Burning Pains - Burn Notice and Royal Pains

Burn Notice - Friends and Family - Ep. 301 - Season Premiere (Thursday, June 4th at 9pm on USA)
Royal Pains - Pilot - Ep. 101 - Series Premiere (Thursday, June 4th at 10pm on USA)

So you already know I love Burn Notice and you can catch up with DVD's I'm giving away FREE!!! USA was nice enough to let me see the first episode, as well as the first episode of its new show Royal Pains. YAY USA!!!

Now, the version of Royal Pains I got was apparently not the final edit, and considering it was 106 min. long, I think there were still edits going to be made. Let's hope. Because it started out REAL slow and cliched and looking like a half a dozen other bland shows meshed into one. The directing style was all over the place, the writing full of lazy lines, and the characters were stock.

But hang on just a second.

The show, much like its lead star Mark Feuerstein, comes across as annoying and slightly abrasive at first. I've never really been a fan of Mark. Or that's how I remember it. First impressions right? But thinking back, I've always ended up liking him by the end of the show/movie. He softens and while I still don't think he's leading man status, he's comfortable to watch.

And like the show that surrounds him, as the premise of the show gets tighter and loopier, it all becomes far more entertaining and likable.

Mark plays Hank Lawson, an up-and-coming doctor who, because he sticks with his morals, is fired and left to rot while losing his girlfriend, posessions and purpose in life. In comes his accountant nerd brother Evan (Paulo Constanzo, one of the better things from Joey) and off they go to the Hamptons for some partying with the rich. That's when it gets shiftier and stranger, but it's also where the eventual fun comes in, albeit after a strange appearance from Campbell Scott as a super rich German royal (Oh, I guess that's where the Royal comes in).

Anyways, Hank ends up saving rich people with his medical expertise, a hot young thing named Divka (Reshma Shetty) shows up out of nowhere as his assistant, and slowly he gets pushed to become a doctor on mansioncall to the rich.

It's an especially fun concept when one of the rich is the loopy Mrs. Newberg played by the delightfully loopy Broadway diva Christine Ebersole (Grey Gardens, Blithe Spirit, apparently a re-occuring character here). Of course, the show writes it in that she had a bad boob job that she's freaking out about. Yet she continues to hold out one boob so blantantly (see pic above) that it makes no sense. But whatever. It's a funny moment right?

So as ludicrous and as inconsistent as the stories and characters get, by the time Christine Ebersole does show up, the show has seemed to get to its point and its rhythm to show us what future episodes will really feel like. And if we get to see more architecturally stunning homes in the summer beach setting of the Hamptons with the amusing Shetty, Ebersole and Costanzo peppering away at Mark Feuerstein, why not enjoy it for what it is? A relatively painless breezy summer TV series. (Jill Casey is also in the show as a fellow doctor and an assumed love interest but I'll save that for the future).

Over on Burn Notice, Michael has survived his jump into the waters (when John Mahoney cuts off his ties) and Michael finds himself without the protection of the same people that were chasing him. He appears back on the grid, and an old colleague tracks him down for help.

Without giving too much away, the show tries to barrel ahead with the ongoing mystery behind Michael's burn notice but the first episode tries to tie up loose ends while hammering at the emotional core behind his life (that of his mom and Fi).

While there are the requisite twists and turns, it's a little less fun compared to usual, since it's cleaning up some previous business but it only cements the chemistry between Jeffrey Donovan and Gabrielle Anwar, and as always, Jeffrey Donovan alone is enough to hold the show down, even in a lesser episode.

Get Burned Again! The Burn Notice Contest

Burn Notice returns again tomorrow, June 4th, just in time to heat up the summer with Season 3 on USA in its new timeslot at 9pm (8pm Central) on Thursdays!

One of my favorite series continues just where Season 2 left off, but in case you haven't watched them yet, I won't spoil it here, so catch up with the DVD's. Don't have them yet? Win them in a prize pack!

- All you have to do is figure out, without using the show Burn Notice, what the least degrees of separation is between John Mahoney (who was in the season 2 finale) and the show's star Jeffrey Donovan. Outline all the steps (using TV and Films and the actors in connection) and the person with the least amount of steps wins. Of course, in this age of imdb, I'll probably get a few similar ones or equal numbers. In that case, I will draw from all those who tie for the best solution. If you are using a TV show, the two actors connecting must have been in the same episode (so using an actor who started on a show after the other one left does not count, unless they crossed over).

- Email me at tapeworthycontest at gmail dot com with your solution.

- Contest closes at 11:59pm PST on Thursday June 18th 2009. So you'll have plenty of time to figure it out.

- Please subject the email: BURN NOTICE CONTEST and please include your name, email and City and State or Province,

- Contest is open to residents of Canada and the USA.

- Only one winner will be chosen.
I will ask for further details if you are the winner. Only the one winner will be contacted.

The deets:
Burn Notice is back at an all new time, 9pm/8c! Season 3 picks up right where season 2 left off with Michael swimming in the Atlantic. Michael emerges from the water free from interference by the organization that burned him. He's not under their protection, either, and is under investigation by the police. He gets out of prison with help from his old friend, who has a job for him: extraditing a thug who's displacing landowners in a Latin American country. Join fans on the official site www.burnnotice.usanetwork.com and on Facebook www.facebook.com/BurnNotice .

Enter To Win A Burn Notice Tote Bag filled with:

-Burn Notice Season 1 DVD
-Burn Notice Season 2 DVD
-Burn Notice Frisbee
-Burn Notice Suntan Lotion Pack
-Burn Notice t-shirt
-Burn Notice Novel
Value is $125 courtesy of USA Network

Best Duos

Scooter rounded up some of the TV bloggers for a Best Duos on TV list (as a sequel to last years Best Character list). It could be any duo from any show with new episodes since last June 2008. Just any duo that sparks up the screen, whether it be friends, enemies, lovers, family, anything. And if looking back at last year's single character list and this years duo list, it's that we bloggers really do love our Friday Night Lights. Plus, the buzz on The Big Bang Theory is really picking up this year.

Here was the compiled list of the Top 25 Favorite Duos, along with my own Top 10 picks that I submitted at the end of the post:

1. Coach Eric and Tammy Taylor (Friday Night Lights)
2. Liz Lemon and Jack Donagy (30 Rock)
3. Sheldon Cooper Ph.D. and Penny (The Big Bang Theory)
4. Jim Halpert and Dwight Shrute (The Office)
5. Patty Hewes and Ellen Parsons (Damages)
6. Dr. Temperance “Bones” Brennan and Special Agent Seeley Booth (Bones)
7. Emerson Cod and Olive Snook (Pushing Daisies)
8. Blair Waldolf and Chuck Bass (Gossip Girl)
9. Shawn Spencer and Burton “Gus” Guster (Psych)
10. Chuck Bartowski and Special Agent Sarah Walker (Chuck)
11. Sam and Dean Winchester (Supernatural)
12. Marc St. James and Amanda Tannen (Ugly Betty)
13. Barney Stinson and Ted Mosbey (How I Met Your Mother)
14. Bill Adama and Laura Roslin (Battlestar Gallactica)
15. Landry Clark and Tyra Colette (Friday Night Lights)
16. Ben Linus and John Locke (Lost)
17. John “J.D.” Dorian M.D. and Dr. Christopher Turk (Scrubs)
18. Sookie Stackhouse and Bill Compton (True Blood)
19. Jeff Patel and Lester Barnes aka Jeffster (Chuck)
20. James “Sawyer” Ford and Juliet Burke (Lost)
21. Homer and Marge Simpson (The Simpsons)
22. Bill Adma and Saul Tigh (Battestar Galactica)
23. Richard Cypher and Kahlan Amnell (Legend of the Seeker)
24. Earl and Randy Hickey (My Name Is Earl)
25. Michael Westen and Fiona Glenanne (Burn Notice)

Submitted by Voters: Dan, Ducky, Kath, Matt, Sandie, Scooter McGavin, TVFan, Vance

And here's my list that I submitted, though I must say now that I've seen the results, I'm so ashamed of myself for completely forgetting about Pushing Daisies. I also had a few on my list that I was highly considering but at the last moment, switched off for other picks.

1. Tami and Coach Eric Taylor - Friday Night Lights
2. Ben and Locke - Lost
3. Liz Lemon and Jack Donaghy - 30 Rock
4. Blair Waldorf and Chuck Bass - Gossip Girl
5. Penny and Sheldon - The Big Bang Theory
6. Bones and Booth - Bones
7. Tyra and Landry - Friday Night Lights
8. Amanda and Marc - Ugly Betty
9. Dean and Sam Winchester - Supernatural
10. Megan Smith and Charlie Hogan - Privileged

I had also highly considered: Marshall and Barney (How I Met Your Mother), Michael Westen and Fiona (Burn Notice), Sawyer and Juliet (Lost), Cappie and Casey (Greek), Chuck and Sarah (Chuck), really any pairing on Friday Night Lights would have worked, and I seriously had to withold myself in picking a top 10 solely from this show alone.

And I should have also considered: Earl and Randy (My Name Is Earl), Any pairing from Pushing Daisies.

I also considered those from The Office but deemed it worked best in ensemble moments (and I got irritated by Michael and Dwight this season, which was my initial duo to pick)

A Canadian Giving Thanks - Friday Night Lights, Ugly Betty, The Office, Privileged, Burn Notice, Greek and a LOT More!

It's Canadian Thanksgiving and while I have my usual things to thank for (family, great friends, fabulous life on a measly budget and you READERS! WOW, I still can't believe people (who are not my friends that I'm forcing to check my blog) are actually reading this! Thank you whoever you are! Thank you person from Clackamas, Oregon whoever you are! Strangely, I've actually BEEN to Clackamas County and what a gorgeous place!)), here's some of the things I'm thankful for on television.

Friday Night Lights - I Know You When - Ep. 301 - Season Premiere, Tami Knows Best - Ep. 302

Despite it being only on DirecTV until NBC airs it in 2009, Thank You anyways for having a new season of Friday Night Lights so that its out there... ahem...and for being one of the most BEAUTIFUL shows EVER (and I don't mean that on surface value (although yes, everything and everyone is real pretty too) but in a soul enriching way). Season 3 has so far been a return to Season 1 PERFECTION.

Thank you for the teary-moments of the week. The show still gets me every time. When Tyra asks for Tami's help in the Season Premiere, and when Matty is to become the help in Ep. 302.

Thank you for still having Gaius Charles returning as Brian "Smash" Williams if only to continue his story post-Panthers. Thank you for Eric still having faith in him.

Thank you for Adrianne Palicki who turned a one-note Tyra from the pilot into one of the most fascinating underdogs on television.

Thank you for the heartbreaking storyline of Matt Saracen taking care of his grandma and the his surprise visit this week. Not to mention his smile when Julie and Matty play nice again.

Thank you for making Tami Taylor the new principal of Dillon High and causing trouble right from the start when she decides to re-allocate the funds Buddy rounded up for a new Jumbotron towards academics.

Thank you for scenes with Landry and Matt again, for Tim Riggins just being on screen (and bonus points for Lyla pushing for his future) and thank you for Eric and Tami Taylor, the greatest parentals on TV.

Ugly Betty - Filing For The Enemy - Ep. 302, Crimes of Fashion - Ep. 303

Thank you for this:

Thank you for Vanessa Williams' Emmy-worthy performance as Wilhelmina, who has out-bitched them all this season, whilst still showing a tiny bit of her Gucci-black heart when Christina was broken.

Despite never really knowing what to do with Rebecca Romijn and throwing her to the fashion dogs by making her guilty of pushing Christina, Thank You for the nice twist of making her Daniel Jr.'s actual father. I did NOT see THAT one coming!

The Office - Business Ethics - Ep. 502

Thank You for Oscar nominee Amy Ryan having enough confidence for turning to TV post nomination and willing to go up against Michael at The Office.

Thank You for Meredith's lack of business ethics. How is it wrong to have sex for a discount and steaks? Doesn't that help Dundler Mifflin? Isn't it win win for everyone?

Thank You for the return of great episodes worthy of Season 2 greatness.

Survivor: Gabon - She Obviously Is Post-Op! - Ep. 1702, It Was Like Christmas Morning! - Ep. 1703

Thank You for now having the three hottest guys, Marcus, Charlie and Dan on the same team now. Thank You for Charlie's continuing crush on Marcus and the possibly train-wreck/cute bond to come.

Thank You for making it so easy to hate on Ken and co. Seriously, stupidest moves EVER.

Grey's Anatomy - Dream a Little Dream of Me: Part 2 - Ep. 502, Here Comes the Flood - Ep. 503

Thank you for being good again.

Thank you for mostly shutting up Meredith, despite finding a new patient to listen to all her whining.

Privileged - All About the Power Position - Ep. 104, All About Friends and Family - Ep. 105

Thank You for being the Best New Show of the season.

Thank you for bringing JoAnna Garcia and Michael Cassidy back to TV.

Thank you for making Lucy Hale actually likable and a complete opposite from her Bionic Woman days.

So You Think You Can Dance Canada

Thank You for whoever is sticking the videos on youtube so that people can watch the Top 20 dances online. (And Thank You Miles, Romina, Allie, Danny, Lisa, Francis, Lara, Nico, Arassay, Izaak, Vincent for a great first week!)

Burn Notice - Breaking and Entering, Turn and Burn, Trust Me, Comrades, Scatter Point, Bad Blood, Rough Seas, Double Booked, Good Soldier - Eps. 201-209

Thank You for renewing the show for Season 3.

Thank You for Jeffrey Donovan as Michael Westen and his hilarious facial expressions. Thank you for the moment Michael had to pretend to be a lab geek.

Thank You for another great season (with still more to come!) with more great individual cases as the over-arching story slowly builds little by little.

More on Greek, Grey's Anatomy, The Amazing Race, Brothers & Sisters, How I Met Your Mother, The Big Bang Theory, Worst Week, Chuck, Project Runway and Pushing Daisies.

Greek - Pledge Allegiance - Ep. 205

Thank You for Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants Greek guy (Michael Rady) for being on Greek. And getting his "nerd" Max to date Casey.

Thank You for actually writing Calvin and Michael's relationship in a serious light. And making their relationship foibles realistic, messy and touching.

Heroes

Thank You for having other people finally realizing it's totally sucking so that I don't have to force myself to follow the damn show anymore, thinking I'm missing out on anything good. Cause I'm not.

The Amazing Race - Do You Like American Candy? - Ep. 1302

Thank You for Nick being so cute AND being a nice guy (so far though I haven't watched last nights episode yet).

Desperate Housewives - We're So Happy You're So Happy - Ep. 502

Thank You for being funny and making us care again.

Brothers & Sisters - Book Burning - Ep. 302

Thank You for ridiculous and silly premises that somehow gather the Walkers together again into one room, and always with alcohol involved.

Chuck - Chuck versus the Seduction - Ep. 202

Thank You for bringing the show back despite that very few people are watching it. I am and I'm loving it still. Though less of Morgan still please.

Pushing Daisies - Circus, Circus - Ep. 202

Thank You for Ned and Chuck and Aunt Lily and Aunt Vivian and Emerson and Olive.

Thank You for some of the greatest dialogue and strangest stories around.

Thank You for casting a second cast member from Notes from the Underbelly Rachael Harris this season.

The Big Bang Theory - The Codpiece Topology - Ep. 201 - The Barbarian Sublimation - Ep. 202

Thank You for pairing up Jim Parson's Sheldon with Kaley Cuoco's Penny in the oddest and most surprisingly funny odd couples around. And not actually making them a couple.

How I Met Your Mother - I Heart NJ - Ep. 403

Thank You for bringing Sarah Chalke back.

Thank You for the frank discussion between the burbs vs the city. Even though I grew up in the burbs but love the city, I appreciated Stella and Marshall's thoughts.

Thank You for the nice twist on Robin's career (and the quick reaction shot from Barney).

Worst Week - The Bird - Ep. 102, The Monitor - Ep. 103

Thank You for casting Kyle Bornheimer who makes the whole premise actually work.

Project Runway - Season 5

Thank You for keeping Leanne in the finals. Thank You for keeping Kato (even though I didn't like the wedding dress either).

Thank You for keeping things interesting by having Kenley still in the race, because frankly, I thought Jerrell's stuff is sometimes FUGLY. Not always, but at least as much as Kenley's, if not more.

Best of TV - The 2007 - 2008 TV Season

With the upcoming Emmy Award announcements coming Thursday morning (July 17th), and the fact they get it wrong a LOT, here is (finally) my Top 20 list for the Best of Television for the 2007-2008 TV Season which this year I'm encapsulating from the summer of 2007 to June of 2008. (With the ranking from the three previous lists (Best of TV 2007, Best of TV - Fall 2006/Winter 2007 Season, and Best of TV 2006) in parenthesis.)

Best of Television - Summer, Fall 2007/Winter 2008 TV Season:

1. Lost - ABC - (4, 2, 6) Has totally found its way again and boy is it amazing!

2. Pushing Daisies - ABC - (2, New) Marvelously odd and romantic with a twisted deadly sense of humour all against bright and luscious colours.

3. Friday Night Lights - NBC - (1, 1, 3) An imperfect season that takes a close look at the imperfect lives of the people of Dillon, Texas as the real human dramas surrounding the regular daily routines in this small town sucks us in with its emotional attachment.

4. 30 Rock - NBC - (5, 10, Not Ranked) A rock solid comedy that is beyond bizarre and quirky.

5. Mad Men - AMC - (10, New) Seductively sleek in its fascinating look at the men who ran Manhattan in the 60's, and the women who stood behind them.

6. Weeds - Showtime - (6, 7, 8) Mary Louise Parker. Enough said.

7. Burn Notice - USA - (New) Jeffrey Donovan. Enough said.

8. So You Think You Can Dance - FOX - (11, Not Eligible, 16) Yes, we think they can dance!

9. Ugly Betty - ABC - (3, 4, 9) It may have faltered post writers strike but the first 2/3rds of the second season was bang on hilarious and ridiculous in its plotting.

10. Damages - F/X - (New) At times it may have repeated itself a little too often to get the confusing point across but when it did, it was gaspworthy.

11. Aliens in America - The CW - (9, New) Soft on the outside, biting and sharp on the inside.

12. Chuck - NBC - (9, New) A fun spy show with a heart of gold.

13. Project Runway / Project Runway Canada - Bravo/Slice Canada - (14, 13, 14/ 14, New) I'm not sure who is more fierce, Christian Siriano or Iman.

14. The Office - NBC - (10, 2, 2) Faltered a LOT but redeemed itself with a stellar finale that redeemed some of the previous season.

15. Bones - FOX - (15, 14, 20) I still wish the ending was flushed out more but until the twist end, the show made a procedural funny, romantic and humane.

16. How I Met Your Mother - CBS - (12, 6, 10) It had a hot and cold season but when it was hot, the show was HOT!

17. Gossip Girl/ Greek - The CW/abcFamily - (18, New/ New) Young people flirting, flirting and flirting. And other things young horny attractive people do. Addictively watchable and smarter than their glossy sheen let them on to be (not smart. Just smarter...).

18. Desperate Housewives/ House - ABC/FOX - (20, Not Ranked) Home is where the heart is and both these shows rebounded with stellar seasons that got to the emotional truths (with a lot of sarcasm along the way).

19. Brothers & Sisters/ Grey's Anatomy/ Men In Trees - ABC - (13, 9, 18/ Not Ranked, 18, 4/19, 16, Not Ranked) The large ensemble dramedies made for addictively fluff TV.

20. Entourage - HBO - (16, Not Eligible, 15) Always a good time hanging with the boys, no matter how stupid it could get.

Always A Bridesmaid, Shows that are consistently good that never get its due respects: The New Adventures of Old Christine, Everybody Hates Chris, My Boys, The Big Bang Theory, Corner Gas, Degrassi: TNG, Top Chef, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Supernatural, Eli Stone

Reality Shows That I Still Watch Because Like the Mafia, They Suck Me Back In Everytime: The Amazing Race, Survivor, American Idol

Huge Disappointments: Heroes, Bionic Woman, Big Brother, Lipstick Jungle, Private Practice, Welcome to the Captain, Big Shots, Life

Not As Bad As You Think They Were. For Real: Carpoolers, Back To You, Samantha Who?, My Name Is Earl, The Return of Jezebel James, Miss/Guided

Should have been better than it was, though it was showing some signs of life by the end: Reaper, Cashmere Mafia, Dirty Sexy Money, Journeyman

Yah Yah, Shows That Are Still On My List That I Know I Must See and Catch Up With To Join The Rest of the Club: Battlestar Galactica, Dexter, The Wire

Shows I Just Didn't Get, That I Just Don't See Why They Have Cult Hits: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, Moonlight

Shows I'm Glad I Gave Up In Previous Seasons (Finally!): ER, Prison Break, Law & Order, Law & Order: CI, CSI

Shows I Gave Up But I'll Occasionally Watch And Realize That They Are Still Quite Good: Law & Order: SVU, Cold Case, Without A Trace
