Meet the Parents - Parenthood & Sons of Tucson - Pilot Reviews

Parenthood - Pilot, Man Vs. Possum - Eps. 101-102 (Tuesdays at 10pm on NBC)
Sons of Tucson - Pilot - Ep. 101 (Premieres Sunday Mar. 14th on FOX at 9:30pm)

Two new shows this spring take a very different approach to parenting.

NBC's Parenthood is basically a classier, more bland version of Brothers & Sisters. Even the family dinner table scenes look similar. But where Brothers & Sisters have a strong matriarch in Sally Field's Nora Walker, Parenthood's Bonnie Bedelia isn't given much to do yet, mainly because her husband Craig T. Nelson is so intense.

But what makes Brothers & Sisters so much fun is that it's a trashy soap acted by an A-list cast.

On Parenthood, it's a terrific cast doing mildly interesting stories in this intergenerational family drama that is light on the laughs and delves into potentially dramatic, but tedious storylines. I love Peter Krause (Six Feet Under) but do we really need to see him and Monica Potter (who already can be so easily aggravating) deal with their son's Asperger's syndrome? (Is Asperger's the new Autism for TV?) It's sets up some great dramatic and dark moments, but the reality is, it's going to be a tedious storyline in the long run and as truthful or realistic as that situation it might be, it's already becoming grating.

At this point, I'm willing to buy into Erika Christensen's overambitious Julia and her hot husband Sam Jaegar (Eli Stone). I'm a little fearful of Dax Shepard and his newfound discovery of an existing son, and Craig T. Nelson's intense patriarch comes off a bit strong.

However, while Lauren Graham wasn't originally part of the show, and I worried that her Lorelai Gilmore persona would seep through, Graham's Sarah and her disheveled family gives the heart and passion the show needs to uplift it from it's middlebrow middle class blandness. Graham's scenes with guest Mike O'Malley during a blind date sister Julia has set up is funny and heartbreaking. Graham's job interview that her father secretly sets up was heartbreaking and funny. Add in an amazing Mae Whitman (Arrested Development) as her troubled daughter Amber, and a wonderfully woeful Miles Heizer as son Drew, and this trio amongst the huge ensemble creates an intimate portrait of a struggling family transitioning into their grandparents household and is easily the most moving piece of the show.

The show could throw in a bit more fun, as it will never intensify the drama enough to reach the points of the better executed family drama Friday Night Lights (by the same production team).

Over on FOX, the half-hour sitcom Sons of Tucson debuts this weekend and it's a light and amusing show that seems unnecessary, but comforting.

When 3 brothers lose their father to prison, they scheme to hire a sad sap of a loser to act as their father. It's ripe for old traditional sitcom shenanigans, while filmed in a one-camera format. With Reaper's Tyler Labine (perfecting his schtick that hasn't changed since Breaker High) as lovable loser Ron, he makes a deal to become a pretend parent to the Gundersen kids, and the boys take Ron for quite the ride. To be honest, I was amused by the all the antics. Obvious? Yes, but still funny and likable. Labine is... well Labine and the three kids, Frank Dolce, Matthew Levy and Benjamin Stockman are kinda precious and precocious without being too irritating.

It's not a show I will need to watch all the time, but it makes for nice diversion entertainment and would have been a perfect summer show. My fear is that like it's predecessor Malcolm in the Middle (whose producing team is now working on this with Justin Berfield, one of the sons from Malcolm), the concept will tire easily and fast, and remain solely on the shoulders of its great cast.

At this point Parenthood gets *** (out of 5) from me and most of that goes to Lauren Graham and Peter Krause, while Sons of Tucson gets **1/2 (out of 5) for now. Both are generally entertaining but lack that extra punch for required viewing, although Parenthood has that built in potential with the cast and set up.

Ol' Blue Eyes - White Collar - Pilot Review

I'm sure New Yorkers (and other cities that have been plastered with USA's ad campaign) have noticed the piercing blue eyes on the posters for the new show White Collar which premieres on USA this Friday, Oct. 23rd at 10pm (BravoCanada starts airing it a week later starting Fri. Oct. 30th).

Well, that's Matthew Bomer (Chuck, Traveller) and he stars as a white collared criminal con artist who escapes prison 3 months prior to release to chase after his girlfriend, only to be caught by Fed Tim DeKay. Some deal is cut and Bomer is out under DeKay's watch and working to help solve con crimes. It's a fun concept that lets Bomer play a smooth criminal who not only wins the trust of a rich lady (the regal Diahann Carroll in a re-occuring role), but manages to help DeKay catch some criminals.

USA seems to be doing well with these male oriented breezy-feel shows (Burn Notice, Royal Pains) and White Collar, while not as zippy or humourous as Burn Notice, follows in the same crime fighting vein with an overarching story and what looks like a case of the week to solve.

In addition to the excellent Tim DeKay, the ensemble is filled out with Tiffany Thiessen (forever Kelly Kapowsky to me, but does a nice subtle job here) as DeKay's wife, and Willie Garson (Stanford from Sex and the City) as one of Bomer's connections.

While I didn't love the pilot, I enjoyed it enough to keep with it for now, and it's fun to see Bomer smooth talk his way around his con games, with DeKay sadly keeping watch. It's a nice start for the show to build upon so it can still go either way, but so far the cast and the relaxed feel for the show seems like perfect USA fare. They sort of seem to be making well made shows that once would have been syndicated, only now are made with more intelligence and charm.

White Collar gets *** stars for now, though it has potential to easily go up or down. And if Royal Pains is any indication, it go easily go up. RP had a shaky pilot but got better very fast, and turned out to be an enjoyable summer show.

Showworthy - My Take on the New Shows So Far

Here are my 2 cents on the new shows for this Fall 2009 season so far, from Best to Worst:

  • Glee (Series Premiered Sept. 9) FOX/Global Wednesdays 9pm ***** - Pilot, Showmance, Acafellas, Preggers - Eps. 101-104

  • Well, you knew I was going to love this, but I'm surprised it's getting such quick backlash usually reserved for the big show of the year. Yes, it's getting tons of PR from Fox (shockingly) but the musical TV show is still an underdog (and netting only abotu 6-7 million viewers which isn't huge in the overall picture) and I think its genre will always make it so. I know this show just won't be for some, but I've been surprised at who has been hating it and who hasn't.

For one, a major complaint is it's constantly changing tones and cheesiness. To me, that's the shows biggest asset. I love that the show changes from complete absurdity to a heartfelt moments to a cheesy musical number. It's hyperkinetic, absolutely ridiculous and thus completely winning and hysterically funny.

I'm also willing to be patient as the episodes slowly introduce all the characters into the mix, recently adding in Puck and Quinn Fabray more into the central storylines, and fleshing out Kurt and Sandy. I know everyone loves Jane Lynch's Sue Sylvester and we all want Lea Michelle's Rachel Berry to sing everything but it's a SERIES, not a movie, so there's a whole lot more coming people. Patience!

Anyways, I'm just still loving it all and looking forward to where it's all going. Plus with the great Broadway star guest appearances (so far, Victor Garber, Debra Monk, Josh Groban (well, not Broadway but he did do Chess galas) and Kristin Chenowith this week), I can't wait to see what else they do with the glee club this year!

And if anything, even if the show ends up tanking, the larger world will now know the tremendous voice of Lea Michelle. Seriously, her "Take A Bow" is even better than Rihanna's original. I can't wait for Michelle and Cory Monteith's updated version of "No Air". Finally there will be a version to replace the Chris Brown one.

  • Modern Family (New Series Premiered Sept. 23 2009) ABC/CITY Wednesdays 9pm ****1/2 - Pilot - Ep. 101

  • While it's almost like a toned down, more realistic and less absurd Arrested Development, it's also a modern version of the family sitcom. In both style and substance. The title couldn't be more correct.

The jokes are subtle and observant, the hilarity and awkwardness rings true, and every character in the large extended family of 10 (including the kids) is distinct. Okay, not all the jokes are subtle, but when they're big (like the "Lion King" entrance), they're absolutely hilarious.

Plus the cast includes my faves Julie Bowen (Ed, Boston Legal), Ty Burrell (Back to You) and Jesse Tyler Ferguson (The Class) and Ed O'Neill is back! And makes Sofia Vergara lovable!

  • FlashForward (New Series Premiered Sep. 24 2009) ABC/ATV Thursdays 8pm - ***1/2 - No More Good Days - Ep. 101

  • Okay, so essentially it's Lost Lite, and even includes Lost alum Sonya Walger and Dominic Monaghan in the cast. It even opens similarly with a our lead Joseph Fiennes waking up disoriented and in the middle of some sort of mysterious disaster with big explosions included. Flashbacks, flashforwards, a huge ensemble, and an apparently billboard with Oceanic 815 in the background (I didn't see it but apparently it was there) and the show seems to resemble the fellow ABC show.

Who cares? I was thoroughly entertained, I got into the mystery (and if it is lighter, that might be a relief since Lost is taking up too many brain cells) and I LOVE the ensemble cast which includes John Cho (Harold and Kumar), Joseph Fiennes (Shakespeare in Love), Sonya Walger (Lost, Coupling US), Jack Davenport (Coupling UK), Brian F. O'Byrne (Broadway's Doubt), and Courtney B. Vance (L&O: Criminal Intent) and I noticed Shohreh Aghdashloo will show up in future episodes. Can't wait!

Plus, Zachary Knighton, the suicidal doctor is a cute find!

  • Community (New Series Premiered Sep. 17 2009) NBC/CITY Thursdays 8:30pm - ***1/2 - Pilot, Spanish 101 - Eps. 101-102

  • Joel McHale. What can I say? I just love the man. And the series, while not perfect, is amusing and enjoyable and had a better start than Parks & Recreation (which at least, has gotten better this season). Plus, you know, I love me some Joel McHale wherever and whenever I can get it.

Even Chevy Chase isn't annoying me and in fact, is part of a great ensemble that surrounds McHale.

  • The Good Wife (New Series Premiered Sept. 22 2009) CBS/Global Tuesdays 10pm - *** - Pilot - Ep. 101

  • A solid standard drama about a woman scorned and restarting her life as a working mother. While I'm not a Julianna Marguilies fan, I always forget that I do like her when she's on TV. And with the ensemble that surrounds her, with Christine Byranski (The Big Bang Theory, The Birdcage)! Josh Charles (Sports Night)! Matt Czuchry (Friday Night Lights, Gilmore Girls)! Archie Panjabi (Bend it Like Beckham, The Constant Gardener)! Even the son is played by Graham Phillips who made his Broadway debut last season in the underrated musical 13!

While the show is essentially standard lawyer show mixed with working mom mixed with spurned wife, the cast alone elevates the material and with some smooth direction, I thoroughly enjoyed the pilot so far.

  • The Vampire Diaries (New Series Premiered Sep. 10 2009) The CW 8pm/CTV 7pm - *** - Pilot, Night of the Comets, Friday Night Bites - Eps. 101-103

  • I liked this FAR more than I thought I would, and think I should. But it's like a return to old style WB dramas, and not unexpected since it's Dawson's Creek's Kevin Williamson at the helm. Plus I'm kinda digging the collision of Panther worlds Degrassi:TNG with star Nina Dobrev and Friday Night Lights' Zach Roerig (he was evil Cash). Plus add in faves Ian Somerhalder from Lost and mini-Ephram Steven R. McQueen (above with Dobrev) from Everwood, and the series is a whole lot more fun than it probably deserves to be. Love the angsty atmospheric aura (how many fog machines does the production have anyways?) and the show somehow stays on earnestness without falling into high camp, all while being a vampire show and somehow it all works.

I'm still not completely sold on Paul Wesley as lead paramour vamp. He annoyed me on every show he's been on (especially Everwood) but he's growing acceptable to me here. Which is a start. At least he's usually next to Nina, Ian or Chris William Martin (another Canadian on the cast, Felicity) so it all balances out.

  • Cougar Town (New Series Premiered Sep. 23 2009) ABC/CITY Wednesdays 9:30pm - *** - Pilot - Ep. 101

  • Okay, there are dirty jokes, double entendres and some are real zingers, while others fall flat, but you gotta give Courtney Cox credit for not resting on her Friends money (seriously, does she really ever have to work ever again?) and going for the gusto here as the central cougar in question (in a town with a football team called The Cougars). I like her rapport with Busy Phillips (Dawson's Creek) and I LOVE her rapport with her son Dan Byrd (Aliens in America).

Dan Byrd is simply AWESOME! And he holds things together on this show and grounds it as it's about to fly off the deep (throat) end. The show even makes Josh Hopkins funny (and hot), Brian Van Holt (usually hot) funny and a bit sad and slimy, and Ian Gomez (not hot but very funny, though will forever be Javier on Felicity to me) gets to be back on TV again (not that he, married to My Big Fat Greek Wedding riches ever needs to work again either)!

Christa Miller (Scrubs), married to creator Bill Lawrence (Scrubs) plays the same character she played on Scrubs. I wonder how she got the job? Surely it's not for her face, which has totally been botched up by some plastic surgery. Seriously, she's become so grating and while once it was funny, it's become so annoying that she really puts a damper into this show.

  • Eastwick (New Series Premiered Sep. 23 2009) ABC/ATV Wednesdays 10pm - *** - Pilot - Ep. 101

  • Okay, I'm still not sure I buy good'ol Canadian (and former fake Due South Mountie) Paul Gross as the Devil but I enjoyed this show far more than I thought I was going to as well.

Okay, so it's really Desperate Ghost Whispering Charmed Cashmere Lipstick wearing Housewives and using Stars Hollow seems sacrileges (even though I know that set has been around forever), but while I have a feeling this will all wear thin very fast, I actually enjoyed the pilot.

Big plusses go to two actresses I never feel I like but do when I actually see them in shows. Lindsay Price grew on me in Lipstick Jungle and Rebecca Romijn proved herself by playing a transgendered fashion mogul on Ugly Betty and so far the likability is carrying through here.

Add in Sara Rue (Popular, Less Than Perfect and hottie Johann Urb, narration by Veronica Cartwright, and gratuitous shots of Matt Dallas (Kyle XY) with his shirt off and belly button back on, and I'm kinda sold for another few weeks at least.

  • The Beautiful Life (New Series Premiered Sep. 16 2009, Cancelled Sep. 25th 2009) TheCW/ATV Wednesdays 9pm

  • Well so much for that! I had a feeling that by the time I got this post out, this show might not even exist, but I'm still surprised at how fast it all happened. Especially considering the show is far better than Melrose Place which got a far bigger push from the network (and hence probably why it got far bigger ratings. I barely heard about TBL). So TBL joins yet another notch in The CW's self-destructive fulfillment. Too bad, cause I kinda enjoyed this gratuitous show about beautiful people and I liked leads Sara Paxton and Ben Hollingsworth (who incidentally was the gay hustler in Degrassi:TNG who almost got Marco a new way to earn money!).

Okay, so Mischa Barton was majorly annoying, as was Jaime Murray's blackmailing cougar who uses Chad Corbin Bleu for her own sexual pleasure, but whatever, it was frothy and showed a lot of skin and had more interesting and plausible storylines compared to MP.

  • Mercy (New Series Premiered Sep. 23 2009) NBC/CITY Wednesdays 8pm ** - Can We Get That Drink Now - Ep. 101

  • Trauma (New Series Premiered Sept. 28 2009) NBC/CITY Mondays 9pm *1/2 - Pilot - Ep. 101

  • Mercy/Trauma are both sort of ripoffs of Grey's Anatomy/ER and feel like sad knock offs. Mildly entertaining, and I applaud sticking in non-white leads in both shows, but while I didn't hate either show, I'm not sure I'm really going to follow all season long. Despite the great creatives behind Trauma (who also are behind Friday Night Lights) and the great ensemble cast on Mercy who include Margo Martindale (Paris, Je T'aime) and Guillermo Díaz (Weeds).

James Tupper (Men In Trees) is a plus on Mercy and I like Michelle Trachtenberg here, but I love her more on Gossip Girl and feel like Merritt Wever has already done the innocent naive nurse far better on Nurse Jackie now.

There's not really characters on Trauma as there are explosions with people who are in the vicinity. It's invigorating to see the selfish dimwit who MUST txt on the phone while speeding on the highway, then causing a massive pileup and getting hurt, but really, I don't need to see that ALL that much.

  • Melrose Place (New Series Premiered Sep. 8 2009) TheCW Tuesdays 9pm (Global Wednesday 10pm) - *1/2 - Pilot, Nightingale, Grand - Eps. 101-103

  • Thank goodness for Katie Cassidy (Supernatural), Colin Egglesfield and Michael Rady or else this would have been long gone from my list.

What a bore. I know they're trying to evoke soapy darkness but all it is so far is poorly lighted overly glossy wallpaper. It may look nice but it doesn't do anything.

I want to like Canadians Shaun Sipos and Jessica Lucas (who was far better guesting on 90210 last year) but they're not exactly given much to work with. And don't even get me started with Ashlee Simpson-Wentz. Wench more like it.

Michael Rady still exudes his nice guy charms (The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, Greek) which sort of doesn't fit into the darkness they're trying to evoke here. Only Colin and Katie have that pretty with a hint of darkness down pat.

Let's hope Heather Locklear's Amanda can re-start this series up like she did the first time around.

  • Accidentally On Purpose (New Series Premiered Sep. 21 2009) CBS/CITY Mondays 8:30pm - *1/2 - Pilot, Memento - Eps. 101-102

  • Ashley Jensen left Ugly Betty for this? Okay, so she was getting like 3 lines every 5 episodes but those were at least 3 very funny lines. Better than the many lines she's getting here, none of which are funny.

And yet, I did laugh out loud 3 times in 2 episodes here. Accidentally I think. It's gotta be a relative thing. On the other hand, I do like me some shirtless Jon Foster. When did that boy get muscles and abs? Wowza!

And I don't actually hate Jenna Elfman, but she's not exactly grabbing me here either. Though watching Grant Show do comedy (not since Melrose Place days is kinda fun.

  • N.C.I.S. Los Angeles (New Series Premieres Sept. 22 2009) CBS Tuesdays 9pm - * - Identity - Ep. 101

  • Well, it has Linda Hunt, Peter Cambor (so funny from Notes from the Underbelly), and Chris O'Donnell (I love me some whitebread) but it's N.C.I.S spinoff. This is just not my thing. Granted, O'Donnell paired with LL Cool J is actually a nice buddy cop thing (and really, if you think about it, O'Donnell and LL Cool J? The 90's wouldn't believe it) but still, it's N.C.I.S.. I'll pass.

  • The Forgotten (New Series Premiered Sept. 22 2009) ABC 10pm

  • I forgot to watch.

I also skipped Brothers and The Cleveland Show. Two black shows. I didn't skip it cause they were black shows, but just cause they were Fox weekend shows.

Fallworthy 2009 - A Breakdown Of the New Fall Shows

Let's face it, most of the new shows this fall don't really look that great, and the main one that does, already had it's "preview".

And this year, I've only caught two pilots, but luckily, from the buzz around, those are apparently the two best shows.

Obviously, WE ARE ALL ALREADY WATCHING GLEE, RIGHT?

    RIGHT?

The other best show is, of COURSE, in the EXACT SAME TIME SLOT, but you can DVR Modern Family on ABC (also on Wednesdays at 9pm) and watch it after Glee. (To check out the pilot, use the password "tiaz909y" here).

But alas, maybe some of the other shows will turn out better than expected. Hey, this time last year, I wouldn't have thought twice about The Mentalist but look how that turned out!?

Anyways, here's my breakdown of all the new fall shows on the main networks sorted by day of the week:

    SUNDAYS

A pretty stable night with very little that has changed with only two new shows on the main networks and The CW completely bowing out.

Returning Shows I Will Watch: Amazing Race, Desperate Housewives, Brothers & Sisters
Returning Shows on Cable I Will Figure Out A Way To Watch: (because I don't get them on my cable in Canada): Mad Men
That Show Is Still On?: America's Funniest Home Videos

  • Three Rivers (New Series Premieres Oct. 4 2009) CBS Sundays 9pm

  • Why People Would Watch: Those Moonlight fans are crazy loyal and Alex O'Loughlin stars in this, without the broody vampire stuff. Now people not that into vampire shows can watch something he's in. Plus he's in the next Jennifer Lopez romantic comedy and looks cute in it.

Why People Wouldn't Watch: It's not a vampire show starring Alex O'Loughlin. It looks kinda lame.

Why I Would Watch: I never got the Alex O'Loughlin love... but he's growing on me, probably because there's no vampire broodiness. Plus Broadway's Christopher J. Hanke (who I saw in The Full Monty National Tour) is in this, along with Julia Ormond and Alfre Woodard, two actors I like.

Why I Wouldn't Watch: It's about organ donation and thus is another medical drama that I don't really need. Then again, I said that about Nurse Jackie and look how that turned out? Unfortunately, this looks more earnest and sappy then snappy and smart like NJ. Plus it's on against Desperate Housewives and I'm not really looking to add new shows to my Sunday lineup.

What It Hopes To Be: St. Elsewhere meets Providence

What It Hopes Not To Be: Forgotten.

Worthy?: I'll check it out, just cause of the cast, and it looks it could be mildly entertaining when there's nothing else to watch, but nothing to make it required viewing.

  • The Cleveland Show (New Series Premieres Sep. 27 2009) FOX Sundays 8:30pm

  • Why People Would Watch: It's Seth MacFarlane's new show and looks like the Black version of Family Guy

Why People Wouldn't Watch: If they aren't into Family Guy.

Why I Would Watch: Jason Sudeikis and Arianna Huffington have re-occuring roles. Sanaa Lathan is a regular voice.

Why I Wouldn't Watch: I'm not into Family Guy.

What It Hopes To Be: The Black Family Guy.

What It Hopes Not To Be: The Black American Dad.

Worthy?: I don't mind animated comedies, in theory, but I'm just not into Seth MacFarlane stuff.

    MONDAYS

Start of the week but it looks quite spotty. With lots of show I'm mediocre on (House, Lie to Me, Castle, Dancing with the Stars). And again, only two new shows for the night (I'm not counting The Jay Leno Show. That doesn't exist in my world)

Returning Shows I Will Watch: How I Met Your Mother, Gossip Girl, The Big Bang Thoery
Returning Shows on Cable I Will Figure Out A Way To Watch (because I don't get them on my cable in Canada): Greek and the remaining episodes of The Secret Life of the American Teenager
That Show Is Still On?: One Tree Hill

  • Accidentally On Purpose (New Series Premieres Sep. 21 2009) CBS/CITY Mondays 8:30pm

  • Why People Would Watch: Jenna Elfman headlines this new comedy. Grant Show is in a comedy (well trained from all those years on Melrose Place). It's in the timeslot between How I Met Your Mother and Two and a Half Men

Why People Wouldn't Watch: Jenna Elfman headlines this new comedy. She seems really polarizing.

Why I Would Watch:: Jon Foster (life as we know it) and Ashley Jensen (Extras, Ugly Betty) co-star and I love them.

Why I Wouldn't Watch: It's more like Two and A Half Men than HIMYM

What It Hopes To Be: Dharma and Greg's Younger Brother

What It Hopes Not To Be: Courting Alex

Worthy?: I actually liked Courting Alex (Eflman's last failed show) and considering I'm pretty much ignoring timeslot competitors DWTS, Heroes, House, this will fit well after HIMYM until 9pm for now.

  • Trauma (New Series Premieres Sept. 28 2009) NBC Mondays 9pm

  • Why People Would Watch: It's a "high octane" show with what looks like lots of explosions and stuff. Did I mention it was a MEDICAL show?

Why People Wouldn't Watch: It looks really dumb.

Why I Would Watch: It's Peter Berg's new show, and since his last one was Friday Night Lights, I'm required to give this a chance. He made a football show that made me CARE, so maybe this might be better than it looks. Lots of FNL people behind this, plus, FNL's Kevin Rankin is a regular cast member here.

Why I Wouldn't Watch: The previews look REALLY dumb.

What It Hopes To Be: ER on steroids

What It Hopes Not To Be: Speed set in hospital

Worthy?: I'm still really dubious about it and would have totally ignored it if it weren't for all the Friday Night Lights connections. So I'll definitely check it out for now, if only for FNL's sake, but I'm still not convinced.

    TUESDAYS

Well, Tuesdays in the states looks dismal until So You Think You Can Dance is added to the lineup and they go into the Top 20 Performances on Oct. 27th. In Canada, we actually have Season 2 of So You Think You Can Dance Canada performance episodes until Oct. 20th (just in time to pass the baton back to the American counterpart) to keep me busy on Tuesdays.

Returning Shows I Will Watch: So You Think You Can Dance
Returning Shows I Might Keep Up With: 90210 solely because of Matt Lanter, Being Erica mainly because of Tyron Leitso
That Show Is Still On?: N.C.I.S.

  • Shark Tank (New Series Already Premiered, moves to Tuesdays Sep. 8th 2009) ABC Tuesdays 8pm

  • Why People Would Watch: The show is smarter than it sounds and looks. And in this economically troubled times, what could be more fascinating than people attempting to start new businesses? A reality show about business by Mark Burnett that DOESN'T involve Donald Trump.

Why People Wouldn't Watch: It's a reality show. A reality show about business. A reality show about business that almost has the auditions format of Idol

Why I Would Watch: It's based on Dragons Den which has versions all over the world. The Canadian version on CBC is actually really fascinating and interesting to watch, and a LOT smarter and classier than you would think this show would be. I actually learned a lot about creating a business and how it works from the Canadian investors comments. Plus, the US version poached 2 of the Canadian "Dragons" investors (Robert Herjavec and Kevin O'Leary) and turned them into Sharks (although I liked the other 2 guys and the woman the best on the Canadian version, Kevin and Robert are the more like "Simon").

Why I Wouldn't Watch: It's against So You Think You Can Dance, the mother of all reality shows.

What It Hopes To Be: Dragons Den

What It Hopes Not To Be: The Apprentice

Worthy?: Not required viewing but based on the Canadian version, I actually want to watch this, and it's quite entertaining to watch. I wouldn't stay home for this but if I'm home, I'd watch.

  • V (New Series Premieres Nov. 3 2009) ABC 8pm

  • Why People Would Watch: It's based on the original mini-series V which everyone except me seems to remember and love. It's a sci-fi show on ABC with a very pretty cast.

Why People Wouldn't Watch: It's a sci-fi show on ABC, will they keep it on long enough to actually wrap up stories? Will people have patience on top of Lost?

Why I Would Watch: Scott Wolf. Elizabeth Mitchell (Juliet on Lost). Canadian Laura Vandervoort (Instant Star, Smallville) and Monica Baccarin (Firefly), plus re-occuring guest role for Alan Tudyk (Firefly)?! Awesome!

Why I Wouldn't Watch: Seems super creepy. And if they don't know where this is going, I'm out.

What It Hopes To Be: V The Series, Lost with Aliens

What It Hopes Not To Be: The ratings for Invasion, Jericho, Threshold

    Worthy?: Scott Wolf? I'm in!

  • Melrose Place (New Series Premieres Sep. 8 2009) TheCW Tuesdays 9pm

  • Why People Would Watch: It's Melrose Place bitch! Before Gossip Girl, before The OC, there was Melrose Place. Where pretty and vapid people "lived" and slept around and connived and slept around. Plus, the hope that Heather Locklear will return as AMANDA as a ratings saviour.

Why People Wouldn't Watch: Fear of STD's.

Why I Would Watch: Michael Rady. Canadians Jessica Lucas and Shaun Sipos. Colin Egglesfield cause he's pretty.

Why I Wouldn't Watch: Ashlee Simpson (oh barf). The lame premise/mystery/twist. Of ALL the former residences, all they could get was Thomas Calabro as Michael Mancini and Laura Leighton as a no-longer-dead-but-were-going-to-kill-her-again Sydney? I know Doug Savant and Marcia Cross won't be returning since they're on a legit hit, and Grant Show is trying a legit sitcom, and Courtney Thorne Smith is just basking in the money from Ally McBeal and According to Jim. Even Josie Bisett has a pretty good gig going on The Secret Life of the American Teenager, but what about Andrew Shue? I know he's moved on and helping poor soccer kids and actually living a real (and respectable sounding) life but ANDREW SHUE! So yummy!

What It Hopes To Be: Melrose Place with Gossip Girl sensibilities

What It Hopes Not To Be: 90210

Worthy?: Because I'm shallow, I'll try a few episodes, but if it can't get the ground running like 90210, both of them are being evicted from my schedule.

  • N.C.I.S. Los Angeles (New Series Premieres Sept. 22 2009) CBS Tuesdays 9pm

  • Why People Would Watch: It's an N.C.I.S. spinoff. It stars Chris O'Donnell and LL Cool J

Why People Wouldn't Watch: It's an N.C.I.S. spinoff.

Why I Would Watch: Chris O'Donnell, LL Cool J, Linda Hunt and Peter Cambor (so underrated on Notes From the Underbelly)

Why I Wouldn't Watch: It's an N.C.I.S. spinoff, and based on the one episode of the original that I watched in a hotel because it was the only English show on at the time, I realized I should have watched the other shows in foreign languages. I might have actually understood the other shows more.

What It Hopes To Be: N.C.I.S. or CSI: Miami

What It Hopes Not To Be: Actually good.

Worthy?: As much as I love O'Donnell, Cool J, Hunt and Cambor, uh, NO.

  • The Good Wife (New Series Premieres Sept. 22 2009) CBS Tuesdays 10pm

  • Why People Would Watch: Julianna Margulies with Chris Noth. Hathaway meets Big! Noth lands in a sex scandal so the good wife Marguillies must start anew, balancing being a mother and going back to work as an attorney.

Why People Wouldn't Watch: Sounds really dour and dowdy.

Why I Would Watch: The ensemble cast is GREAT! Matt Czuchry (Gilmore Girls), Christine Byranski, Graham Phillips (13: The Musical), Josh Charles.

Why I Wouldn't Watch: It sounds like it could be really boring.

What It Hopes To Be: Desperate Housewife The Drama

What It Hopes Not To Be: Cane

Worthy?: I had no interest in this until I heard about the ensemble cast. Now for Czuchry, Byranski, Phillips and Charles alone, I'm intrigued.

  • The Forgotten (New Series Premieres Sept. 22 2009) ABC 10pm

  • Why People Would Watch: It's Christian Slater doing a Jerry Bruckheimer show.

Why People Wouldn't Watch: It's Christian Slater doing a Jerry Bruckheimer show.

Why I Would Watch: It's on ABC.

Why I Wouldn't Watch: Nothing about this show is even remotely making me interested, and sadly, the show is following its name a bit too closely.

What It Hopes To Be: Without a Trace

What It Hopes Not To Be: Whatever show Slater was on last year, the name which I've already forgotten... doh!

Worthy?: What show is this again?

    WEDNESDAYS

Only CBS has their lineup intact but here's the night where the two best shows (or the word on the street says), Glee and Modern Family compete against each other in the same timeslot. Of course.

Returning Shows I Will Watch: The New Adventures of Old Christine, Gary Unmarried, So You Think You Can Dance
Returning Shows on Cable I Will Figure Out A Way To Watch (because I don't get them on my cable in Canada): Top Chef, Friday Night Lights
That Show Is Still On?: CSI: New York

  • Mercy (New Series Premieres Sep. 23 2009) NBC Wednesdays 8pm

  • Why People Would Watch: A hospital show, but from the nurses perspective. Extremely loyal Buffy fans who will follow Michelle Trachtenberg.

Why People Wouldn't Watch: Another hospital show.

Why I Would Watch: Guillermo Diaz (Weeds) and James Tupper (Men In Trees) are in the cast.

Why I Wouldn't Watch: Another hospital show.

What It Hopes To Be: ER without the doctors, Grey's Anatomy from a different perspective

What It Hopes Not To Be: Lipstick Jungle but about nurses.

Worthy?: I really doubt it. Diaz, Tupper and Trachtenberg might pull me in enough to check it out but against New Christine and SYTYCD, it probably won't survive the tug of war.

  • Hank (New Series Premieres Sep. 30 2009) ABC Wednesdays 8pm

  • Why People Would Watch: Kelsey Grammar's new show.

Why People Wouldn't Watch: Kelsey Grammar's new show which is apparently REALLY bad.

Why I Would Watch: Since I was one of the few people that actually enjoyed Back To You, I'd be game for yet another Kelsey Grammar show. While I don't think he's all that and sometimes overrated/overpaid, I can still watch Frasier reruns anytime so that's got to mean something. Plus James Burrows is directing again.

Why I Wouldn't Watch: Apparently it's really bad.

What It Hopes To Be: According to Frasier

What It Hopes Not To Be: According to Jim

Worthy?: Against New Christine and SYTYCD? I doubt it.

  • The Middle (New Series Premieres Sep. 30 2009) ABC Wednesdays 8:30pm

  • Why People Would Watch: Patricia Heaton plays a harried mom.

Why People Wouldn't Watch: Patricia Heaton plays a harried mom without Raymond.

Why I Would Watch: Neil Flynn (Scrubs) is the father. He might actually even get a character name! Plus as noted before, I actually liked Back To You and Patricia Heaton was about the only thing I could stand about Everybody Loves Raymond.

Why I Wouldn't Watch: It's another suburban family comedy. Without anything that looks new.

What It Hopes To Be: Everybody Loves Patricia

What It Hopes Not To Be: Surviving Suburbia

Worthy?: It's against the second half hour of SYTYCD results show, where we actually find out the results. NO. Plus I already have Gary Unmarried and I think I can only have one mediocre comedy-that-I-like in my lineup.

  • Glee (Series Premieres Sept. 9) FOX/Global Wednesdays 9pm *****

  • Why People Would Watch: Because it's the best new show of the fall season. Because it's funny, dark, twisted, complex and simple. Because it delves into High School with a new twist. Because it has musical numbers, an awesome cast, and great guest stars.

Why People Wouldn't Watch: Because they are stupid poo pooheads. Because they'll automatically dismiss this show for being a "high school" show or a "musical" without being smart enough to realize how much more it really is.

Why I Would Watch: Duh, because it's AWESOME!

Why I Wouldn't Watch: Because someone kidnapped and blinded me and threw me in a windowless dungeon.

What It Hopes To Be: High School Musical with a dark twisted mind.

What It Hopes Not To Be: Cop Rock, Viva Laughlin

Worthy?: My straight guy friends who checked out the pilot (and who usually don't like musicals) LOVED IT. There might actually be some hope yet! Of COURSE this is worthy! Do NOT even CALL me between Wednesdays at 9-10pm from now on.

  • The Beautiful Life (New Series Premieres Sep. 16 2009) TheCW Wednesdays 9pm

  • Why People Would Watch: Pretty people looking beautiful.

    Why People Wouldn't Watch: Jealousy

Why I Would Watch: Pretty people looking beautiful and I'm totally shallow (if you haven't been able to figure out so far)

Why I Wouldn't Watch: Mischa Barton. Bitch.

What It Hopes To Be: Make Me America's Next Top Supermodel: The Dramatization

What It Hopes Not To Be: Models Inc.

Worthy?: Of all the new CW shows, this one intrigues me the most, probably because it seems to know exactly what it is and what it's going for, and nothing more, and nothing less. Oh, and duh, pretty people!

  • Modern Family (New Series Premieres Sept. 23 2009) ABC/CITY Wednesdays 9pm ****1/2

  • Why People Would Watch: Because it's a complex sitcom that is emotionally deep, hilariously observant and just twisted enough to take the typical "suburban sitcom" into a new direction.

Why People Wouldn't Watch: It's too complex and the humour is too dry.

Why I Would Watch: Faves Ed O'Neil (Married With Children, Julie Bowen (Ed, Boston Legal, Lost), Jesse Tyler Ferguson (The Class), Sofia Vergara (Men In Trees, Dirty Sexy Money) and Ty Burrell (Back To You) are amongst the cast in a VERY FUNNY and VERY TOUCHING and VERY ENTHRALLING sitcom.

Why I Wouldn't Watch: Glee will be on at the same time.

What It Hopes To Be: Arrested Development but with slightly more normal families.

What It Hopes Not To Be: Sons & Daughters (even though I REALLY liked that show)

Worthy?: Most definitely YES. The worst part of this show is that it's scheduled against Glee, the hottest buzz show this year. Hopefully ABC will move it or like Better Off Ted, give the worthy shows a chance and be patient with it.

  • Cougar Town (New Series Premieres Sep. 23 2009) ABC/CITY Wednesdays 9:30pm

  • Why People Would Watch: Cougars! And the cougar is Courtney Cox!

Why People Wouldn't Watch: They're scared of plastic surgery.

Why I Would Watch: Dan Byrd (Aliens in America) plays Courtney's son. The ensemble cast includes Christa Miller, Josh Hopkins, Brian Van Holt, Busy Phillips and Ian Gomez (Javier!), and it's from Scrubs creator Bill Lawrence

Why I Wouldn't Watch: Word is it's bad.

What It Hopes To Be: Friends fifteen years in the future.

What It Hopes Not To Be: The Cougar: The (Scripted) Comedy

Worthy?: Even though the buzz is bad, I still really want to see this based on pedigree alone.

  • Eastwick (New Series Premieres Sep. 23 2009) ABC Wednesdays 10pm

  • Why People Would Watch: Based on the famous movie/book The Witches Of Eastwick. Rebecca Romijn co-stars.

Why People Wouldn't Watch: It's apparently terrible

Why I Would Watch: The Devil is played by Canadian Paul Gross (Due South, Sling & Arrows) even though he's apparently completely miscast. Sara Rue (Less Than Perfect) co-stars, and Lindsay Price, who I don't think I like but always wins me over, stars. Plus, as a showkiller, I feel bad for Price (Lipstick Jungle, Coupling).

Why I Wouldn't Watch: If it's Lipstick Jungle with a devil.

What It Hopes To Be: Sex and the City with a Big Devil

What It Hopes Not To Be: Lipstick Jungle, Cashmere Mafia with a devils twist

Worthy?: I'm curious about this but I'm not hopeful, and I might have enough saved up from earlier in the night to catch up on.

    THURSDAYS

There are 7 days in a week but apparently the networks like to shove everything on Thursdays don't they?

Returning Shows I Will Watch: Survivor, Bones, The Office, 30 Rock, Fringe, Supernatural, The Mentalist
Returning Shows I Usually Watch but I Might Have To Drop: Private Practice, Grey's Anatomy

  • Flash Forward (New Series Premieres Sep. 24 2009) ABC 8pm

  • Why People Would Watch: It looks like Lost light, with a fun sci-fi twist on a human drama.

Why People Wouldn't Watch: It might be as confusing as Lost

Why I Would Watch: The cast alone, with John Cho (Harold and Kumar), Sonya Walger (Lost), Joseph Fiennes (Shakespeare in Love), Jack Davenport (Coupling UK), Brian O'Byrne and Courtney B. Vance (Law & Order: Criminal Intent) is reason alone. The freaky/fun premise sounds intriguing. And Dominic Monaghan (Lost) guest stars/re-occurs? Nice!

Why I Wouldn't Watch: If it doesn't know where it's going, or wastes its talented cast, I'm out.

What It Hopes To Be: Lost light.

What It Hopes Not To Be: Heroes

Worthy?: Next to Glee and Modern Family, this is the show I'm looking most (flash) forward to.

  • The Vampire Diaries (New Series Premieres Sep. 10 2009) The CW/CTV 9pm (moves to 7pm on CTV in Oct.)

  • Why People Would Watch: It's about teenage vampires.

Why People Wouldn't Watch: It's about teenage vampires.

Why I Would Watch: Degrassi Nina Dobrev joins Shenae on The CW. Let's hope this one turns out better. Plus, Lost alum Ian Somerhalder AND Steven R. McQueen (Everwood). Love those two.

Why I Wouldn't Watch: Paul Wesley who I have hated on every show he's been on. And here he plays the protagonist that were supposed to sympathize with? I don't think so.

What It Hopes To Be: Twilight The TV show

What It Hopes Not To Be: 90210 with vampires.

Worthy?: If it weren't for Paul Wesley, I'd be all in, but I HATE HIM so I'm not sure yet. The commercials also like a little cornball, but since CTV will move it to 7pm where it won't conflict with anything, why not?

  • Community (New Series Premieres Sep. 17 2009) NBC/CITY 8:30pm

  • Why People Would Watch: A quirky comedy with the very funny and strangely good looking Joel McHale as the lead.

Why People Wouldn't Watch: It's too quirky? It's not actually funny? Chevy Chase?

Why I Would Watch: Joel McHale and the fact that I'm assuming this comedy has his sense of humour. Oh, and John Oliver from The Daily Show is in it too!

Why I Wouldn't Watch: If Chevy Chase becomes the focus.

What It Hopes To Be: Arrested Development/ The Office at a community college.

What It Hopes Not To Be: Parks & Recreation

Worthy?: Let's hope it's more The Office but the trailer looks pretty funny and again, Joel McHale!

    FRIDAYS

When did Fridays actually get busy?

Returning Shows I Will Watch: Ugly Betty, Southland, Dollhouse
That Show Is Still On?: 'Til Death

  • Brothers (New Series Premieres Sep. 25 2009) FOX 8pm

  • Why People Would Watch: NFL fans who want a laugh, Black people looking to fill the void left by The CW dumping the comedies that will re-run in the future on BET.

Why People Wouldn't Watch: They're White.

Why I Would Watch: Daryl "Chill" Mitchell (Ed) and CCH Pounder (The Shield) star. Especially to see CCH Pounder in a comedy.

Why I Wouldn't Watch: I would forget that it's on.

What It Hopes To Be: The Game or Girlfriends for boys.

What It Hopes Not To Be: A Black Coach

Worthy?: Not to sound racist but probably not. Though seeing CCH Pounder in something light sounds super intriguing.

    SATURDAYS

Time to catch up on anything you missed! Or go out and have a life! Or watch Glee again (cause you know you'll want to, ya Gloser!).

You Had Me At Vartanho - HawthoRNe - Pilot Review

HawthoRNe premieres tonight (Tuesday, June 16) at 9pm on TNT. Yes. the show is called HawthoRNe. That's how the website even writes it. How clever eh? It's about NURSES so they emphasize the RN in the title! Groan.

And as if there weren't enough medical shows already, here we need a new one to replace ER and to join Grey's Anatomy, Private Practice, Scrubs, House, Royal Pains.

Oh, but this one is specifically about NURSES. Cause it's time for them to STRIKE BACK! Between Nurse Jackie and this fall's Mercy, the RN's are taking over the tube.

Hawthorne also stars Jada Pinkett Smith in the title role as the hospital's chief nurse, a feisty no-nonsense single mother as no black woman can be (seriously, they might as well have given her the name Chaneequa instead of Christina). Granted, she's single because she's widowed and the pilot picks up exactly one year after her husband's death (who is presumed to be white since the mother-in-law seems to be a white socialite on the hostpial's board).

But whatever, this is Jada Pinkett Smith's foray into television and while the show is more of a throwback to the simpler plain drama days (it's not as melodramatic as Grey's which now is a good thing, nor is it as realistically brutal as ER, and instead, lands itself somewhere in the middle as a comforting middle of the road plain toast drama), Smith has surrounded herself with a great ensemble cast that suckered me in.

First off, I'm not a huge Jada Pinkett Smith fan. She's the black actress white people try to like but don't quite, but tolerate because she's married to Will Smith, a black actor white people love, at least when he sticks to big blockbuster action comedies. (For black actresses white people love, see Regina Taylor, Gabrielle Union, or Phylicia Rashad). Still, by the end of the pilot, I wasn't annoyed and actually quite liked Smith as Christina Hawthorne, a nurse with integrity fighting the good fight. (There's no darkness a la Edie Falco here, Smith's nurse is the unsung hero here that you can practically hear the angelic choir).

Michael Vartan (Alias) plays the chief doctor that oversees Hawthorne.

    You had me at Vartanho!

Now, casting Michael Vartan and Jada Pinkett Smith together in one show seems intriguing, basically because I see them as two complete opposites. He's kinda the whitest guy who still comes off intelligent and sophisticated and not a redneck, while Jada Pinkett Smith, well, is a sassy no-nonsense black woman. So their scenes together are kinda neat.

Add in a couple of Canadians I love that deserve better careers and I'm actually being sold on this show that is entertaining, if a little stale.

The beautiful Suleka Mathew (Men In Trees) and the terrific (if obscure) David Julian Hirsh (Naked Josh) play fellow nurses, while Vanessa Lengies (American Dreams, yet another alum of Popular Mechanic for Kids that has already spawned Jay Baruchel, Tyler Kyte and Elisha Cuthbert) is the newbie nurse under their wings.

Now, Christina Moore plays the pretty blonde nurse who goes to great lengths to make her patients feel better... like a LOT better but it currently plays as one note and the character already bores me, as does David Julian Hirsh's Ray Stein's crush on her.

Suleka Mathew's Bobbie character comes with an added twist (which I won't reveal) but as always, Mathew plays it with such a straight and direct gracefulness that I'm thankful she seems to be Hawthorne's confident because I really want more of Bobbie (along with her personal life that gets a jolt in the pilot already with Kyle, a medic who pursues her (played by an actor I can't quite figure out right now but who is a hottie!)).

Also, bonus points for casting character actress Jillian Armenante as nurse Cheryl Brooks (even though she's not in the main cast but deserves to be).

At this point, I'm giving HawthoRNe ***1/2 (3.5 stars out of 5) mainly for its ensemble cast of actors who have always deserved bigger careers.

(Seriously if you think back to Alias days, who would have though Will Tippin's Bradley Cooper would have a bigger career than Michael Vartan. Not that Cooper doesn't deserve to, but who would have thought Will Tippin would prevail in the end?!)

    The Cast of HawthoRNe:

Jada Pinkett Smith as Christina Hawthorne:

Michael Vartan as Dr. Tom Wakefield:

    Suleka Mathew as Bobbie Jackson:

    Hannah Hudson as Camille Hawthorne:

David Julian Hirsh as Ray Stein:

    Christina Moore as Candy Sullivan:
