SYTYCDC3 - 12 Hour Time Delay

So You Think You Can Dance Canada - Season 3 - Top 12 Performance and Results, The Cut from 12 to 10 - Eps. 317-318
Judges: Jean-Marc Généreux, Tré Armstrong, Blake McGrath, Luther Brown, Mary Murphy

Sorry, been on the other side of the world so have only been able to catch up just now, so plowing through all the dances and the non-stop jabber from the judges (5 judges? Seriously? At least it seems to force them all to speak faster. Well, at least for Tré, Blake, Luthor and Mary).

So I'm not going to jabber any more, let's just get to the dances, cause I also go the Top 10 to catch up with (post coming soon).

I also have to say, I know a lot of friends dropping the show because they cannot stand listening to the judges or the hosts, and even I found myself not rushing to watch the latest eps that I missed while I was on vacation, but just watching some of the great dancers or the Top 12 Group Dance reminds me of why I still love this show, despite any flaws.

Janick Arseneau and Denys Drozdyuk
Style: Paso Doble
Choreographed by: Natalli Reznik and Francis Lafreniere
Song: "España Cañí" - Manhattan Pops Orchestra
Grade - Dance: B
Grade - Girl: A-
Grade - Boy: A

Another dance built perfectly for Denys but as one of my faves and one of the strongest dancers here, I'm not going to complain.

Janick held it together and matched Denys' usual intensity and although there were a couple of moments where it seemed a bit overdramatic, she was great, especially up against the perfection of Denys.

Here's the video of Janick and Denys' Paso Doble (via CTV):

Danielle Gardner and Jeff Mortensen
Style: Contemporary
Choreographed by: Stacey Tookey
Song: "The Elephant in the Room" - Richard Walters
Grade - Dance: B-
Grade - Girl: A-
Grade - Boy: B+

Didn't Danielle get Contemporary the week before?

I thought the dancers did a great job but while the judges heaped praise on this, I felt something was still missing. Technically, Jeff and Danielle looked great, but I wasn't feeling their connection nor the whole piece.

It didn't help that Stacey's piece looked like every other Contemporary. Definitely not her best work. Disappointing since we know she can be amazing. (On re-watch, I actually liked it a lot more. Still not THE best piece and still kind of contempogeneric but I didn't hate it as much)

Here's the video of Danielle and Jeff's Contemporary (via CTV):

Charlene Hart and Edgar Gilbert-Reyes
Style: Salsa
Choreographed by: Gustavo Vargas
Song: "La Voz del Caribe" - Eddie Palmieri
Grade - Dance: C
Grade - Girl: B
Grade - Boy: B

I LOVE Charlene. My favorite girl left. And I know a lot of people poo poo Edgar but I think he's been very underrated and very versatile (oh, Luther just called him versatile too!).

But I felt that the sizzle wasn't there between the two of them, and while individually they gave it their best effort, it was kind of a mess together and got worse as it went along, not helped out by Charlene's horrific wardrobe situation (and I'm not even talking about the show that almost fell off). On the other hand, the fact that they continued with the mishaps, only the best dancers would have been able to make it through.

Here's the video of Charlene and Edgar's Salsa (via CTV):

Amanda Cleghorn and Mackenzie Green
Style: African Jazz
Choreographed by: Sean Cheesman
Song: "Drumming Circle" - Professor Trance & the Energizers
Grade - Dance: A-
Grade - Girl: A-
Grade - Boy: A-

A little bit of a connection problem in a few miniscule moments... and that's about all I have for criticism.

Mackenzie. Always amazing. Always puts so much energy into his dancing. Always looks hot.

Amanda has been great and probably hovering near the top of my favorite girls list, and reminded me this week again of why she is there.

Here's the video of Amanda and Mackenzie's African Jazz (via CTV):

Claudia Primeau and Jonathan Arsenault
Style: Hip-Hop
Choreographed by: Sho-Tyme
Song: "The One" - Mary J. Blige feat. Drake
Grade - Dance: A
Grade - Girl: B
Grade - Boy: A-

Considering I already heard about the results, I thought this was going to be a total disaster, but I actually enjoyed it. Great choreo, and while Claudia was obviously weaker, she wasn't bad, especially for a ballroom dancer doing hip-hop.

And I thought Jonathan looked fantastic there with the right swagger. Blake thinks this was his best dance so far!

Here's the video of Claudia and Jonathan's Hip-Hop (via CTV):

Nathalie Heath and Sebastian Mersch
Style: Disco
Choreographed by: Maria Torres
Song: "You Should Be Dancing" - Bee Gees
Grade - Dance: A-
Grade - Girl: A-
Grade - Boy: A-

A very fun routine! Why can't the US get rid of Doriana and bring on the Canadian Disco choreographers?

Nathalie was great, and Sebastian, when he's on, again, reminds me of a mini-Robert Roldan (which is a good thing).

Here's the video of Nathalie and Sebastian's Disco (via CTV):

The Final Roundup:

So the choreographers here really like to have the guys shirtless (or almost) in the dances, don't they? Not complaining. Just mentioning!

Ranking the Couples:
Best of the Night: Amanda and Mackenzie's African Jazz
2nd: Janick and Denys' Paso Doble
3rd: Nathalie and Sebastian's Disco
4th: Claudia and Jonathan's Hip-Hop
5th: Danielle and Jeff's Contemporary
6th - Worst of the Night: Charlene and Edgar's Salsa

Should Go Home: Claudia and... Jeff?

Here's the current unfair ranking of the remaining dancers at this point, based on everything so far (last week's ranking in Parentheses):

1. (tie) Mackenzie (1), Denys (1)
3. Amanda (4)
4. Charlene (1)
5. Sebastian (5)
6. Jonathan (9)
7. Janick (7)
8. Edgar (8)
9. Nathalie (10)
10. Danielle (6)
11. Jeff (11)
12. Claudia (15)

Top 12 Group Dance
Choreographed by: Mia Michaels
Style: Contemporary
Song: "Will I?" - from Rent (Original Broadway Cast Recording)
Grade: A+

My favorite song from the musical I was obsessed with for years (and still one of my faves). Where every dancer looked fantastic. I would point them each out but I realized I wanted to point everyone out. All the dancers looked spectacular and I got shivers just watching that.

The Actual Bottom 3 Couples Are:
Charlene and Edgar
Nathalie and Sebastian
Claudia and Jonathan

Dance for Your Life

Charlene Hart
Style: Contemporary
Song: "In or Out" - Ani DeFranco
Grade: C+
One of my favorite girls but that was a terrible solo considering how talented I know she is. Though apparently she hurt herself before this which explains the lack of dancing.

Nathalie Heath
Style: Contemporary
Song: "Dear Los Angeles" - Sam Behymer
Grade: B+

Claudia Primeau
Style: Jive
Song: "Reet Petite" - Jackie Wilson
Grade: A-
Just as her time is coming to an end, she comes out with her best solo yet.

Edgar Gilbert-Reyes
Style: Hip-Hop
Song: "Boom Boom Pow" - Black Eyed Peas
Grade: A
That was totally hot. And a perfect mix of coolness with a bit of sense of humour, all done perfectly with the song (which I actually hate)

Sebastian Mersch
Style:Contemporary
Song: "Off the Rails" - The Notwist
Grade: A-
He's so odd. I love it. Though Enough with the gross superbendy arms contortion moves.

Jonathan Arsenault
Style: Contemporary
Song: "Cyclone" - Baby Bash
Grade: B+
Love him. Not the best solo but he's totally got the right attitude and I think with some more solo ops, he would totally learn the tricks to a perfect solo.

Alas, in the end, Claudia Primeau is FINALLY gone. Seriously, how did she last THIS LONG? She outlasted many better dancers but finally she's been cut, and about the only dancer I began to dislike. On the flip side, I've always really liked Jonathan Arsenault but between mediocre routines he's been given and not being able to pull out that true star power with his dances, Jonathan's journey has fallen short, and while just by default, he's become one of the weaker male dancers, I still think he's got a lot of potential and a likable personality.
