I got a full dose of dancing tonight! Top 20 Performances on SYTYCD and opening night for The National Ballet of Canada's latest mixed program dedicated to principal dancer Greta Hodgkinson, who is celebrating her 20th year with the company (20 years! And I thought ballet dancers were tossed out once they hit 30). Actually, the program unofficially also celebrated Sonia Rodriguez (who danced a principal role in Mozartiana) and Rebekah Rimsay (who dances in In The Upper Room), who are also celebrating their 20th year with the company! It's lovely to see these ladies still in great dancing shape after all those years (granted, my guess is they're probably not that much older than I am and started young) and that there is a longevity in the dance world that is notorious for a short career span.
The newest program gives us a taste of three celebrated choreographers. First up, is George Balanchine, probably the most renowned choreographers in the ballet world. While I'm probably showing my lack of ballet expertise when I state that Balanchine works are not my favorite, I always have to respect his more traditional ballet routines and that it takes the most talented skills and strengths to perform his work well. Sonia Rodriguez, Keiichi Hirano and Aleksandar Antonijevic dance it wonderfully, but yet again, I found myself admiring the work, more than I loved it.

But the big wow factor is Twyla Tharp's In the Upper Room, which is a superb combination of modern movements, smoke and lighting, and music by Philip Glass. Say what you will about Glass' music, but it seems specially made for the modern ballet, as it works symbiotically with Tharp's choreography as the dance and music seem to enhance one another. With costumes that look either like pajama's or an 80's workout video, the dreamlike state gives the dancers the freedom to let loose, while Tharp's movements are so emotionally thrilling, that I was practically in tears midway through the piece.
While parts were not as tight as it could have been, it was still thrilling to watch Tharp's piece again. In fact, I think I loved it even more this time around (with I believe, some added smoke that added to the theatricality and dreamy state of the piece).
Stephanie Hutchison, Rebekah Rimsay (who I adore. My interview with her, here), Jillian Vanstone, Tina Pereira, Jordana Daumec, Tanya Howard and Sonia Rodriguez were all in great form. It was great to see Rebekah get moments to partner with Piotr Stanczyk again, since they have such a great dancing chemistry together.
Corps de ballet's James Leja looked like a beast and really stood out from the men, while newer dancer Brendan Saye really brought an eloquence to his movements. Saye may not be in perfect form yet, but his tall stature seems so graceful that I think he'll be another dancer to watch for in the future. He just moved beautifully alongside his more experienced colleagues and I'm excited to see more from him.
In fact, there are so many exciting new up and comers in the company that the rotating cast of dancers on each night will give viewers more dancers to keep their eye on, and I'm sort of sad I'm missing out on seeing some of the others who did not dance tonight.

Sadly, on this first night, Mitchell is already injured and forced to sit out. Man, this is starting to happen on the first ep of every season now isn't it?

Nigel and Mary think it was phenomenal, but maybe I'm used to higher quality choreo in the Canadian version, because I thought this was a lite version of Sean's usual stuff. I think the sexiness clouded the judges here.

Poor Nick, getting stuck with the dreaded Quickstep in week one, just because he's partnered with the lone Ballroom dancer this season. On the other hand, maybe dancing with a Quickstep expert helped him, because Nick looked amazingly cool and comfortable doing the Quickstep, in a routine that was surprisingly fun and fresh.

3rd Best Routine of the Night: Travis Wall's Contemporary (Sasha and Alexander)
The Predictions:
Bottom Three Pairs:
Mitchell is automatically in the bottom, so I'm not sure if an additional 3 pairs will dance for their life, or if his partner automatically gets thrown at the bottom as well?
I really have NO idea at this point. Everyone is strong. if they had a weaker week, it's not that they can't dance, it just wasn't their genre. There were no disasters, which is amazing considering it's first week. So I'm pretty much randomly picking couples that I think might just have the least fans.
Caitlynn
Miranda and Robert
Missy and Wadi
Should Go Home: No one yet. I feel everyone deserves a 2nd chance to show their stuff. But if I'm forced to choose, I guess I'd have to say Mitchell and Missy?
Going Home: Mitchell and Missy
This is how I rank all the dancers overall (based on dancing and personality): (To be honest, it is too early to truly rank them and partially based on audition perceptions)
