SYTYCD8 - 20 Again

So You Think You Can Dance - Season 8 - Top 20 - Performances - Redux - Ep. 808
Judges: Nigel Lythgoe, Mary Murphy, Debbie Reynolds

So I guess they've decided to go with celebrities with dance backgrounds as the rotating judge? I wonder if Carrie Fisher is watching this?

So it's the Top 20. AGAIN. Which while making last week's results show a bit anti-climatic, does let us evaluate the dancers again before we have to start making cuts. And with the dancers starting at such an even playing field last week, with no one really dancing horribly, it's nice to be able to see them go through round 2 to help starting to weed out the better dancers from the group.

And good thing too since with a second chance, some dancers solidify their place at the top of the field, while others manage to save themselves from the bottom of my list and right into the top half!

So let's get to it:

Ryan Ramirez and Ricky Jaime
Style: Jazz
Choreographed by: Mandy Moore
Song: "Addicted to Love" - Robert Palmer
Grade - Dance: B
Grade - Girl: B+
Grade - Boy: B-

It's supposed to be a sexy dance, but while I think they looked scantily clad, I didn't feel the chemistry together. Ryan seemed to overpower Ricky, and while Ryan danced the physical moves stunningly, her constant BIG SMILE seemed to defy the attitude of the choreography.

I think Ryan is a GREAT dancer and one of the best here, but she still seems ecstatic that she finally made it onto the Top 20 that she cannot NOT show her gratitude. And because she's so happy, she's powering over Ricky.

The judges loved it. Of course. So maybe I'm just being too picky.

Here's the video of Ryan and Ricky's Jazz:
Coming Soon

Caitlynn Lawson and Mitchell Kelly
Style: Contemporary
Choreographed by: Stacey Tookey
Song: "Turning Tables - Adele
Grade - Dance: A
Grade - Girl: A
Grade - Boy: A

These two sound really immature and a little annoying in the pre-preformance video, which makes it all the more startling to see them dance so maturely in another beautiful Stacey Tookey piece (with the help of Adele). Stunning emotions and movements. I had to rewatch it again right away. And I probably enjoyed it even more the second time.

Caitlynn is deliriously fantastic and heartfelt, while Mitchell shows the same strength and power he showed in last week's solo. They both work really well in the small and controlled movements which show how strong they are, and despite last week's injury that kept Mitchell from dancing, these two feel like they've already figured out how to make their dancing personalities work together well.

Here's the video of Caitlynn and Mitchell's Contemporary:

Missy Morelli and Wadi Jones
Style: Cha Cha
Choreographed by: Jean-Marc Généreux
Song: "Cannibal" - Ke$ha
Grade - Dance: B-
Grade - Boy: C+
Grade - Girl: B

On the one hand, it wasn't a disaster considering we have a street dancer and a jazz dancer. On the other hand on closer inspection, there seemed to be slow moments (though is it due to the choreography?) and Wadi looked really stiff in many places. He managed to look strong and tall but sometimes Wadi looked like he was trying too hard to get that right, and forget to actually Cha Cha the rest of the time. Nigel and Mary pick Wadi apart but praise Missy.

Here's the video of Missy and Wadi's Cha Cha:

Iveta Lukosiute and Nick Young
Style: Bollywood
Choreographed by: Nakul Dev Mahajan
Song: "Baawre" - from Luck by Chance Soundtrack
Grade - Dance: B+
Grade - Boy: A-
Grade - Girl: A-

I love the Iveta called Nick out on his chicken legs. Hilarious! But damn can those legs dance!

I know this might be mean to say but I feel like this is an odd couple. Yes they're both White, but with her being the oldest and he looks like he's 17, there's a bit of a cougarish feel to this pairing. And yet I love these two and they seem to work really well together.

I don't think this was perfectly danced and not everything was in perfect sync yet Nick and Iveta made it look SO fun (though Bollywood pretty much always looks fun) but they definitely got some great tricks and moves in there, and I was still super impressed with both of them.

Here's the video of Iveta and Nick's Bollywood:

Miranda Maleski and Robert Taylor Jr.
Style: Hip-Hop
Choreographed by: Napoleon and Tabitha D'umo
Song: "Break Ya Neck" - Busta Rhymes
Grade - Dance: C
Grade - Boy: A-
Grade - Girl: C-

Seemed like a slightly easier, slower paced Hip-Hop routine and overall seemed forgettable, especially from Nappytabs.

Robert, in his own genre, obviously does great (but is really grating more and more each week), but Miranda looks like she's trying to keep up and she doesn't quite manage to do so. She slips up in a bit of a partnering trick but at least manages to continue right on into the next moves. But it was a little bit of a mess and looked obviously off compared to Robert, who was hitting the beat strongly.

Debbie was mesmerized though and Mary only had positive things to say here. Nigel called Miranda the best contemporary dancer who's done Hip-Hop. Whu? Did I miss something? Was only my TV on a time delay?

Here is the video of Miranda and Robert's Hip-Hop:

Clarice Ordaz and Jess LeProtto
Style: Contemporary
Choreographed by: Stacey Tookey
Song: "Cathedrals" - Jump, Little Children
Grade - Dance: A-
Grade - Boy: B+
Grade - Girl: B+

Another beautiful dance by Stacey Tookey tonight, with some perfect song choices again from our little Canadian Contempo queen! Loved when they split from a moment together into a synchronized turns and dance sequences.

There were a few shaky moments, especially in Jess' lifts, and sometimes I think Clarice's height and big hair seemed to throw Jess off, but as Nigel notes, they danced the solo moments superbly.

Clarice and Jess didn't shake off their immaturity as much, or as well as Caitlynn and Mitchell did, but overall, considering I was getting annoyed with Jess last week, I thought Jess made for quite a handsome Prince, and Clarice felt classier.

Here's the video of Clarice and Jess' Contemporary:
Coming Soon

Jordan Casanova and Tadd Gadduang
Style: Viennese Waltz
Choreographed by: Jean-Marc Généreux
Song: "Fade Into Me" - David Cook
Grade - Dance: A-
Grade - Boy: A-
Grade - Girl: A-

Wow, Tadd looked very soft and graceful, but still holding his upper body. Jordan just seemed to whisp around so smoothly that I just felt like I was watching her dress float around.

Surprisingly beautiful and despite a few shaky moments (mainly in a lift), incredibly strong ballroom that I thought was going to be a disaster. But instead, total wow!

Nigel praises Tadd as probably the best B-Boy dancer to do ballroom, and this time I think he's right.

Here's the video of Jordan and Tadd's Viennese Waltz:

Melanie Moore and Marko Germar
Style: Jazz
Choreographed by: Mandy Moore
Song: "Sing with a Swing (Raf Marchesini Remix)" - DWS
Grade - Dance: B+
Grade - Boy: A-
Grade - Girl: A

Um, how adorable is this pairing? I just want to eat them up!

I didn't think it was the most perfect choreography, as it felt more like a series of Broadway elements pieced together instead of a WHOLE piece, but dang, did Marko and Melanie DANCE... IT!

Melanie could just keep strutting herself right off this show and right onto Broadway right now. And Marko looks so smooth and hot shaking those jazz hands that with the exception of a couple of tiny slip ups, he could dance right along with Melanie to Broadway too!

LOVE watching these two dance!

Here's the video of Melanie and Marko's Jazz:

Sasha Mallory and Alexander Fost
Style: Hip-Hop
Choreographed by: Napoleon and Tabitha D'umo
Song: "Coming Home" - Diddy & Dirty Money feat. Skylar Grey
Grade - Dance: B
Grade - Boy: B
Grade - Girl: A-

Sasha was great. Just great. So great. Loved her, and she had so much to do.

Alexander did a pretty good job, but wasn't quite a match to Sasha, and next to her, his hits didn't seem as hard or on the beat. It didn't help that in his costume, he looks a bit like Chris Evans before he becomes Captain America, so his thin frame doesn't quite work in this role.

The judges loved it though and probably spent more time talking/crying about soldiers coming home than they did the actual dancing.

Here's the video of Sasha and Alexander's Hip-Hop:

Ashley Rich and Chris Koehl
Style: Broadway
Choreographed by: Spencer Liff
Song: "Please, Mr. Jailer" - Rachel Sweet
Grade - Dance: B+
Grade - Boy: A-
Grade - Girl: A

What a fun routine around a set of jail bars. I was half mesmerized just waiting to see how the two dancers were going to twist their way around the prison bars (as shaky as the prop looked).

Ashley just has this glow, so looked absolutely stunning in that red dress, and even more stunning with her strong leg kicks and softness in the stretches.

Chris becomes far more memorable behind bars as he weaves his way around and through the bars.

Here's the video of Ashley and Chris' Broadway:

The Final Roundup:

The Dancers - Pairs Routine:
1st - Best of the Night: Caitlynn and Mitchell
2nd:Melanie and Marko
3rd: Jordan and Tadd
4th: Ashley and Chris
5th: Iveta and Nick
6th: Clarice and Jess
7th: Sacha and Alexander

2nd Best Routine of the Night: Jean-Marc Généreux's Viennese Waltz (Jordan and Tadd)
3rd Best Routine of the Night: Stacey Tookey's Contemporary (Clarice and Jess)

The Predictions:
Bottom Three Pairs:
Sacha and Alexander
Miranda and Robert
Missy and Wadi

Should Go Home: Since 4 dancers must go, I'd say Missy, Wadi, Miranda and Alexander should probably go (even though Robert annoys me the most)
Going Home: Missy, Wadi, Miranda and Alexander.

This is how I rank all the dancers overall (based on dancing and personality): (last week's rankings in parenthesis):
Overall Ranking:
1. Marko (1)
2. Nick (2)
3. Melanie (3)
4. Tadd (9)
5. Iveta (14)
6. Jordan (15)
7. Ashley (4)
8. Caitlynn (18)
9. Mitchell (20)
10. Sasha (5)
11. Chris (6)
12. Jess (8)
13. Clarice (7)
14. Ryan (10)
15. Ricky (11)
16. Robert (13)
17. Missy (19)
18. Alexander (16)
19. Wadi (12)
20. Miranda (17)

Boy, some dancers sure are lucky they had a second chance this week, with a few major shakeups on the list.

SYTYCD8 & SYTYCDC4 - Everybody Dance Now, No Really, EVERYBODY

So You Think You Can Dance - Season 8 - Top 20 - Results - Ep. 807
Judges: Nigel Lythgoe, Mary Murphy, Megan Mullaly

So You Think You Can Dance Canada - Season 4 - Auditions: Toronto - Ep. 401 - Season Premiere
Judges: Jean-Marc Généreux, Tré Armstrong, Luther Brown, Mary Murphy, Rex Harrington
Choreographer: Blake McGrath

Apparently CTV wants to overkill a good thing, now scheduling 5 hours of SYTYCD in one week (with 6 hours next week) between the US and the Canadian edition of the show. I love my Canadian dancers, who I think as a lot, tend to be stronger, but I'm not quite ready to get a double dose just yet, especially when the US Performance rounds only JUST started. But alas, there's a lot of dance to cover:

Top 20 Group Dance
Style: Jazz
Choreographed by: Sonya Tayeh
Song: "XR2" - M.I.A.
Grade - Dance: A

Such a Sonya dance, and so great. Sonya really knows how to use a large group like this and make it look interesting and unified, with right moments of unison and right moments of individualism. And the fact that the Top 20 managed to make it look practically perfect, shows what a strong group this season is starting out with. Still, I have to say, Nick Young was easy to spot out with his tall stature and that he looked comfortable and pretty awesome doing Sonya style, despite coming from a Tap background.

Here's the video of the Top 20 Group Dance:

The Predictions from the Top 20 Performances:
Bottom Three Pairs:
Mitchell is automatically in the bottom.
Caitlynn
Miranda and Robert
Missy and Wadi

Should Go Home: No one yet. I feel everyone deserves a 2nd chance to show their stuff. But if I'm forced to choose, I guess I'd have to say Mitchell and Missy?
Going Home: Mitchell and Missy

The Results:
Bottom 3 Couples:
Jordan and Tadd
Clarice and Jess
Miranda and Robert

Dance for Their Lives:

Mitchell Kelly
Song: "Say" - John Mayer
Grade: A

Holy smokes. I placed Mitchell at the bottom of my Top 20 list mainly because we hadn't seen him dance yet, but WOW, now that we have, I'm in love. I'm amazed. He's like a gazelle as he leaps across that stage. Such control, and precision and careful movements with his body that stays true to the usic. Beautiful. Absolutely beautiful. And may have just zoomed up to the top of my favorite guys.

Jordan Casanova
Song: "Hot Like Wow" - Nadia Oh
Grade: A-

That was like Wow. I liked Jordan but this solo moves her steps ahead in a sultry and sexy, but very controlled solo that I didn't think she had it in her.

Tadd Gadduang
Song: "Jump, Jive An' Wail" - The Brian Setzer Orchestra
Grade: A-

He's such a showman and knows how to entertain with his moves. It's a bunch of tricks in a row but Tadd throws in some old style hamming between that ups his solo, for now.

Clarice Ordaz
Song: "Glam" - Christina Aguilera
Grade: B+

Some beautiful moves but Clarice hasn't quite gotten the dance for your life energy needed to truly make the solos stellar yet.

Jess LeProtto
Song: "Mr. Bojangles" - Robbie Williams
Grade: A

Even if his personality is already starting to grate on you (and it seems like it already bothers many of you), you've got to admit that what he does, he does amazingly. His moves are seriously sick and he definitely knows how to throw that jazz hands attitude into his Broadway.

Miranda Maleski
Song: "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" - Leona Lewis
Grade: A-

Beautiful control in a surprisingly spirited and sensual solo, that with her outfit, truly made Miranda look heavenly.

and Robert Taylor Jr.
Song: "Electric" - Omarion
Grade: B

Knows how to please a crowd though the dancing felt a bit standard without any tricks to wow us.

Here's the video of all of the solos:

Time Filler: A cute guy dances Gopak style. Keri Hilson performs a song that sounds like every other generic dance pop singer, and future judge Lady Gaga shows part of her new video for "The Edge of Glory", which apparently was made back in the 80's when she still had no money yet.

The Results:
The judges make Mitchell and Robert dance again.

Then they make their final decision... to cut .... no one.
Which is both terrific (because with such a strong Top 20, I wanted another week to see more dancing to judge and choose), and kind of anti-climactic, because it seems like a copout. But I guess what I asked for, so I should beware of my wishes, but alas, another week with the Top 20 (but with 4 dancers to be cut in week 2 of performances).

Meanwhile, on the Season 4 Permiere of So You Think You Can Dance Canada, we start the auditions in my city Toronto.

Luckily, unlike the US edition, the Canadian edition has basically excised most of the bad auditions and show only good ones, but here are the ones I particularly liked.

Jordan Clark, 18, Tottenham, ON - Lots of gymnastic tricks but she's incredible smooth and graceful and has a lyrical quality about her. And she's ONLY 18? WHA?! Wow!

Joey Arrigo, 18, Newmarket, ON - Another young 18 year old who has an incredible smooth and lyrical style that smoothes out his tricks. Typical contemporary stuff but beautifully done, with that extra touch that takes it into something special.

Adam Lopapa, 18, Woodbridge, ON - At first glance, I would have put him more on the Jersey Shore instead of a dancer but holy COW, this guy is HOT and he does wonders with Michael Buble's "Feeling Good" in a sultry, sophisticated, WAIT HE'S ONLY 18?, stylish dance. Wow. I'm in love.

Jennifer Abbey, 24, Toornto, ON - Very tight dancing and I only wish she lost her hat and showed more of her big smile and beautiful eyes to make that connection, but her homeless sob story (which now usually annoy me) was actually very touching.

Jordan Davis, 22, Toronto, ON - Very fun b-boy against sound effects music that makes it very entertaining and almost theatrical.

Brenner Smith, 18, Glen Morris, ON - Brother of Everett (Season 2 Top 4 Finalist, the tapper who we adored!). Strange and controlled and patient and subtle with some extremely precise moves. And so cute to boot (like his big brother)! Tre warns him that she almost wanted to stop him at first when nothing was really happening yet, before he busted out the big moves, but that's probably the beauty of his piece.

A.J. Lopresti, 23, Ancaster, ON - He points out his bald spot and his big belly and calls himself "short and stumpy" but between his glowing eyes, big smile, and effervescent tap dancing, I thought he was surprisingly delightful, despite his warnings.

Aleksandra Jurevich, 25, Maple, ON - Tall, thin, blonde, cute girl. I hate her already, and wins me over when she manages to stand up from a kneeling position, springing from her toes. Extremely graceful and cute as a button when she explains her stance is to cover a hole (down there) and not an injury.

Other dancers of note: Daniel Keith Morrison, 23, Toronto, ON (Dojo(?) master? Part standard breaker but sometimes with some super smooth moves which Mary LOVED). Cassandra (danced to "Fever" in a sultry way of course, but I didn't seem to love her as much as the judges did). Rodrigo Basurto, 26, Toronto, ON - (Kind of funky, good looking, I like, don't love yet, but potential). Sarah Vance (had the mouth open during her dance and to be honest, it didn't bother me until they pointed it out, and then I couldn't NOT notice. Though the song she danced to, a guy covering "Bleeding Love" was GREAT. WHO WAS THAT?). Lisa Frias, 25, Toronto, ON (Cute and her song pick was cute but maybe too cute and made it underwhelming overall). Jena Singh, 19, Toronto, ON (Cute young and sexy but dancing a samba alone doesn't quite work as well, but there's future potential). Melissa Mitro 23, Richmond Hill, ON (Goes wild with her dancing and was impressive to points, but I thought went a bit too much, but judges loved her anyways). Yara Vasconcelos, 24, Toronto, ON (I thought the flashiness of her costume and her skinny fine body distracted the judges enough to hide a lot of medium speed hip dancing). Matthew Cuff, Toronto, ON (The Voguer who this year mixed in Hip-Hop/B-Boy style did a fun audition). Andrew Chung, Toronto, ON (Pop'n'locker, who made it to the finals all 3 years before). Kirstie Keanen, 19 (Quirky and cute contemporary dancer who almost made it last year, but doesn't make it through choreo round). Else Mensah, 25, Hamilton, ON (African Jazz dancer who seems fun, and while it isn't always as tight as I would want it to be, she has a nice vibe). Jordon Bartley, 18, Woodbridge, ON (Standard Pop'n'locker with no formal training manages to get a ticket straight to the finals). Vicky Luo, 23, Ajax, ON (The cute Chinese dancer who has made it to the finals before, and seems set up here to finally make the Top 20 this year).

SYTYCD8 & The Ballet - Everybody Dance Now - SYTYCD & Ballet Review

So You Think You Can Dance - Season 8 - Top 20 - Performances - Ep. 806
Judges: Nigel Lythgoe, Mary Murphy, Megan Mullaly

Celebrating Greta - The National Ballet of Canada - Four Seasons Centre - Toronto, ON - **** (averaged grade, out of 5 stars)
Mozartiana - Choreography by Georges Balanchine, Music by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky - ***
Other Dances - Choreography by Jerome Robbins, Music by Frédéric Chopin - ****
In the Upper Room - Choreography by Twyla Tharp, Music by Philip Glass - ****1/2
Runs until Jun. 19th 2011

I got a full dose of dancing tonight! Top 20 Performances on SYTYCD and opening night for The National Ballet of Canada's latest mixed program dedicated to principal dancer Greta Hodgkinson, who is celebrating her 20th year with the company (20 years! And I thought ballet dancers were tossed out once they hit 30). Actually, the program unofficially also celebrated Sonia Rodriguez (who danced a principal role in Mozartiana) and Rebekah Rimsay (who dances in In The Upper Room), who are also celebrating their 20th year with the company! It's lovely to see these ladies still in great dancing shape after all those years (granted, my guess is they're probably not that much older than I am and started young) and that there is a longevity in the dance world that is notorious for a short career span.

The newest program gives us a taste of three celebrated choreographers. First up, is George Balanchine, probably the most renowned choreographers in the ballet world. While I'm probably showing my lack of ballet expertise when I state that Balanchine works are not my favorite, I always have to respect his more traditional ballet routines and that it takes the most talented skills and strengths to perform his work well. Sonia Rodriguez, Keiichi Hirano and Aleksandar Antonijevic dance it wonderfully, but yet again, I found myself admiring the work, more than I loved it.

The central piece of the show is Jerome Robbins' seldom danced Other Dances (due to a tight hold on permission), and it gives Greta Hodgkinson and Zdenek Konvalina the spotlight in this joyous, flighty, ethereal choreography from the genius mind of Jerome Robbins. It's a wonderful heavenly piece, with a simple pianist playing on stage as Greta and Zdenek dance a pas-de-deux with some solo moments that show the care and control of a piece that feels light and precious. Greta is a spectacular form, with a whispy dress (from costumes by Santo Loquasto) that enwraps her body yet flits and floats in the air as she moves across the stage. Her dress seems to have it's own choreography, adding to the special allure to Robbins' choreography. Zdenek seems to be having delightful fun with the dance, and seems to let go of the tight rules of ballet, though stumbles a bit when he seems to unravel too much.

But the big wow factor is Twyla Tharp's In the Upper Room, which is a superb combination of modern movements, smoke and lighting, and music by Philip Glass. Say what you will about Glass' music, but it seems specially made for the modern ballet, as it works symbiotically with Tharp's choreography as the dance and music seem to enhance one another. With costumes that look either like pajama's or an 80's workout video, the dreamlike state gives the dancers the freedom to let loose, while Tharp's movements are so emotionally thrilling, that I was practically in tears midway through the piece.

While parts were not as tight as it could have been, it was still thrilling to watch Tharp's piece again. In fact, I think I loved it even more this time around (with I believe, some added smoke that added to the theatricality and dreamy state of the piece).

Stephanie Hutchison, Rebekah Rimsay (who I adore. My interview with her, here), Jillian Vanstone, Tina Pereira, Jordana Daumec, Tanya Howard and Sonia Rodriguez were all in great form. It was great to see Rebekah get moments to partner with Piotr Stanczyk again, since they have such a great dancing chemistry together.

Corps de ballet's James Leja looked like a beast and really stood out from the men, while newer dancer Brendan Saye really brought an eloquence to his movements. Saye may not be in perfect form yet, but his tall stature seems so graceful that I think he'll be another dancer to watch for in the future. He just moved beautifully alongside his more experienced colleagues and I'm excited to see more from him.

In fact, there are so many exciting new up and comers in the company that the rotating cast of dancers on each night will give viewers more dancers to keep their eye on, and I'm sort of sad I'm missing out on seeing some of the others who did not dance tonight.

Meanwhile, So You Think You Can Dance Season 8 started the competition rounds and with one of the best Top 20 group around, there weren't any truly bad dances. Which of course, means it will be harder to cut dancers from the competition, especially while we've only seen one main dance so far.

Sadly, on this first night, Mitchell is already injured and forced to sit out. Man, this is starting to happen on the first ep of every season now isn't it?

Jordan Casanova and Tadd Gadduang
Style: Afro Jazz
Choreographed by: Sean Cheesman
Song: "Riding the Waves" - Afro Celt Sound System
Grade - Dance: B+
Grade - Boy: B+
Grade - Girl: B

Yay! And we start with a Sean Cheesman number! Which is always great! A fun number that didn't let up with the beat, although with some moments of some simpler steps to let the fresh dancers keep up. Jordan and Tadd seemed to get into the spirit of things, and with the exceptions of a few clunky partnering moments, did a fine job with it. It could have been slightly tighter with some added hard hitting bounce, but a pretty great way to start things off.

Here's the video of Jordan and Tadd's AfroJazz:

Sasha Mallory and Alexander Fost
Style: Contemporary
Choreographed by: Travis Wall
Song: "Stupid (Mark Bell Mix)" - Sarah McLachlan
Grade - Dance: A
Grade - Boy: B+
Grade - Girl: A-

Alexander and Sasha do a pretty magnificent job at conveying the dance power required in Travis Wall's piece. With the exception of a slightly clunky partnering between the two (which I'll attribute to first week jitters, and that they were supposed to be hating each other (though with that, one would expect an angered history lighting up that fire), it was a nice new pairing to look forward to in weeks to come.

Here's the video of Sasha and Alexander's Contemporary:

Clarice Ordaz and Jess LeProtto
Style: Broadway
Choreographed by: Tyce DiOrio
Song: "Me and My Baby" - Liza Minnelli
Grade - Dance: C+
Grade - Boy: A-
Grade - Girl: B+

Nice to see Kent helping out in rehearsals in the background. Too bad he wasn't choreographing, but I'll move on to the dancers, since I have nothing nice to say. Of course Jess "lucks" out with picking Broadway for his first dance. Nicely done since it was basically tailor made for him. Clarice does wonders with her long legs and was one of the dancers I took notice of in last week's Top 20 reveal, so I think there's lots more to come from her. Love Jess' dancing though his personality is already starting to wear a little thin.

Here's a video of Clarice and Jess' Broadway:

Ryan Ramirez and Ricky Jaime
Style: Hip-Hop
Choreographed by: Christopher Scott
Song: "Ain't No Sunshine" - Lighthouse Family
Grade - Dance: A-
Grade - Boy: B+
Grade - Girl:B+

I felt like Ryan slightly outdanced Ricky in the first half and then Ricky caught up and slightly outdanced Ryan in the second half. But a pretty good Hip-Hop routine from two contemporary dancers. Very impressive for an early round with great hope for the subsequent weeks. Really loved Scott's style of Hip-Hop. Am definitely excited that the LXD dancer is on board this season.

Here's the video of Ryan and Ricky's Hip-Hop:

Caitlynn Lawson and Mitchell Kelly Robert Roldan
Style: Jazz
Choreographed by: Sonya Tayeh
Song: "In For the Kill (Skream's LetLet's Get Rave Remix)" - La Roux
Grade - Dance: B+
Grade - Girl: B+

Caitlynn has the luck, or is it a detriment, to get to dance a Sonya piece with Robert, who was my favorite dancer from last season. Robert was made for Sonya pieces so he looked absolutely stunning as usual, and it was hard to look away and at the actual competitor. But from what I saw, Caitlynn did a great job keeping up, and while she doesn't quite have that finish that Robert puts into his dances (especially now that he's gone through a season and developed the confidence and finesse needed to execute a Sonya Jazz piece), it's a great showing for the first week of the competition.

Here's the video of Caitlynn and Robert's Jazz:

Miranda Maleski and Robert Taylor Jr.
Style: Jive
Choreographed by: Jason Gilkison
Song: "Runaway Baby" - Bruno Mars
Grade - Dance: A-
Grade - Boy: B+
Grade - Girl: B

First off, love the retro costumes. A nice fun jive routine with enough pizazz to hide some of the difficulties of the dance non-experts usually have with this. Miranda seemed to get the snap right, but felt a tad heavy, while Robert seemed to bounce like he was made of helium (which would explain his "Woo" voice) and while he could have been slightly tighter, Robert definitely played the part right.

Here's the video of Miranda and Robert's Jive:

Missy Morelli and Wadi Jones
Style: Jazz
Choreographed by: Sean Cheesman
Song: "Judas (R3Hab Remix)" - Lady Gaga
Grade - Dance: C+
Grade - Boy: B-
Grade - Girl: B-

Sexy demons. Oh yes. It's gotta be a Canadian choreographer. Reminds me of the kinkier stuff usually seen on the Canadian version of the show. Although definitely seemed easier than a usual Sean piece. Not my favorite from Sean (despite Nigel saying it was Sean's best work ever), but Wadi and Missy do good performances though there was a slightly messy ending. It could have been more precise in the movements, and the partnering seemed a bit awkward at times, though nothing unusual for first week. Not as together as they could have been either, but nothing that can't be fixed in future weeks. I have hope for these two.

Nigel and Mary think it was phenomenal, but maybe I'm used to higher quality choreo in the Canadian version, because I thought this was a lite version of Sean's usual stuff. I think the sexiness clouded the judges here.

Here's the video of Missy and Wadi's Jazz:

Melanie Moore and Marko Germar
Style: Contemporary
Choreographed by: Travis Wall
Song: "Turn To Stone" - Ingrid Michaelson
Grade - Dance: B+
Grade - Boy: A-
Grade - Girl: A

I think I have my favorite new pair. Loved Melanie and Marko individually during the audition and Top 20 reveal, and now of course they've been paired together, showing equal strength in their dancing. The partnership already seems to have gelled and it's just breathtaking to watch these two, even if the choreo from my lover Travis was bit literal and hokey.

Here's the video of Melanie and Mark's Contemporary:

Ashley Rich and Chris Koehl
Style: Hip-Hop
Choreographed by: Christopher Scott
Song: "Forget You" - Cee Lo Green
Grade - Dance: A
Grade - Boy: B+
Grade - Girl: B+

Ashley and Chris did a great job getting into character before the dancing started, but once they started moving to the beat, the big smiles on their face seemed to defy the story they were telling. On the other hand, they seemed to have fun with the Hip-Hop and bounced around the stage to such a joyous vibe. Love Ashley and she seemed so hip and cool, and Chris does a great job with the movement parts of the character.

Here's the video of Ashley and Chris' Hip-Hop:

Iveta Lukosiute and Nick Young
Style: Quickstep
Choreographed by: Jason Gilkison
Song: "Ballroom Blitz" - Sweet
Grade - Dance: A
Grade - Boy: A-
Grade - Girl: A

Poor Nick, getting stuck with the dreaded Quickstep in week one, just because he's partnered with the lone Ballroom dancer this season. On the other hand, maybe dancing with a Quickstep expert helped him, because Nick looked amazingly cool and comfortable doing the Quickstep, in a routine that was surprisingly fun and fresh.

Iveta, a world champion of the Quickstep, obviously looked light on her feet and just breezed through that, but she looked like she was having fun and that she was proud that Nick kept up, and while I feared I would be cringing through it all, Nick managed not only to kept up, but looked good doing it.

Here's the video of Iveta and Nick's Quickstep:

The Final Roundup:

The Dancers - Pairs Routine:
1st - Best of the Night: Melanie and Marko
2nd: Iveta and Nick
3rd: Sacha and Alexander
4th: Clarice and Jess
5th: Ashley and Chris
6th: Ryan and Ricky
7th: Caitlynn (with Robert)
8th: Jordan and Tadd
9th: Miranda and Robert
10th - Worst of the Night: Missy and Wadi

The Routines:
Best Routine of the Night: Jason Gilkison's Quickstep (Iveta and Nick)
2nd Best Routine of the Night: Christopher Scott's Hip-Hop (Ashley and Chris)
3rd Best Routine of the Night: Travis Wall's Contemporary (Sasha and Alexander)

The Predictions:
Bottom Three Pairs:
Mitchell is automatically in the bottom, so I'm not sure if an additional 3 pairs will dance for their life, or if his partner automatically gets thrown at the bottom as well?
I really have NO idea at this point. Everyone is strong. if they had a weaker week, it's not that they can't dance, it just wasn't their genre. There were no disasters, which is amazing considering it's first week. So I'm pretty much randomly picking couples that I think might just have the least fans.
Caitlynn
Miranda and Robert
Missy and Wadi

Should Go Home: No one yet. I feel everyone deserves a 2nd chance to show their stuff. But if I'm forced to choose, I guess I'd have to say Mitchell and Missy?
Going Home: Mitchell and Missy

This is how I rank all the dancers overall (based on dancing and personality): (To be honest, it is too early to truly rank them and partially based on audition perceptions)
Overall Ranking:
1. Marko
2. Nick
3. Melanie
4. Ashley
5. Sasha
6. Chris
7. Clarice
8. Jess
9. Tadd
10. Ryan
11. Ricky
12. Wadi
13. Robert
14. Iveta
15. Jordan
16. Alexander
17. Miranda
18. Caitlynn
19. Missy
20. Mitchell (since we haven't gotten a chance to see him)
