season.
Here is the video of Corynne and Austin's Salsa:
Kim Gingras
&
Emanuel Sandhu
Style: Hip-Hop
Choreographed by: Luther Brown
Song: "Respect my Conglomerate" - Busta Rhymes feat. Lil Wayne & Jadakiss
Grade A-
Well that wasn't as horrific as the last time Emanuel had to do Hip-Hop! Thank goodness. It still doesn't help that Emanuel has to dance Hip-Hop next to Kim who is a Hip-Hopper but he was good and got better as the piece went along.
Kim was amazing and just showed her thing. Not much to else to say really. Mia mentions Kim is her favorite male of the night. Rex put them on the Sexy Rexy rocket.
Here is the video of Kim and Emanuel's Hip-Hop:
Jayme Rae Dailey
&
Daniel Dory
Style: Contemporary
Choreographed by: Blake McGrath
Song: "It Must Have Been Love" - Kari Kimmel
Grade: B+
I love Daniel and he's a great dancer but he's not the best actor out there. He tries, but he's like that B-list actor that belongs on The CW. But Jayme Rae is an award winner and puts all her emotions into everything and puts the heart and heart wrenchingness of the piece all out there.
Rex calls Daniel on the lack of soul in dances outside his genre. I still think technically he did quite well, especially as a Hip-Hopper, but he was probably overthinking it and concentrating on hitting the moves (which he did) and thus it showed in the focus on his face.
JM cries about Jayme Rae. Cause she's amazing. Of course it would be more effective if he didn't already cry at everything but whatever, JR rocks!
Here's the video of Jayme Rae and Daniel's Contemporary:
Amy Gardner
&
Vincent Desjardins
Style: Jive
Choreographed by: Tony Meredith and Melanie LaPatin
Song: "Poy Time" - Chubby Checker
Grade: A-
Mia could just bite Vincent. HEY. That's what I was going to say. I could totally just bite Vincent. Eat up that cutiepie! Those beady eyes, those legs. That butt! Oh delish! I even love that he doens't really have a six pack and is as pasty as dough and can STILL dance like that.
Okay, so it's Vincent's style and of course he was awesome but lets not forget that he's been excellent in EVERY dance style (need I remind you of his Hip-Hop?). I mean, his Jive was just perfection.
Amy did a great job. She still pales in comparison to Vincent but it was good and she pulled her own weight and kept up.
Here's the video of Amy and Vincent's Jive:

The Final Roundup:
Best of the Night: Kim and Emanuel's Hip-Hop
Second Best of the Night: Tara-Jean and Everett's Theatre
Third Best of the Night: Amy and Vincent's Jive
Best Male of the Night: Vincent Desjardins
Second Best Male of the Night: Austin Di Iulio
Best Female of the Night: Kim Gingras
Second Best Female of the Night: Melanie Mah
Worst of the Night - Couple: Um... by default? Corynne and Austin? Mel and Cody?
Worst of the Night - Single: Cody Bonnell?
At this point, I'm really finding a separation between the teams with one dancer being slightly stronger than the other.
Tara Jean, Austin, Vincent, Melanie, Jayme Rae, and Kim need to be in the Top 10. Unfortunately, they represent 6 different teams meaning 3 of them are in trouble tomorrow no matter what. Of the other six, everyone still did a great job this week, and my bias generally stems from the previous weeks and my own personal unsubstantiated opinions based on vibes.
Predictions:
Bottom Three Couples: Corynne and Austin, Melanie and Cody, Amy and Vincent
Should Go Home: Amy and Cody
Going Home: Corynne and Cody
I think my list from favorite to least looks like this right now (#position from last week in parenthesis):
1. Vincent (1)
2. Austin (2)
3. Melanie Mah (4)
4. Jayme Rae (3)
5. Tara-Jean (5)
6. Kim (10)
7. Daniel (6)
8. Everett (13)
9. Emanuel (11)
10. Corynne (7)
11. Cody (9)
12. Amy (14)
