Christmas Memories - A Whole New World

Remember when the Oscars were epic?

Man, I just found my favorite clip from the Oscars back in 1993, when Lea Salonga and Brad Kane sang "A Whole New World from Aladdin. Our family drove down to Disney World that Christmas and my sister and I re-played "A Whole New World" non-stop for the ENTIRE TWO DAY DRIVE. I'm surprised my parents didn't murder us on the way in Tennessee. This song just makes me think happy Christmas thoughts. It doesn't have anything do with Christmas but it reminds me of the Disney World trips we used to make. Plus, I rewatched this Oscar clip over and over again back then. So glad someone has posted it digitally! (Tho I swear I probably still have it on VHS somewhere):

What happened to Brad Kane anyways? He was so great in the Broadway revival of She Loves Me, had a great voice and was quite handsome. (Apparently he's a producer on Fringe?! And apparently had a second career as Caleb Kane? Wow... so much I'm learning. I'm gonna have to investigate!

I've also been having nostalgic memories of Miss Saigon. The first stage musical I saw live. I saw it again years later and realized it's not the best musical, but I still really want to see it again now. "I Still Believe" with Lea Salonga and Claire Moore (from the Original London cast):

Fringe! Freaks!! Free!!!

It scares me and grosses me out but I love me some Fringe and I'm just catching up with the first season (with my hands covering my eyes (because yes, I'm a chicken and I get scared) while I chuckle at the delicious sarcasm of John Noble and Joshua Jackson) which is now out on DVD and BluRay!

And before next week's Season 2 premiere (on FOX, Thursday, Sept. 17th 2009), I get to give away the First Season BluRay thanks to Warner Brothers BluRays! Check them out here at Warner Blu!

So what do you have to do?

All you have to do is email me with your name, location and answer this question:

Question: Fringe is moving to its new Thursday night timeslot, but one of its competitors is a fellow Warner Blu's brother who just recently released it's own Season on Warner BluRay. What show is it? (For a hint: Click and scroll a bit for the answer)

Email your answer and info to tapeworthycontest at gmail dot com.

Deadline for entries is Thursday, Sep. 17th 2009 at 8:59 E.S.T. (Just before the Season 2 premiere)
If there are more than one correct entries, a random draw will be made from correct entries to determine the winner. Only the winner will be contacted. Contest is only open to US and Canadian residents.

Best New TV Shows According to... Us... So Go Watch Privileged!

We're now into November sweeps so the TV shows should be well into their groove by now. Well, unless you're Lipstick Jungle and My Own Worst Enemy which just got the axe. With new shows The Ex-List and Do Not Disturb already cancelled, and few new shows making huge impact and many returning ones losing out on viewers (Heroes because it sucks now, Pushing Daisies because people suck), it's been strange fall season not being helped by the faltering economy and that whole Palin show thing.

Still, what better time than now to be all judgy judge!?

Scooter asked some of our fellow TV bloggers for their picks for the Best New Shows (since August 2008) and did his top secret math work calculations to come up with the Best New Shows list according to... well... us! Self prophesized TV loving people who decided to write blogs about them because that's how sad our lives are we roll.

Best New TV Shows:

1. Privileged (The CW)
2. Fringe (Fox)
3. True Blood (HBO)
4. The Mentalist (CBS)
5. My Own Worst Enemy (NBC)
6. Raising the Bar (TBS)
7. Busted (MTV)
8. Gavin & Stacey (BBC America)
9. Kath & Kim (NBC)
10. Gary Unmarried (CBS)

Also receiving votes: Life on Mars, 90210, Worst Week, Whatever Martha!, Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Eleventh Hour, Sons of Anarchy, The Ex-List, Rita Rocks

Voters: Dan, Ducky, Matt, Rae, Sandie, Scooter McGavin, Tube Talk Girl, Vance

Here's what I voted for (we were allowed 5 choices)

1. Gavin & Stacey (BBC America)
2. Privileged (The CW)
3. Worst Week (CBS)
4. Fringe (FOX)
5. The Mentalist (CBS)

How did TWO shows on CBS end up on my list? I MUST be getting old or something. And I actually secretly like Gary Unmarried too. Oh sad.

Though I did give Life On Mars as a 6th because I wasn't sure if Gavin & Stacey counted but apparently it does. Though I have a feeling I might have been the only one to vote for it? Seriously people. It's an AMAZING show. When you can find it.

Dan from TiFaux voted:
1. True Blood (HBO)
2. Life on Mars (ABC)
3. My Own Worst Enemy (NBC)
4. Fringe (FOX)
5. Kath and Kim (NBC)

Scooter voted:
1. Busted (MTV)
2. Gary Unmarried (CBS)
3. Raising the Bar (TNT)
4. Star Wars: The Clone Wars (Cartoon Network)
5. The Ex-List (CBS)

Apparently everyone else must have voted for Privileged since Scooter said there was a "slight consensus to Privileged and Fringe to a lesser extent with everything else a little muddled".

So what are you waiting for? Get on the Privileged bandwagon!

Pretty Gross - Bones, Fringe, Supernatural

Bones - Yanks in the U.K., The Man in the Outhouse, The Finger in the Nest, The Perfect Pieces in the Purple Pond - Eps. 401-404
Fringe - The Ghost Network - Ep. 103
Supernatural - Lazarus Rising, Are You There, God? It's Me... Dean Winchester - Ep. 401, 402

Why do I keep watching these shows while I'm eating dinner?

Someone needs to remind me to stop doing that. Last week I was eating a chicken drumstick as Booth's kid finds the remaining bones of a finger, this week I'm having soup when kids find the chopped up pieces of a dead body in a pool of purple liquid.

Ew.

Then again, the show IS called Bones so I should know better.

I don't like horror movies so I'm still not sure why I make myself watch Supernatural and I think I turned away from Fringe a few too many times ALREADY (and what, we're only on the 3rd episode?).

Luckily, the writing is sharp on all three shows and they were smart enough to cast pretty people to offset the gross out factors.

Oh the pretty people. I'm still not totally convinced on Fringe yet. I enjoy it while I'm watching it (when I'm not totally freaked or grossed out at least) but I tend to forget what happened as soon as the show's over. I'm still not totally invested in the overarching plot (well, more like, I'm just too confused ALREADY) and the stand alone stories are X-Files good but as any procedural, I don't need to keep coming back for more. What keeps me coming back for more is Joshua Jackson as Peter Bishop. I mean, I've always loved Pacey but I really do think Jackson has a charisma that loves the TV screen.

Bones is trying to replace Dr. Zack and testing out new hires every week but I like the gimmick so far, because it somehow brings out the intricacies of the team unit and all the relationship entanglements and trust levels to the forefront. It breaks my heart that Angela and Hodgins have broken up, even after finding Angela's hot ex, but it adds for some great tension, along with Sweets who sort of called it all out.

Zack himself shows up this week! And his secret reveal to Sweets gives hope that Eric Millegan will be back! Which is probably why they aren't keeping any one replacement that included Eugene Byrd back as Dr. Clark Edison (above), Michael Badalucco (The Practice) as the oldest grad student, and this weeks very HOT Wendell (Michael Terry). Oh PLEASE can you keep Wendell? He REALLY needs the job to pay off his town for supporting his schooling (and not the Mob as Angela had suspected). The fact that he thought Bones was coming on to him and he freaked about being the boss's bed bitch was HILARIOUS and his naiveness would be a hoot (but a very different naiveness than Zack).

Also, the whole London trip was worth it just for the bobby joke. An expensive bobby joke but it was fun seeing Booth and Bones in London if only to hark back memories of the city that I adore (as long as I don't think about the exorbitant prices).

I missed a few Supernatural episodes from last season and never got caught up, so I'm a bit confused at this point but either way, Dean and Sam are battling evil as normal and Dean was in hell and the show still scares the sh#t out of me.

Yet those faces (particularly Jensen Ackles) keeps suckering me back for more though. It's always the pretty things that can easily tempt us back to evil isn't it?

I could have sworn Sam (Jared Padalecki) cried out Rory and not Bobby in the last episode. Or was I only hoping?

Fear Factor - Fringe - 2008 Fall TV Pilot Preview

Fringe - Premieres Tuesday Sept. 9th at 8pm on FOX/CTV/AChannel. Regular Time Slot on Tuesdays at 9pm on FOX/AChannel.

Okay let's clear this up before the overhype begins. Yes, it's very very good. However it is not perfect and nowhere near the homerun of the pilots Lost or Alias (or even Felicity) were, and yes, it borrows heavily from Alias and The X-Files and yes, I'm already confused and lost after the first episode and at times I was already confused to the point of boredom.

It is however a J.J. Abrams branded show and it has got a great opener, where if you've forgotten the Lost opening already and have gotten back on an airplane, this will remind you NEVER to fly again. The entire show is slickly made and well produced. Even the screen graphics are cool (yes, seen in Panic Room but cool nonetheless) and yet again, Abrams has found another relatively unknown leading lady in Australian Anna Torv who captivates our attention right away.

And if all else fails, Fringe also has the post-Dawson's Creek reappearance of Joshua "Pacey" Jackson, who has an automatic likability that's even sexier now with his try-to-be-grown-up-look-but-still-has-the-baby-faced-cuteness. His acting seems a bit rusty at times, but who cares, it's Pacey in a grown up role!

Without giving too much away, Fringe starts off with a horrific incident on a plane, where FBI investigators Agent Olivia Dunham (Torv), Agent Charlie Francis (Kirk Acevedo, Oz) and Agent John Scott (Mark Valley, Boston Legal, Once & Again) discover some weird science that might be part of the answer, until Agent Scott is infected by whatever horrific toxin that might be the culprit and the agents are forced to locate a mysterious fringe scientist Dr. Walter Bishop (John Noble) to help save Scott. Unfortunately, Dr. Bishop is locked in a psychiatric hospital and Dunham's boss Phillip Broyles (Lance Reddick, The Wire) stops Dunham in her tracks, until she locates the doctors' estranged son Peter Bishop (Jackson) for help, roping him into the case as they try to figure out the antidote and those behind it, which may have to do with a scientific corporation formerly connected to Dr. Bishop, and represented by a mysterious and hard nailed Nina Sharp (Blair Brown, The Days and Nights of Molly Dodd).

As other Abrams show, the supporting cast is a bevy of terrific actors who legitimize the outlandish plot twists that have the Agent Dunham trusting Dr. Walter Bishop and his fringe science methods, all which make son Peter's eyes roll, and thus you have the set up for a reverse The X-Files.

The show is apparently set up with more of a procedural format with a new mystery of the week, and I'm guessing, an overarching conspiracy plotline about the mysterious corporation that is currently assumed to be evil, but while the first half of the pilot felt exciting and fresh, at some point it became slightly plodding and was only saved by the excellent supporting cast (especially Noble, Brown, Reddick and Acevedo) and the likability of Joshua Jackson as the Bishop son. There is some interesting chemistry between Jackson and Torv, though still far from Mulder and Scully, but there is a lot of potential here, but potential can be built upon or wasted away, but at this point, I'm still extremely intrigued and curious about the show and the new show that I'm most excited about.

I'm probably being slightly overgenerous here but at this point, Fringe gets **** (4 stars out of 5). The graphics, cast and Abrams pedigree gains it points, as does shooting the pilot in Toronto (and bonus use of the ROM Crystal) and points taken off for ultimately changing their minds and shooting the rest of the series elsewhere.

Yup, They're One Of Us! - Canada Day Edition

Happy Canada Day!

In honour of our home and nation land, here's my favorite Canadians on TV because you know we are slowly taking over Hollywood (hehe) and that as a rule, there must be one Canadian on each show for it to be good. (Well, okay, the Australians and British are slowly taking over that rule but at least we are keeping it in the commonwealth). Though actually, looking below, seems like ABC is actually employing the most Canadians (as well as the Gays). I knew there was a reason why ABC is now my favorite network!

Sandra Oh as Christina Yang in Grey's Anatomy

Emily Vancamp as Rebecca in Brothers & Sisters

Luke MacFarlane as Scotty in Brothers & Sisters (who also made the Pride Edition! Gay AND Canadian!)

Taylor Kitsch as Tim Riggins in Friday Night Lights

Cobie Smulders as Robin Scherbatsky in How I Met Your Mother

Joshua Jackson as Peter Bishop in the upcoming Fringe

Donald Sutherland as Tripp Darling in Dirty Sexy Money

Evangeline Lilly as Kate Austen in Lost

Sarah Chalke as Dr. Elliot Reid in Scrubs

Victor Garber as Jordan Wethersby in Eli Stone

James Tupper as Jack Slattery in Men In Trees

Some Other Canucks:

Plus Half the cast of Men In Trees including Sarah Strange, Suleka Matthews, Timothy Webber, Ty Olsson, Nicholas Lea and Currie Graham
Natasha Henstridge as Taylor Wethersby in Eli Stone
William Shatner as Denny Crane in Boston Legal
Kiefer Sutherland as Jack Bauer in 24

Fringe & Dollhouse - Let the Cults Begin! - FOX 2008-2009 Video Previews

And the excitement begins. For Dollhouse, the new Joss Whedon/Eliza Dushku show which won't even premiere until the Winter 2009 season, and for Fringe, the new J.J. Abrams show that premieres Tuesday August 26th, both for Fox next season.

I'd do a bigger video preview for all of FOX shows but who are we kidding, all we care about and are giddy in anticipation for are these two shows. Jace thinks Fringe is GREAT already, having seen the pilot.

The trailers are out for the two shows!!! Here's the video clips:
