Happy Pride!

So, pride's great and all, but let's be frank. Seeing all the hot guys walking on Church street (the "village" in Toronto and the backdrop for Queer as Folk) during pride, with so many happy couplings, is sometimes f#$king depressing and nauseating. Ain't it? I mean, it's great that we don't have to fight for gay marriage up here in Canada anymore but that just makes the fact that I'm far from getting married all the more depressing.

But whatever, I'm single and fabulous. !. ?. No. !

Here's another guy I love following on youtube. DaveyWavey. He spews cheesy Oprah-type affirmations but he always does it shirtless. You gotta love that! Here he happens to spew about being your own boyfriend to find a boyfriend. I'd be more cynical about it if he weren't so adorable and gay about it all:



I've also followed Jeffrey Self and Cole for like EVER (well, a long time before everyone else started discovering them thank you very much yes I'm totally taking claim of them) but now they're HUGE and have their own TV show Jeffrey and Cole Caserole! Okay, so it's on Logo (Fridays at 11pm), the gay channel way up in the cable numbers if you even get it, but it's nice to see them spin it off into something from their youtube vids! Sadly, I don't get to see their show since we don't have Logo here in Canada but I'll have to hunt for them online (the irony isn't it? I had easier access when it was just simply their youtube vids). (Oh wait, he's posted it on his own website! YAY! Or here at the Logo site))

Gavin's Proud of His Hair

I love that Gavin Creel is working hard to fight for the right to marry me!

The latest episode (6) of his Broadway Impact series is up, with his Hair friends sending out proud messages for this week's Pride festivities and for Marriage Equality! (HAPPY PRIDE WEEK!)



I also FINALLY saw Hair on Broadway (after seeing it twice in the park last year). In fact, I saw it twice last week! It was just as AMAZING as I remembered it and I'll have a re-review soon but Cassie Levy, Sasha Allen and Gavin Creel are EXCELLENT additions and the transfer to a Broadway theatre only tightened the experience and may have actually improved on a production I thought was already nearly perfect. (My main concern from the park was Sheila but Cassie Levy fixed that here).

Oh Gavin Creel. LOVE YOU. (Looking adorable here with cutie petewtie Daniel Reichard (Jersey Boys), the awesome Heidi Blickenstaff, and stunning Sutton Foster at Sunday's Broadway Bares. May NSFW) Gavin kinda looks like a muppet doesn't he? And I say this as a lover of The Muppets. He has big googley eyes, beautiful flat lips and a square jaw. I just want to grab his hair and press our faces... er... sorry. TMI. But I love his hair no matter how it looks! (And doesn't it look soft like the fur on top of some of those monster muppets? Like it would sway and stay in place whichever way you sweep it? (I have chinese hair, my hair does NOTHING I tell it to))

That's So Gay! - Books And Better Off Ted

Dan Savage's The Kid The Musical? Seriously? Considering it's one of my favorite books, one that I recommend to ANYONE having a baby, whether you're gay or straight, and a book (full title: The Kid: (What Happened After My Boyfriend and I Decided to Go Get Pregnant) an Adoption Story) that could make me laugh and cry, all within a single paragraph, why not a musical? (Here's EW's review)

And for all those getting married, gay or straight, I highly recommend Dan Savage's other book The Commitment. It's a good book to read before you get married, whether you have doubts or not (and especially if you have doubts).

While I'm on gays I love, Better Off Ted's geeky labrat and out-in-real-life Jonathan Slavin speaks out about actors playing gay with his views here and here.

And how awesome was this week's Better Off Ted?

Better Off Ted - Through Rose Colored HAZMAT Suits, Racial Sensitivity, Win Some, Dose Some, Goodbye, Mr. Chips - Eps. 103-106

Actually, with the exception of the 3rd episode, which kind of fell flat, the whole series has been hysterical.

The racially sensitive motion sensor? The white guys hired to shadow the black employees? The accidental drugging of Linda? Anything Portia de Rossi as Veronica? Kristoffer Polaha!?! (above with Jay Harrington, who has finally found a great show to exude his charms and likability).

And Veronica stealing all the ID cards to secretly help out Ted? Awesome!!!

WHY IS NO ONE WATCHING THIS SHOW? Oh sure, you're all gonna discover it on DVD years from now, just like you did for Arrested Development, and then wonder why they didn't make more seasons. I hate you all.

Daytime Gaytime

I'm watching Ted Haggart on Oprah right now and I'm not really buying any of it (including the poor hair dye job). I like that Oprah is calling him and his wife Gayle on some of their delusions, but I will respect that he understands that he's truly confused about his sexuality and doesn't want to be pegged with a label (and supposedly anything else for that matter). Fine, I get it, but defending the church that booted him out is nauseating.

I feel bad for the kids though. They actually seem pretty well adjusted, considering.

OMG, he really hasn't changed has he? He's still spewing the church stuff as a sideways slight towards gays. WTF? And this was taped before the new Grant revelation.

Plus was it me or did gay-for-pay porn star Aaron James strangely come off (no pun intended) the best on The Tyra Banks Show last week on her "Gay for Pay" episode? You know, the one all the gay blogs commented on if only to show the picture of gay porn star cutie Kurt Wild (and I'm going to be no exception! But I'll save it for after the jump. Though I'm not going to link to his "body of work". I'll let you google that yourself, :P).

Strangely, I didn't cringe at Kurt (above left, below left) or Aaron's (above centre, below right) responsive and if anything, their "gay for pay" experiences have taught them to be pretty good spokesman for the gays (instead of spewing some macho stuff to make up for their work). (Here's some of the clips). And you gotta hand it to Tyra for trying her best (yet still being good ol' Tyra) and playing the salacious cards but still keeping it real and supportive of the gays (in her usual self-involved roundabout way). AfterElton has a pretty good review of the show. I think Dean (above right) spoke pretty well too but I think I couldn't stop laughing at his frosted tips to actually take his claims to straightness seriously.

I'm not even going to bother questioning their straightness or not, and whether they delude themselves or just really do it for the money, but there has got to be some irony (that's not the word I want but I can't think what else it could be) to the fact that the porn stars seem more grounded than Ted Haggart.

Meanwhile, was it me or was the Advocate guy a little off-putting? And sraightphobic? Seriously dude, what a way to make gays look defensive and antagonistic.

Things got a little yucky when some of the straight bartenders talked about the sleazy gay men offering them money for sexual encounters but at least Tyra pointed out that ALL men are like that (gay or straight) and that "Men are NASTY". Oh Tyra.

On a non-gay-related note (well, depending on what you believed), I passed by The Doctors and Big Brother king Will Kirby was on. Seriously? It's not bad enough that The Bachelor's Dr. Travis Stork co-hosts, but Kirby? I know he's a "REAL" doctor but I cannot take this show seriously, informative or not.

And on Bonnie Hunt today, there's a cute (if slightly cheesy) illusionist on. Joel Ward. Between his demeanor and the blond hair, he reminds me a bit of NPH! Yah, that's all. No idea if he's gay or straight. Though he did mention he is single. I just wanted to mention him. Adorable! I'm shameless!

In Bobby's Lifetime

I'm actually really jealous of everyone that can get Lifetime network because I really want to see Prayers for Bobby which premieres at 9pm tonight (Saturday, January 24th 2009). At this point, no word if it will get played here in Canada. Here's the trailer:



Word is Sigourney Weaver is excellent and the movie is getting pretty great reviews. Weaver plays Mary Griffith, a devout Christian whose son Bobby (Ryan Kelly from Mean Creek) outs himself and is driven to suicide. It's based on a true story.

Plus Henry Czerny as the father! Man I missed him! (He of Patriot Games and many Canadian movies).

Here's the synopsis:
"In "Prayers for Bobby," Mary Griffith (Sigourney Weaver) is a devout Christian who raises her children with the conservative teachings of the Presbyterian Church. However, when her son Bobby (Ryan Kelly) confides to his older brother he may be gay, life changes for the entire family after Mary learns about his secret. While Bobby's father and siblings slowly come to terms with his homosexuality, Mary believes God can cure him of what she considers his 'sin' and persuades Bobby to pray harder and seek solace in church activities in hopes of changing him. Desperate for his mother's approval, Bobby does what is asked of him, but through it all, the church's apparent disapproval of homosexuality causes him to grow increasingly withdrawn and depressed. Guilty over the pain he is causing Mary, Bobby moves away, yet hopes that some day his mother will accept him. His subsequent depression and self-loathing intensifies as he blames himself for not being the 'perfect' son and is driven to suicide. Faced with their tragedy, Mary begins to question her faith when she receives no answers from her pastor concerning her devastating loss. Through her long and emotional journey, Mary slowly reaches out to the gay community and discovers unexpected support from a very unlikely source. The film is based on the 1995 Leroy Aarons book of the same name."

Pretty Good, Pretty Gay(s) - Beautiful People

I caught up with the entire BBCTwo series Beautiful People this past weekend. It's only 6 episodes of 30 min. each so it's not a huge feet.

It's not a musical show but check this clip out (with snippets of The Wiz, Funny Girl, Annie etc.):



How fabulous was that? And hilarious? While the series has its up and downs and quite inconsistent overall, when the show hits highs, it's so camp and so gay that it'll make everything look pretty!

Here's one more musical moment: Simon and Kylie Lip Sync to "Don't Cry Out Loud" (Melissa Manchester). HILARIOUS! Watch the girls in the back sneak out of the room. FABULOUS!:



If you can't tell already, Beautiful People is VERY CAMP and VERY GAY! Fabulous! It's based on the memoirs of Simon Doonan and the show traces Adult Simon (Samuel Barnett, The History Boys) who is now a fabulous window dresser at Barney's in New York where he's with his hot boyfriend Sacha (Gary Amers) all as he narrates stories from his childhood way back in 1997 (I know. '97 is now apparently historic and nostalgic. Gawd I'm getting old).

'97 Simon Doonan (a sweet Luke Ward-Wilkinson) hangs out with best friend Kylie (a snap snapworthy Layton Williams who screams fabulous, West End's Billy Elliot) in little ol' Reading, England. Actually it's Kyle, but he goes by his favorite singer Kylie Minogue.

Simon lives with his dysfunctional and trashy but lovable and loving parents Debbie (a sharp yet loving Olivia Colman) and Andy (a crushworthy Aidan McArdle), sister Ashlene (Sophie Ash) and Auntie Hayley (Meera Syal) who isn't actually their auntie AND is East Indian AND is slightly blind who has a slightly blind seeing-eye dog. It's a bit much and a bit crass at times but the general love towards the VERY fey young Simon is sweet and rarely seen.

The family doesn't even really make Simon's gayness as a problem. Even father Andy lets him be, although he does give the boy a lesson in footy at one point to man him up after being beaten up at school. Only Kylie's mom Reba (Sarah Niles) constantly berates Simon and Kylie (but then she seems to berate everyone else too). There's also Tameka (Tameka Empson from another gay treasure Beautiful Thing), an outspoken rum loving hairdresser and Narg (Oscar nominee Brenda Fricker) as the now-nasty grandma.

The show veers from crass to camp but at its heart, there's a sweetness to the stories of Simon Doonan and it's so pro-gay both in the flashbacks and in the present day narrative bookends that I still enjoyed the show for what it is. The performances by the young Ward-Wilkinson and Williams are incredibly endearing. Watching the parents learning to parent (while they read their books in bed, love the ever-changing books they are reading) is sweet, especially with Colman and McArdles.

There are tons of odd bits and storylines that sometimes tries too hard to make it quirky but how can you hate a show with something like this?:

So You Think You Can Dance Canada Mia Michael's Muses Lives On!

Sorry folks, no post on So You Think You Can Dance Canada Top 8 Performance Show today. Mainly because I'm in New York and won't get to watch it all until next week myself (at the very earliest unless vids go up on youtube, but last week's video's were only finally up now. Oh, so to update those outside Canada, Danny and Kaitlyn were booted off, just like I predicted).

Instead, I saw Travis Wall at Barracuda last night/this morning. And like the bad gay I am, I was too chicken s#!t to talk to him/fawn/maul him/grab him into a stall in the loo. Sadly, there was no dancing (only a fab drag queen act that Mr. Wall was totally into) but the boy IS cute from close up (if not slightly small. He only goes up to my eyes (granted, I'm 6'1")). Seriously, on the same day I saw Harry Potter's wee wee on stage (at Equus), I think I'm more excited about spotting Travis at a gay club (which I guess sort of confirms things we all already knew?).

Seriously. Travis is simply one of the best, if not THE best dancer on the show so far (and you know I love some of my other dancers a LOT). Why DIDN'T I kidnap him tonight? Dangit.

So the bottom 3 were Kaitlyn, Natalli, Miles and Danny. Exactly as I fearfully predicted. WTF Canada? I might just not come back.

Boy Zone

I love Boyzone and love them even more now! I knew there was a reason why they were called Boyzone! Now when is my other favorite boyband Westlife going to show Mark with his guy in a video (assuming they still make videos)? Here's Boyzone's new video "Better" with the first appearance by a gay male couple in a boyband video (I know, it's a lot of nouns and adjectives but hey, it's a first! and a start):



I have no shame in admitting I have all their albums (including the "Best of" repeat), I have all of lead Ronan Keating's albums, and I was the one who bought Stephen Gately's album.

Stephen Gately is "married" ("in a civil partnership" which is the true fact, doesn't seem to have quite the same ring to it (so fight on!)) to Andy Cowles.

In fact, I always loved Gately's "I Believe" that plays at the end of Billy Elliot (the movie and it's too bad it's not in the musical because that's about the only thing I felt was missing from the stage version, which incidentally, opens tomorrow on Broadway)

Oh man, now I want to watch the movie again! Jamie Bell is so adorable!

I also loved Stephen Gately's "New Beginning" which is essentially his little coming out anthem:


Ronan Keating is probably most famous for "When You Say Nothing At All" from the Notting Hill soundtrack:


Boyzone's most famous song is probably "No Matter What" which like all British boybands, seemed to sweep the entire world except North America (probably because people gag on that kind of schmaltz here but personally I love it! Well except that starting "cheeka cha ha ha" part):

Matthew Sheppard Should Be 31 By Now

Matthew Sheppard was beaten and left for dead 10 years ago tonight (he died 5 days later) just after midnight on October 7th 1998.

There is still so much to say about this sad story and yet so little is really needed at this point, and I'm still deeply affected by that tragic event. I was basically the same age as Matthew and still exploring what it was to be gay, but I was luckily living in a more accepting Montreal and not in the plains of Wyoming and truly never had to deal with hate or violent homophobia.

I've actually driven through Wyoming and the land is truly a beautiful place, but those fences are so prevalent around the slightly rolling hills that they seem to take on a new haunting undertone that sadly ruins the beautiful landscape. I only hope attitudes have changed to match the beauty of the land.

Judy Sheppard, Matthew's mother, who has become an incredible advocate for gay rights and started the The Matthew Sheppard Foundation to stop hate and replacing it with understanding, compassion and acceptance. She spoke on The Early Show this morning about the progress (or lack thereof). (Video below)

In the 10 years since, The Laramie Project theatrically (and later in film) explored the issues surrounding the events that happened in the small town of Wyoming and now the original writers will return to interview the citizens again to see how it is 10 years later in order to write an epilogue.

Oh Gay! How Cute Is Matthew Mitcham? - The 2008 Beijing Olympics Superficial Coverage

Okay, one last post on the Beijing Olympics. Just because Matthew Mitcham was so cute winning the Gold medal in the Men's 10m Platform Diving. Wasn't Matthew of Australia just so cute winning the Gold medal in the Men's 10m Platform Diving?

Matthew Mitcham is also the first out athlete to compete for Australia and its nice to see a young athlete so out and proud (and even if he wasn't, his happy clap last night and his reaction to his spectacular final dive that clinched him the Gold was pretty obvious, seriously, so cute!).

He's also the current coverboy for The Advocate and hopefully will more athletes won't have to wait until they retire before they come out.

It's Hot All Of A Sudden

(Somehow life and work got crazy busy again so even though I have posts in the works from finally catching up with The Office, Beauty and the Geek, and most of Gossip Girl and Greek (damn you Canadian channels for still not putting these two shows ontime along with their US counterparts) plus reviews of Saved the Musical, Altar Boyz (again, this time with SYTYCD3's Neil Haskell, see below), and The Visit (the musical at the Signature in DC), plus my Best of TV post, a Crushworthy Broadway Boys post (in addition to this one) and more on Men in Trees (the show, not actually men in trees. I wish) it will all have to wait. In the meantime, here's some cheap gratuituous photos for your enjoyment!
I was in DC over the weekend where it was quite hot, and now that I'm back in Toronto, the weather has (finally) turned really warm too! Woo!

So just in time for the HOT weather, AfterElton has announced their Hot 100 for this year (nice segue eh? Not subtle at ALL).(Well apologies to my straight male readers or lesbian female ones. That list probably won't interest you. Maybe this one will.)

Since I haven't actually produced any posts, this will be it for now, because it's easy and I'm shallow. So discuss (the hot 100, not my shallowness).

Here's a starter: Luke MacFarlane (Brothers & Sisters) jumped from non-existent on the list to #3. Nice! (and 2 CDN's made the Top 10!)

Incidentally, these two candid (stalkerish paparrazzi photos I took creepily while waiting for my friend in front of the New World Stages Theatre in New York the previous weekend) photos show two of my favorite hotties that didn't make the list (well, they are too obscure in the general public but kind of known to the gays that fawn over them).

The weird thing about the first photo was that I had JUST discovered Jeffrey Self's hilarious youtube videos, where he seems to be friends with half of Broadway including Hunter Bell ([title of show]) and Michael Arden. Then there he was (back turned to the camera), with Michael Arden (Bare: A Pop Opera, The Return of Jezebel James), on 50th Street.

And then Neil Haskell joined them (he and Arden co-starred in The Times They Are A Changin'). Sadly he was in a rush to get to the theatre (for the Altar Boyz performance I was seeing) because if he hadn't been so quick I would have taken a better picture/kidnapped him for my own pleasure:

Will John McCain Walk Ellen Down The Aisle?

Towleroad had also transcribed the Ellen clip of her interview with John McCain where she nicely grills him on his anti-gay marriage stance.

MCCAIN: I just believe in the unique status of marriage between man and woman. And I know that we have a respectful disagreement on that issue.

ELLEN: Mm-hmm. Yeah. I think that it is looked at and some people are saying the same that blacks and women did not have the right to vote. Women just got the right to vote in 1920. Blacks didn't have the right to vote till 1870. It just feels like there's this old way of thinking (that) we are not all the same. We are all the same people. All of us. You're no different than I am. Our love is the same. (applause) To me what it feels like just, you know, I will speak for myself...it feels when someone says you can have a contract and you'll still have insurance and you'll get all that. It sounds to me like saying well you can sit there (points in one direction), you just can't sit there (points in another direction). That's what it sounds like to me. It doesn't feel inclusive. It feels isolated. It feels like we aren't owed the same things and the same wording.

MCCAIN: Well, I've heard you articulate that position in a very eloquent fashion. We just have a disagreement and I, along with many, many others wish you every happiness.

ELLEN: Thank you. So you'll walk me down the aisle? Is that what you said?

(laughter)

MCCAIN: Touché
