SYTYCD6 - The Tiny Degrees Of Separation Between the Six
So You Think You Can Dance - Final 6 Performance Night - Ep. 623
Judges: Nigel Lythgoe, Mary Murphy, Adam Shankman
So, here we are. Already at the final performance night. ALREADY? Didn't this just feel like it started? I feel like I'm still trying to get to know these dancers, yet here we are ready to pick the winner. (You can thank FOX for the truncated and rushed season).
We're also just about to end the decade so to get into the list making spirit, I made a special list ranking ALL (except S1) the Top 10 dancers from both the American and the Canadian show (I've seen some Australia, Poland and Netherlands but don't know the dancers well enough to add them in, but I can say, there are great dancers around the world!). Here's my SYTYCDworthy list (w/ Videos) and here it is in List Format. It's MY personal ranking, but do you agree? Disagree?
Anyways, back to this final performance episode this season which manages to cram in 9 dances mixing all the remaining 6 dancers with new partners in 1 hour, but thus excises any Group dance or All-Boys/All-Girls dances (though here's a clip of the Top 6 dancing on Ellen today)
Kathryn McCormick &
Ryan Di Lello Style: Samba
Choreographed by: Jason Gilkison
Song: "Magalenha" - Sergio Mendes
Grade: A
I'm not sure how well they actually danced it because I was sort of annoyed that it's this song AGAIN (seriously, there's no other music to dance to?) and sort of drooling while watching Ryan's pecs.
Okay, I kid. Kind of. But Kathryn is just so controlled with her movements and looks absolutely fabulous. And Ryan uses his strength to his advantage and while this is already his style, he makes it look so strong.
I think Russell deserves to win as much as everyone else. Russell has fought his way through this season with injured partners, not standout routines, all these ballroom numbers and excelled through all of it. While there are better dancers in your opinion Russell's talents plus charisma and personality draw me in more to rooting for him. You may feel that Russell was pimped heavily tonight but til last week I thought Russell was screwed msot of this season. All these ballroom numbers, others were getting Travis, Sonya, & these great routines, and he did all this without being catered to like other ppl *coughLegacycough*. Anyway I thought this was very good show all of them deserve to be there and this top 6 IMO is the right top 6. While everyone did good Kathyrn/Jakob/Russell really stood out from the others and I can see Jakob coming in 3rd with Kathryn/Russell second with Russell winning.
Let's fire the judges and put a panel of bloggers up there, starting with you! Great talent, dancing, partnership and heart was on that stage, but was ill-served by being crammed into one hour. But the magic of DVR means I'll get to watch again before the show tonight. I think Russell was hemmed in by an absolutely stupid producer narrative. Instead of letting his great combo of buccness and sweetness play out (as in his Santa solo), they gave him a blatantly phony "street" story, and ignored the real street story of Legacy. I'm glad he got to show us that paso, the contemporary and one of the two decent hip hop numbers of thw whole season (and that's not saying much really) to take the edge of the orgy of contemporary pimping that this show has become, just when they lost Mia and made poor use of Wade. Oh, well, I'll stop whining and say that I seriously love each of these contestants for different reasons, and will be thrilled if Ellenore or Kathryn or Russell or Jakob win, in that order.
Totally agree with your thoughts and review. After watching them on "Ellen" I too think that we're in for a Russell win. And I'll feel the same way about it as I did when Joshua beat out Katee in S4; not upset, just sort of disappointed. My biggest beef with this season remains the change in stage/venue. It made it nearly impossible for the viewing audience to develop connections with the dancers.
Even the handful of standout routines from this season could've been that much more powerful if they'd been performed on the old stage.
Also does anyone know about whether/when these Season 6 folks will be going on tour?
