Danceworthy: Tina Pereira

National Ballet of Canada First Soloist Tina Pereira is taking on the lead role of Carmen, in a new expanded full length version running at The Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts this June 5th - 16th (with Tina Pereira performing the role of Carmen on performances June 6, 8, and 9th at the 2pm matinees). I spoke with Tina about taking on the iconic role of Carmen

Tapeworthy: Congrats on getting the principal role in the iconic role of Carmen, so how are you feeling?

Tina Pereira: It’s a pretty amazing role so so far so good!

Tapeworthy: And with such an iconic role, and the National Ballet still has a rotating cast of dancers that performs it, when you’re rehearsing and preparing the role, does the choreographer sort of just place the steps and movements for you, or how much of yourself do you get to put into this kind of performance?

Tina: That’s actually a good question. A lot of it is set for you but I think if a choreographer have different expectations and some are more specific with what they want, and others are more, it’s just good to see what you could bring to the character and to the role. And especially with Davide Bombana [choreographer of Carmen], if you even look at the casting, with me, Heather [Ogden] and Greta [Hodgkinson], we’re all so completely different in every single way, that also lets you know that he’s really looking for your individually interpretation of Carmen.

So for me, I think once he does set the material, then I feel free to add little things that maybe I would do as Carmen that wouldn’t be the same as the other girls and I think he would appreciate that.

Tapeworthy: Yah, like the emotional arcs and your take of the character yourself itself?

Tina: Yah and she’s such a strong character that you do want it to look authentic. So if that’s why he gives that sort of leeway, it’s because if you do something that, not everything looks the same on everybody, and If you do something that really suits you, or suits the character, it doesn’t necessarily mean that anybody else would feel the same way, or [feel] as comfortable doing what you do.

Tapeworthy: In rehearsing for Carmen, have you discovered anything about yourself?

Tina: (laughs) Yah, actually, I’m pretty much smack in the heart of that right now, that discovery process, because so far we’ve just been learning the new material, and just on Friday it was the first time we’ve tried to piece everything together. And today is the first time I’m having my first work-through. So I’ve spent time this weekend trying to find those moments, but I think it’s a process, and I’m still trying to remember some of the new parts of the choreography, so it’s not quite gelled but I hope after this rehearsal, and I have another run-through on Friday, so between these two times, I’m going to get a really good sense of what I want to do with the character.

Tapeworthy: You and the company are also preparing for the mixed program as well (June 19-23), and you dancers do this all the time and in such close proximity in timing, and they usually are such a different type of ballet, do you enjoy it or is it just crazy?

Tina: I think a little both. I went into this process expecting it to be a little crazy, I’ve done a lot of work on my own and I know there’s just not a lot of time so I have to take a lot of initiative upon myself to really know my material and if that means going home and just reviewing something, just so that I can use the rehearsal time wisely to do everything well instead of trying to remember all the choreography.

So I think at some point when you know you have a heavy load you have to take a lot of responsibility for it.

But as far as [also preparing for the mixed program], I think sometimes it’s hard to go from extremely classical to contemporary but I think at first it was hard but now I’m sort of more used to it. What’s different about it is that you can go into one rehearsal and be wearing pink tights and pink shoes and then go into another rehearsal and be in bare legs and flesh shoes. So sometimes you don’t have time change so if I’m doing Carmen with pink shoes and pink tights, which I had to do once, it feels very bizarre (laughs). I feel like I have to be ten times the character because it feels completely wrong.

Tapeworthy: Going on that, I noticed you have a love for fashion with your blog Ballerina Couture, did you want to speak more about that, and if you were planning to pursue a mix of ballet and fashion more in the future?

Tina: Yah, I definitely am! I just sort of stumbled upon it. I started with a blog and then I started to sew and then kind of fused the two and have a plan to make a leotard line. But that was more when the season isn’t so busy, but as for right now, Ballerina Couture is on a very big hold!

But in the future it’s definitely something, and anytime I have spare time, I love to be learning about fashion.

Tapeworthy: Now that you’ve gotten the role of Carmen, are there any dream roles you would love to play? Or any ballets you would love to perform in that you haven’t yet?

Tina: There are so many and we do have so many in our rep that I would like to do but that’s a hard question!

Tapeworthy: Is there a favorite ballet you just love watching as an audience member?

Tina: Onegin! I love Onegin. I could watch that over and over and cry every time.

Tapeworthy: Yes, that’s a beautiful one! To go off topic, I know you train so properly and have such incredible proper diets; do you have any favorite splurge foods you enjoy?

Tina: Believe it or not I’m a vegetarian and I love to eat healthy. Well I guess every once in a while I’ll have some junk food and if there’s a birthday I kind of love cake (laughs) but I don’t really crave junk on a normal basis.

Tapeworthy: What do you think about shows like So You Think You Can Dance and the popularity of dance in reality TV?

Tina: I think it’s amazing since there are so many people with a passion for dance, and I think a lot of people have grown up and danced at one point, or had a sister or a friend that was in dance and really enjoyed it, but to have a career in it, ballet or musical theatre have been the only venues for that, so for shows like that to spread the popularity of dance, I think is really good, and it’s not like they’re just doing Jazz dancing, there’s everything nowadays, from Hip-Hop to Bollywood, so it’s really nice that all these others interests are being exposed and becoming more mainstream, because a lot of people really do enjoy it, it just hasn’t been as accessible.

Tapeworthy: How did you start dancing? I know you came from Trinidad, when did you come to Canada, and did your love for ballet start there or here?

Tina: Here, I moved to Canada when I was 3 so I started dancing when I was 5 and my family lived in Mississauga so I just started at a local dance school from the age of 5 until the age of 12, which is when I went to the National Ballet School but I danced pretty much everything offered to me. So I have some experience with Jazz and Tap and Acrobatics and Lyrical dancing.

Actually one of the people I first started off dancing with was a runner up on the American So You Think You Can Dance and choreographs and he was a judge on the show so he’s now established himself very much in the So You Think You Can Dance world. Ironically enough.

Tapeworthy: Just for fun, what’s the last song you played on your iPod.

Tina: Oh boy, (thinks) I can’t remember but I like anything that makes me dance and anything with a good beat and that makes me move. I love Amy Winehouse’s “Valerie”. Happy music. I like Happy music!

Tapeworthy: Between Carmen and the modern dances, do you have a preference? Do you enjoy both types?

Tina: I’ve trained my whole life and we’ve trained every day in ballet school to be classical dancers but if I had a choice, I wouldn’t choose classical or modern, I would choose character work. I love more than anything is when I can portray a character. It’s the most fulfilling thing, and regardless of how hard or how easy it is, being in the zone of somebody else is just the most rewarding thing for me.

I think especially when you have a challenging role that is on pointe, and just to be in the character, is massive enough.

SYTYCD8 - All Stars with All-Stars

So You Think You Can Dance - Season 8 - Top 10 Performances and Results, Top 8 Performances and Results, Top 6 Performances - Eps. 816 - 820
Judges (Top 10): Nigel Lythgoe, Mary Murphy, Neil Patrick Harris
Judges (Top 8): Nigel Lythgoe, Mary Muprhy, Lady Gaga, Rob Marshall
Judgest (Top 6): Nigel Lythgoe, Mary Murphy, Lil C, Christina Applegate

I was off seeing theatre during my summer break so haven't had the chance to blog SYTYCD. And still haven't even caught up with the Top 8 yet, but will add to this post as soon as I do.

(So I missed SYTYCD because I saw the terrific Oklahoma! at Arena Stage in Washington D.C., with some amazing dancing in a theater-in-the-round production that felt young and fresh. Saw Broadway's How To Succeed in Business Without Really Trying again (for my 3rd time, because I'm totally biased due to my involvement with the production) and yet again, Rob Ashford's choreography astounded me, and Daniel Radcliffe's thrilling dance moves is just too much fun to watch. And while the rock-opera Jesus Christ Superstar isn't known for dance moves, the amazing new production at Stratford Shakespeare Festival in Ontario, melded in some fantastic modern dancing that made the musical (one I don't typically love) totally work for a modern age.)

Top 10 Performances:

Marko Germar with Chelsie Hightower
Style: Samba
Choreographed by: Jason Gilkison
Song: "Cinema Italiano (the Ron Fair Remix)" - Kate Hudson from Nine Soundtrack
Grade - Dance: A
Grade - Competitor: A

Nice to see Chelsie back on SYTYCD! And instead of Mark, pairing her with Marko is next to brilliant. Marko carries off the Samba in such a manly and suave manner, and looks like the ballroom expert that Chelsea is. Lovely and hot, and totally worked with the song.

Here's the video of Marko and Chelsie's Samba:

Jordan Casanova with Brandon Bryant
Style: Contemporary
Choreographed by: Dwight Rhoden & Desmond Richardson
Song: "Who You Are (Live Acoustic Version" - Jessie J
Grade - Dance: B
Grade - Competitor: B

I'm still in awe of Brandon's power and fluidity. Jordan was good. Worked nicely with Brandon but kind of unremarkable. Nothing bad but I've already forgotten her dancing as I'm typing this.

The judges loved her more than I did.

Here's the video of Jordan and Brandon's Contemporary:

Tadd Gadduang with Comfort Fedoke
Style: Hip-Hop
Choreographed by: Chuck Malodonado
Song: "Look At Me Now" - Chris Brown feat. Lil Wayne & Busta Rhymes
Grade - Dance: B
Grade - Competitor: B+

Tadd looked great with Comfort and while they weren't totally in sync, somehow it still looked pretty good. Tadd hit the beats just right for the first half, although then there was a bit of a a missy 2nd half where I felt he struggled to keep up.

Here's the video of Tadd and Comfort's Hip-Hop:

Mitchell Kelly with Melody Lacayanga
Style: Broadway
Choreographed by: Tyce DiOrio
Song: "Take Off With Us - from All That Jazz
Grade - Dance: D
Grade - Competitor: B+

Poor Mitchell. Great dancer, bum routine. This is gonna cost him big.

And it's all Tyce DiOrio's fault.

Here's the video of Mitchell and Melody's Broadway:

Caitlynn Lawson with Pasha Kovalev
Style: Argentine Tango
Choreographed by: Miriam Larici & Leonardo Barrionuevo
Song: "Malajunta" - Orquesta Color Tango
Grade - Dance: A-
Grade - Competitor: B+

Poor Caitlynn, one of the best dancers but being paired up with Pasha gives her no chance at being seen. Still can't take my eyes off Pasha. But from when I could tear my eyes off of Pasha, Cailtynn seemed to be doing wonderfully. That's all you can ask for when you're dancing with Pasha.

Here's the video of Caitlynn and Pasha's Argentine Tango:

Sasha Mallory and Stephen "Twitch" Boss
Style: Hip-Hop
Choreographed by: Christopher Scott
Song: "Misty Blue" - Dorothy Moore
Grade - Dance: A
Grade - Competitor: A

First great Sasha dance! As Nigel notes, this is the first time we've seen Sasha have such great chemistry with her partner, though that's less a dig a Sasha's skills as it is her former partners. Wonderfully done! I've always knew she was a great dancer but finally we get proof when paired up with another great dancer!

Here's the video of Sasha and Twitch's Hip-Hop:

Jess LeProtto with Kathryn McCormick
Style: Contemporary
Choreographed by: Stacey Tookey
Song: "The Lonely" - Christina Perri
Grade - Dance: A-
Grade - Competitor: A-

NPH notes that Jess usually mugs it too much, which can be true, but lately he's toned it down and has been wonderful. And being paired with Kathryn was probably a great benefit to Jess, who looked wonderful here.

Here's the video of Jess and Kathryn's Contemporary:

Melanie Moore with Pasha Kovalev
Style: Viennese Waltz
Choreographed by: Jason Gilkison
Song: "Everybody Hurts" - Tina Arena
Grade - Dance: A
Grade - Competitor: A

Melanie and Pasha. Forever. Please. I actually managed to look at the girl dancing with Pasha this time. That is saying a LOT (especially since his shirt was open here, hello!). Magical. Melanie was delicate and gliding without being fragile. It made the Viennese Waltz exciting, with some perfect lighting cues and a great flowy dress. Stunning.

Here's the video of Melanie and Pasha's Viennese Waltz:

Ricky Jaime with Allison Holker
Style: Jazz
Choreographed by: Tyce DiOrio
Song: "Precious Things" - Tori Amos
Grade - Dance: A-
Grade - Competitor: A-

Ricky is probably the strongest technical contemporary dancer but to me somehow lacks that ability to connect to the audience, but this is probably one of his strongest dances he's done, filled with passion and power. Of course it helps that Allison is his partner and she's always wonderful.

Here's the video of Ricky and Allison's Jazz:

Clarice Ordaz and Robert Roldan
Style: Bollywood
Choreographed by: Nakul Dev Mahajan
Song: "Aila Re Aila" - from Khatta Meetha
Grade - Dance: A
Grade - Competitor: A

Bollywood with Robert? How fun! Clarice was cute in it, but to be honest, I kept looking at Robert, who was my favorite dancer from last season. I will give it to Clarice that they were wonderfully in sync and looked perfectly balanced on the stage.

Here's the video of Clarice and Robert's Bollywood:

Top 6 Performances:

Melanie Moore with Stephen "Twitch" Boss
Style: Hip-Hop
Choreographed by: Napoleon and Tabitha D'umo
Song: "Roman's Revenge" - Nicki Minaj feat. Eminem
Grade - Dance: A-
Grade - Competitor: A-

Melanie is BEAUTIFUL and gets into the groove of NappyTabs Hip-Hop. She doesn't quite hit it as hard as Twitch (who seets quite the standard here), she manages to keep up, and her natural softness plays perfectl to the Red Riding Hood character here (against Twitch's Big Bad Wolf).

Here's the video of Melanie and Twitch's Hip-Hop:

Sasha Mallory and Kent Boyd
Style: Contemporary
Choreographed by: Tyce DiOrio
Song: "Fool of Me" - Me'Shell Ndegeocello
Grade - Dance: A-
Grade - Competitor: A

Aw I forgot how much I love Kent. If only he were around this year and paired with Sasha all the time. They would have been great together all season. Sasha has been dragged down but last week showed the power she truly has and here again, she gets to shine alone with all-star Kent, in a Tyce routine I could actually enjoy.

Seriously, finally Sasha gets to shine.

Here's the video of Sasha and Kent's Contemporary:

Marko Germar with Janette Manrara
Style: Paso Doble
Choreographed by: Dmitry Chaplin
Song: "Zorongo (Traditional)" - Antonia Gomez, Ely "La Gambita", Guillermo Basilisco & Paco Peña
Grade - Dance: B
Grade - Competitor: B+

It was good, and I love Marko look commanding. Lil C is right, Marko doesn't just dance the steps, he performs. If anything, he didn't quite spark with Janette but I guess the best dancer still doesn't have the best chemistry with every person.

Here's the video of Marko and Janette's Paso Doble:

Tadd Gadduang with Ellenore Scott
Style: Jazz
Choreographed by: Sonya Tayeh
Song: "The Gulag Orkestar" - Beirut
Grade - Dance: C
Grade - Competitor: B+

I didn't love the routine. Gimmicky without a payoff. Great work from the two dancers and another reminder that Ellenore could have easily won her season. Tadd is a lovely partner here though I feel like he was better support for Ellenore's dancing, but that's partly by Sonya's design, who gave Tadd very little dancing to do.

Here's the video of Tadd and Ellenore's Jazz:

Ricky Jaime with Jaimie Goodwin
Style: Contemporary
Choreographed by: Dee Caspary
Song: "Inside These Lines" - Trent Dabbs
Grade - Dance: B+
Grade - Competitor: B+

On the one hand, Ricky has beautiful fluidity in his movement. Giving him the sticks, and making him use his forearms to lift Jaimie is truly difficult and his strength carries through.

On the other hand, there has always been something that bothers me about Ricky and I don't quite connect. He seems like a sweet young man, who isn't annoying and truly humble. And I think the sticks emphasize the flaw that's been bothering me. Ricky dances beautifully, but in a way, dances like a child. Part of it is because of his thin and frail looking frame, but he looked like a kid whimsically having fun with sticks pretending to play drums, instead of a mature dancer that has child-like energy and exuberance.

Christina and Nigel actually pointed out things I'd agree with too. Applegate says that Ricky doesn't quite pull and push things to its ultimate possibilities, while Nigel says that Ricky is a high dancer and needs to dance lower, and I think both of these pointers, would help him dance less child-like.

Here's the video of Ricky and Jaimie's Contemporary:

Caitlynn Lawson with Pasha Kovalev
Style: Samba
Choreographed by: Dmitry Chaplin
Song: "Drop It Low (District 78 Remix)" - Kat DeLuna
Grade - Dance: A
Grade - Competitor: A

Caitlynn let Pasha lead and she followed. And it was SEXY HOT. Ok, I don't know the technicalities and I couldn't tell if she pulled face (as some of the judges said) but the pair (and here, it really was the PAIR) were just so together and smoldering that it was a lot of fun.

Also, if Pasha is reading this, would you please be my lover for all time? Muah!
(And for Caitlynn to be rehearsing between Pasha and Dmitry? Hello yes please!)

Here's the video of Caitlynn and Pasha's Samba:

Sasha Mallory and Ricky Jaime
Style: Waaking
Choreographed by: Kumari Sulaj
Song: "Schoolin' Life" - Beyoncé Knowles
Grade - Dance: A
Grade - Girl: A
Grade - Boy: B+

As I mentioned before, Ricky, while technically great, still dances at times like a little boy, and again made even more obvious here with Sasha who just out-whacked him. She had the snaps and the maturity and confidence in her moves, where as he looked soft and hesitant at times, just going through the motions but not giving each move the attention they deserved.

Here's the video of Sasha and Ricky's Waaking:

Melanie Moore and Tadd Gadduang
Style: Broadway
Choreographed by: Spencer Liff
Song: "(Where Do I Begin) Love Story (Away Team Remix)" - Shirley Bassey
Grade - Dance: A
Grade - Girl: A+
Grade - Boy: A

Simply dazzling. What a pairing. Dazzling. Perfection.

Here's the video of Melanie and Tadd's Broadway:

Caitlynn Lawson and Marko Germar
Style: Jazz
Choreographed by: Sonya Tayeh
Song: "Heavy in Your Arms" - Florence + the Machine
Grade - Dance: A+
Grade - Girl: A+
Grade - Boy: A+

HOLY MOLY SMOKEY. And other expletives. That was simply heart pumping.

As nigel says, a redeeming choreography from Sonya. Powerful, moving, paired with perfect music, danced to perfection by Caitlynn and Marko. Two powerhouses. One that finally shows her true talent, peaking just at the right time, and one that has been consistent the entire season.

Here's the video of Caitlynn and Marko's Jazz:

SYTYCD8 & SYTYCDC4 - Free Trade

So You Think You Can Dance - Season 8 - Top 14 Results, Top 12 Performances - Eps. - 813-814
Judges (Top 14): Nigel Lythgoe, Mary Murphy, Carmen Electra, Travis Wall
Judges (Top 12): Nigel Lythgoe, Mary Murphy, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Sonya Tayeh

So You Think You Can Dance Canada - Season 4 - Top 22 Performances - Ep. 406
Judges: Jean-Marc Généreux, Tré Armstrong, Luther Brown, Mary Murphy, Blake McGrath

So I've been a little busy, plus CTV is trying to kill me with 2 versions of the show running simultaneously, with an episode running Monday thru Thursday so I can barely keep up anymore.

And while I was originally annoyed at the Canadian version for starting so early, now that I've seen the Top 22 perform, I think I'm more excited with the Canadian version than I am with the current US version that's running. While the US dancers are good, with the exception of Marko and Melanie, I haven't been truly excited about anyone in recent weeks (especially since they kicked off Nick and Iveta).

Other interesting notes, with both versions now running at the same time, it's even easier to compare, and like I've said before, the camerawork on the US version just pales to the Canadian cameramen. It's funny that the US version seems to have upped their judges to 4 now so of course, the Canadian version has now upped it to 5 (with both panels having Mary Murphy, who somehow manages to be in LA and Toronto for each week's tapings).

And lets face it, the Canadian judges are far more annoying than the US judges, and no one can top Cat Deeley, but the dancers and choreographers in Canada are generally better. (Though if Marko and Melanie immigrated, we'd have a fantastic set of dancers). Can we also take Cat too?

So I didn't have time to blog last week's results show but basically Ashley and Chris got kicked off. It was about Chris' time, but I feel Ashley got dragged down with a sinking ship. Meanwhile, the judges kept bottom 3 Ryan and Ricky yet again, and while I recognize that they are spectacular technical dancers, and manage to play their dance roles with passion, there seems to be a disconnect that I can't pinpoint, but I think many other people also notice.

Top 14 Group Dance
Style: Bollywood
Choreographed by: Nakul Dev Mahajan
Song: "Kata Kata" from Raavan
Seriously, can Bollywood NOT look fun?

Dance for your Lives from Chris, Jordan, Tadd, Ryan and Ricky (and missing Ashley's solo):

Meanwhile, last night's Canadian results:

Top 22 Group Dance
Style: Hip-Hop
Choreographed by: Luther Brown
Song: "On the Floor" - Jennifer Lopez feat. Pitbull
Not usually a Luther choreo fan but this is probably one of his best, probably because he uses what he's got and lets the dancers show off their specialties.

My Predictions from Top 22 Canadian Performances:
Should Go Home: Sadly, I guess I'll say Lauren and JP by default? Even though both are excellent dancers?
Bottom 3 Couples:
Geisha and Adam A.
Carlena and Boneless
Cassandra and François
Will Go Home: Geisha and Adam A.

I was partially right:
Bottom 3 was actually:
Geisha and Adam A.
Cassandra and François
Lauren and Rodrigo

And while I thought they would send Lauren or Geisha and Adam A home, I was surprised they sent Cassandra home instead, while I wasn't surprised they sent poor Adam A. home, but with another chance next year since they admitted that he shouldn't have danced with his injury on performance night.

Cause lets admit it, he was a terrific dancer but he probably wasn't cast in the first place because he's a bit short. Right? Cause his dancing skills, even with an injury, were superb.

So I'm a little short on time so my notes are pretty quick this week:

Sasha Mallory and Alexander Fost
Dance #1
Style: Paso Doble
Choreographed by: Tony Meredith and Melanie LaPatin
Song: "Alley Dash/March of the Trolls" - Taylor Long/Rick Powell
Grade - Dance: B
Grade - Boy: B
Grade - Girl: B+

Paso Doble is not easy but I thought Alex upped his game just in time. Always loved Sasha but I'm starting to forget she's still around and I'm not sure that's a good sign.

Great attempt, mostly well done, but I'm just not that excited enough about this to write any more.

Here's the video of Sasha and Alexander's Paso Doble:

Jordan Casanova and Tadd Gadduang
Dance #1
Style: Contemporary
Choreographed by: Travis Wall
Song: "Brotsjór" - Ólafur Arnalds
Grade - Dance: B
Grade - Boy: B+
Grade - Girl: B+

A decent dance but not one of Travis' best, and while I thought it was well danced, the moment it was over and the judges started speaking, I already forgot what I just watched.

Well executed but lacking that extra sparkle that Jordan and Tadd usually have, or what a great dance makes.

Here's the video of Jordan and Tadd's Contemporary

Ryan Ramirez and Ricky Jaime
Dance #1
Style: Broadway
Choreographed by: Spencer Liff
Song: "All I Need is The Girl" - Frank Sinatra
Grade - Dance:C+
Grade - Girl: B-
Grade - Boy: B-

Didn't love the dance at all and felt it was kind of a bland choreography danced with Ryan and Ricky's usual technical aptitude but without any spirit. The judges note them for that but Sonya, bless her heart, doesn't excuse the dancers for lacking spirit with poor material, as dancers should be giving it their all no matter what they are given.

Love Spencer, he's so pretty, but he's usually much better than this.

Here's the video of Ryan and Ricky's Broadway:

Caitlynn Lawson and Mitchell Kelly
Dance #1
Style: Hip-Hop
Choreographed by: Christopher Scott
Song: "Break the Chain - Lupe Fiasco feat. Eric Turner and Sway
Grade - Dance: C
Grade - Girl: B-
Grade - Boy: C+

What the hell was that? I'm loving Caitlynn, and I respect her attempt, but it was just no. But it was better and harder hitting than Mitchell (who is usually much better than this). But the routine itself, with it's dark message about Uganda or something in Africa and clit faces and fuck frogs and such seemed totally out of place and out of spirit. Caitlynn and Mitchell didn't really have much of a chance, and they couldn't even fudge their way around the hip-hopping.

Here's the video of Caitlynn and Mitchell's Hip-Hop:

Melanie Moore and Marko Germar
Dance #1
Style: Tango
Choreographed by: Louis Van Amster
Song: "Triptico" - Gotan Project
Grade - Dance: B+
Grade - Boy: B
Grade - Girl: B

Ok, that final flip was amazing, but I thought this was the first time Marko and Melanie weren't as great as they usually were. Nigel thought they did a tremendous job but I thought it looked shaky and less confidence.

They managed to convey the attitude and on quick glance, it could have been convincing, but overall, this is probably their worst performance yet.

Here's the video of Melanie and Marko's Tango:

Clarice Ordaz and Jess LeProtto
Dance #1
Style: Lyrical Hip-Hop
Choreographed by: Christopher Scott
Song: "Just The Way You Are" - Boyce Avenue
Grade - Dance: A
Grade - Boy: A
Grade - Girl: A-

First off, I love this version of the song. Who is this Boyce Avenue?

Loved the dance, loved it all except for that frightening picture at the end.

Jess has been slowly winning me over week after week and I think this is the dance that finally puts me over and he is officially on my good side. No fence anymore.

Clarice has such a beauty in her dancing and while I feel she hasn't been as consistent, I thought she did a wonderful job here.

Here's the video of Clarice and Jess' Lyrical Hip-Hop:

Sasha Mallory and Alexander Fost
Dance #2
Style: Jazz
Choreographed by: Tyce DiOrio
Song: "That's Life" - Aretha Franklin
Grade - Dance: B-
Grade - Boy: B
Grade - Girl: B

I first saw this at the gym and watched it from the halfway point, and I thought it was a total mess. Then I found out who choreo'd and it all made sense.

Re-watching it didn't really help, and yet the judges heap praise on Tyce's choreo again and I'm mystified.

I thought Alex and Sasha did a fine job, but I was nowhere near as excited as the judges were about this. Alex definitely upped his game this week but I've already partially written him off, and I feel like he's pulling Sasha down with him.

Here's the video of Sasha and Alexander's Jazz:
Coming Soon

Jordan Casanova and Tadd Gadduang
Dance #2
Style: Broadway
Choreographed by: Spencer Liff
Song: "Out Tonight" - Daphne Ruben Vega from Rent (Original Cast Recording)
Grade - Dance: C+
Grade - Boy: B
Grade - Girl: B+

The judges skirted around the issue but basically called out Spencer for another bad routine, but they partially blamed the dancers for the lack of pizzazz but while I didn't think it was amazing either, I thought they did a pretty good job with what they were given.

I didn't really get Nigel's comment about it needing to be quirkier. Has he not seen Rent?

Here's the video of Jordan and Tadd's Broadway:

Ryan Ramirez and Ricky Jaime
Dance #2
Style: Cha-Cha-Cha
Choreographed by: Louis Van Amstel
Song: "Tonight (I'm Lovin' You)" - Enrique Iglesias feat. Ludacris
Grade - Dance: A-
Grade - Girl: B
Grade - Boy: B+

I thought Ricky far outperformed Ryan here in the footwork, though when Ryan has to do that showgirl thing, she's really good at keeping that smile during her movements. Which may also be the reason why she seems annoying in her dancing. Too fake.

Here's the video of Ryan and Ricky's Cha-Cha-Cha:

Caitlynn Lawson and Mitchell Kelly
Dance #2
Style: Jazz
Choreographed by: Travis Wall
Song: "Piece of My Heart - Janis Joplin
Grade - Dance: A-
Grade - Girl: A-
Grade - Boy: A-

Thank goodness they had a second dance to prove that they're basically just behind Marko and Melanie. Simply superb dancing in a nice routine by Travis (that also makes up for his earlier blander routine).

Here's the video of Caitlynn and Mitchell's Jazz:

Melanie Moore and Marko Germar
Dance #2
Style: Contemporary
Choreographed by: Dee Caspary
Song: "Skin & Bones" - David J. Roch
Grade - Dance: A
Grade - Boy: A
Grade - Girl: A

Oh thank god the perfection of Marko and Melanie are back again. Thank goodness for Dance #2. Sadly though, together for the last time (until the finals I'm guessing).

Here's the video of Melanie and Marko's Contemporary:

Clarice Ordaz and Jess LeProtto
Dance #2
Style: Jive
Choreographed by: Tony Meredith and Melanie LaPatin
Song: "Ain't Nothing Wrong With That" - Robert Randolph & the Family Band
Grade - Dance: A-
Grade - Boy: A-
Grade - Girl: A-

I loved the rocking music but it didn't seem to... well... jive with the dancing. But then I realized it WASN'T their dancing. The music just feels a bit too heavy for the Jive. If you subtract the music and watch the dancing independently, you'll notice how bouncy Clarice and Jess were, which is exactly what this should feel like.

Jess particularly seemed to be extra bouncy, while Clarice kicked her nice long legs up into the air with a hot fervor.

Here's the video of Clarice and Jess' Jive:
