SYTYCD6 - W8 WHAT? L, M, NOPe

So You Think You Can Dance - Top 8 Results Night - The Cut From 8 to the Final 6 - Ep. 622
Judges: Nigel Lythgoe, Mary Murphy, Adam Shankman

Top 8 7 Group Dance
Style: Jazz
Song: "Pon the Floor" - Major Lazer feat. VYBZ Kartel (Samantha Ronson remix)
Choreographed by: Sonya Tayeh
Now THAT'S a group dance! One with clarity and cohesion and unity and still can have a distinct feel and personality! Plus with Ashleigh still out, the dance still worked with one missing dancer. I'd single out the dancers but I started typing how good Kathryn looked, then how good Ellenore looked, then how good Jakob looked and so on and realized I typed in all 7 names.

An Asian singing group called The Wonder Girls performed and they were SOOOO ASIAN. I had bad Hong Kong variety show flashbacks (that would play in the background as we kids did our own thing while the parents played mah jong).

Then Kris Allen performed "Live Like We're Dying".

Oh. LOVE! I tweeted this earlier but it needs to be repeated:
Kris Allen + Guitar > Adam Lambert + crotches + spectacle + gay kiss + controversy + costumes + makeup.

AND Kris sings in tune live! Imagine that?! Anyways, back to the dancers:

My Predictions from the Top 8 Performances:

Bottom Four: Kathryn, Ashleigh, Ryan, Russell
Should Go Home: Ashleigh and Russell
Going Home: Ashleigh and Ryan

The actual results were:

Bottom Four:
Mollee, Ellenore, Ryan, Legacy

Okay. The top 8 were pretty damn good and getting pretty even, and any differentiation between the dancers now comes to things they've done in the past and personal preferences. But seriously, there is a clear Top 4 and they include Legacy and Ellenore. WHAT THE HECK IS GOING ON HERE AMERICA?

So they all do new solos:
Legacy Perez to "Flashing Lights" - Vitamin String Quartet
Ellenore Scott to "Hajnal" - Venetian Snares
Ryan Di Lello to "Din Da Da" - Kevin Aviance
Mollee Gray to "You'll Find A Way" - Santigold (Switch & Sinden Remix)

Here are the girls solos:

Here are the guys solos:

So of the bottom four, it's not so much that I want Mollee and Ryan to leave, but I really want Ellenore and Legacy to stay. Well, I got half my wish.

In the end, Mollee Gray was cut, which I'm kind of fine with. While her dancing has been amazing these past few weeks, she had a few bum weeks with Nathan and her personality still irks me a bit sometimes.

Then Ryan gets moved onto the finals which means Legacy Perez is the last man cut before the finals.

Wait. WHAT???

EXCUSE ME CAT DEELEY? SAY WHAT?

ACK. SO MAD. Legacy was pretty much tied with Jakob, Ellenore and Kathryn for my top spot. Of the "street" dancers, as much as I love Russell's dancing and personality, I thought Legacy has had more WOW factor (maybe partly due to choreography) with better solos (except this week). Man, that's rough.

So, there you have it.

The Final 6.

Ashleigh, Ellenore, Jakob, Kathryn, Russell and Ryan.

I wonder how they're going to do this one? Just one pairs or mix and match (which might be a logistical nightmare in rehearsals). Or just sticking to one pair with a group dance?

I wish it went back down to Final 4, if only so we can get another group dance in too. I realized we've only had 5 so far this season. Shame.

Anyways, I'm going to clear my anger to get ready for Thursday night's stop of the So You Think You Can Dance Canada Season 2 Tour in Toronto!!! WOO!!! Vincent! Austin! Mel! Tara-Jean! Jayme Rae! Everett! Here I come!!!

  1. I was so mad at tonight's show. The only reason Ashleigh is in the final 6 is her "plight" on last nights show and Ryan's fake tears. Seriously, I'm pissed and I don't even like Mollie that much. Okay, I've got that off my chest and now I have to comment on your Adam Lambert dig: you're deaf if you think Kris Allen is better. Sorry. Not really. ;)

  2. I'm so sad Legacy did not make it to the finale. He has been my favorite dancer all along, but he couldn't overcome the "bboys only do tricks, they're not real dancers" edit,no matter how musical he was, how original he was, how humble he was. Ellenore's solo was great, and even though Mollee picked up her game in the last few weeks, Ellenore is a better candidate for the finale in my view because she has a far greater range of movement and character.
Have a great time at the tour!!

  3. I guess it's a matter of taste - I would put Kathryn and Russell at the top top top! Ellenore's solos are all boring and uneventful. Kathryn is simply smokin hot! I like Legacy but Russell is so charismatic. But I agree with you - Ryan over Legacy is horrible, especially when comparing their two solos!!!
Thanks for your continued blogging on the show and for providing great access to video clips, this is my first place to come if I've missed anything. xoxo Patrick

  4. Kian, did you HEAR Adam's vocals at the AMA's? That's better than ANYTHING? Lol. please.

Russell was at the top for me. I actually have him in my fantasy pool picks up there but I just felt Legacy has kept building while Russell has stayed good but hasn't had any movement up. You know? But yah, it's all so close that whatever, I just want to see them live!

  5. Vance: do you judge every singer by one performance? He admits his vocals were bad and they were - that I can agree with. But every other performance he has done has been far better than anything that Kris Allen has done. Kris is more of a musician than a singer.

  6. I know I know I kid. But I actually like Adam more as a person than a singer. Sorry, everytime he screeches into those rock yells, my ears hurt. I know most people love it. I don't.

I find Kris does more with less. Oh well, that's just me and I'll defend underdog Kris!

I also think that as soon as Ashleigh came out with her arm in a sling, her fans were dialing. I don't think Ryan really needed those fake tears. I think as soon as America smells a wiff of underdog, they start dialing.

(With Kris, it worked in my favour, here, not so much. Poor Legacy)

  7. I like Kris too. Actually his pre-idol stuff is my favorite - when its just him and his guitar singing a slow beautiful song, he is awesome. I wish he didn't have to sing that song he did last night - its too pop-y, not heartfelt and it stretched his vocals too thin. He needs to stop belting - it doesn't work for him, imo.

Ashleigh, Ashleigh, Ashleigh. I don't even know where to begin. I never liked her very much; her personality turns me off. And then when she practically started begging on stage, I wanted to slap her. She was well within her right to ask for votes despite not performing, but the cloying way in which she did it felt fake and over the top. Her manipulation (and Ryan's fake tears) obviously worked, which just pissed me off even more. I don't like it when people are not judged on their performance, but on their "connection" with the audience. I want great dancing, that's it... the rest is filler.

I still love Jakob though. He needs to up the ante and really lay it all on the stage. When he does that, people will want him to win. Otherwise, I think Russell might take it.

  8. I forgot to add this about Ashleigh: any girl that pretty can't be trusted. ;)

  9. It's too bad the judges weren't allowed to have one "save" like American Idol had last season. I am sure Nigel and Adam would have used it for Legacy, I am not sure about Mary though, she loves Ryan so much.
