SYTYCDC4 - The Change-Up

So You Think You Can Dance Canada - Season 4 - Top 20 Results, Top 18 Performances and Results, Top 16 Performances - Ep. 409-412
Judges (Top 20): Jean-Marc Généreux, Tré Armstrong, Rex Harrington, Mary Murphy
Judges (Top 18): Jean-Marc Généreux, Tré Armstrong, Nico Archambault, Luther Brown, Mary Murphy
Judges (Top 16): Jean-Marc Généreux, Tré Armstrong, Sergio Trujillo, Dan Karaty

I was only away for 10 days but apparently I missed a lot. And coming back from vacation, to be honest, I forgot who some of the dancers were. Add to the confusion, the producers thought it was a good idea to switch up the pairings ALREADY during the Top 18 (and Top 16 again). Just as the US version switches up pairings and adds the All-Stars.

Anyways, I typed up this post and then Blogger somehow messed up and I lost half my comments below so I'm retyping an abridged version, but you'll get the gist.

Top 20 Group Dance
Style: Bollywood
Choreographed by: Longinus Fernandes
Song: "Haddipa - Pritam & Mika Singh

Top 20 - Results

Bottom 3:
Carlena and Boneless
Denitsa and JP
Lauren and Rodrigo

With Lauren and Rodrigo being cut.

Top 18 - Performances

Jordan Clark and Christian Millette
Style: Paso Doble
Choreographed by: Natali Rexnik and Francois LaFreniere
Song: "Lacrimosa Dominae - Serge Colbert and "Firebender" - Jeffrey Fayman, Yoav Goren Immediate Music
Grade - Dance: A
Grade - Girl: A
Grade - Boy: A

Amazing Amazing Amazing. Such power. In the music, in the dance, in Christian's body and presence, in Jordan's red mane and her confidence. Amazing.

Here's the video of Jordan and Christian's Paso Doble:

Denitsa Ikonomova and Matt Marr
Style: Contemporary
Choreographed by: Sabrina Matthews
Song: "Can't Breathe - Fefe Dobson
Grade - Dance: A
Grade - Girl: A
Grade - Boy: A

I love Matt but he hasn't stepped up like I thought he would, but I guess he was waiting for this routine. Love the song, so maybe that's why I loved this so much, but I thought Sabrina Matthews did a great routine to this that was fresh and exciting.

Denitsa totally surprised by killing this routine. Yay Denitsa!

Here's the video of Denitsa and Matt's Contemporary:

Carlena Britch and Kevin Howe
Style: Hip-Hop
Choreographed by: Sho-Tyme
Song: "Clear! - Kardinal Official
Grade - Dance: A-
Grade - Girl: A
Grade - Boy: A-

So hard hitting. Other than Kevin's ridiculous hairdo, he looked great. He didn't hit it as hard as Carlena but still did a pretty convincing job and much better than previous weeks.

Here's the video of Carlena and Kevin's Hip-Hop:

Lindsay Leuschner and Shane Simpson
Style: Disco
Choreographed by: Melissa Williams
Song: "Shake Your Groove Thing - Peaches & Herb
Grade - Dance: A-
Grade - Girl: A
Grade - Boy: A

I never think of Lindsay or Shane as frontrunners and I'm not sure why. They are always excellent, and with Disco, they don't disappoint. Again.

Here's the video of Lindsay and Shane's Disco:

Geisha Chin and Adam LoPapa
Style: Jazz
Choreographed by: Blake McGrath
Song: "Who's That Chick? - David Guetta feat. Rihanna
Grade - Dance: C
Grade - Girl: B+
Grade - Boy: B+

I did not love the routine. The dancing steps weren't great and the concept should have been cute but seemed full of gimmicks. I did think Adam and Geisha danced it quite well, for what they were given.

Here's the video of Geisha and Adam's Jazz:

Yuliya Zavadska and François Pruneau
Style: Mambo
Choreographed by: Gustavo Vargas
Song: "Mambo Gozon - Tito Puente
Grade - Dance: B
Grade - Girl: B+
Grade - Boy: B+

I thought the lifts were shaky and while they danced the moves, they didn't sizzle together. The judges thought differently and loved it.

Here's the video of Yuliya and François' Mambo:

Shelaina Anderson and JP Dubé
Style: Bollywood
Choreographed by: Longinus Fernandes
Song: "Baawre" - from Luck By Chance
Grade - Dance: A
Grade - Girl: A
Grade - Boy: A-

Always fun to watch no matter what. But it was intricate and JP and Shelaina got it all down, and were extremely synchronized. Shelaina had that extra glow that gave her the edge but JP really stepped up this week.

Here's the video of Shelaina and JP's Bollywood:

Teya Wild and Dwayne “Boneless” Gulston
Style: Krumping
Choreographed by: Lil C
Song: "Get Krazy - Buckmouth
Grade - Dance: A-
Grade - Girl: A-
Grade - Boy: B+

I thought Teya hit it harder than Boneless, but both exuded the attitude needed for Krumping. Nicely done.

Here's the video of Teya and Boneless' Krumping:

Melissa Mitro and Joey Arrigo
Style: Contemporary
Choreographed by: Mandy Moore
Song: "I Wanna Dance With Somebody - This Side Project
Grade - Dance: A
Grade - Girl: A
Grade - Boy: A

Just lovely. So lovely. Love Joey. Forget who Melissa is but then remember she's always great. Another dancer, like Lindsay and Shane, thatn I really need to keep remembering.

Here's the video of Melissa and Joey's Contemporary:

Top 18 Group Dance
Style: Tango/Musical Theatre
Choreographed by: Sergio Trujillo
Song: "El Tango de Roxanne - Ewan McGregor, Jacek Koman & José Feliciano and "No Pregunto Cuantons Son" - Bajofondo

Results
Bottom 3 were: Geisha and Adam
Yuliya and Francois
Teya and Boneless

with Teya and Boneless ultimately being cut.

Lindsay Leuschner and François Pruneau
Style: Hip-Hop
Choreographed by: Luther Brown
Song: "Massive Attack - Nicki Minaj feat. Sean Garrett
Grade - Dance: B+
Grade - Girl: B+
Grade - Boy: B+

A slower hip-hop which probably helped these two non-hip-hoppers make it look good and credible. Not an easier one, as Dan Karaty mentions, but more smooth. Could have popped a bit more, but at least it didn't look like "white folks doing hip-hop" dancing.

Here's the video of Lindsay and François' Hip-Hop:

Jordan Clark and Shane Simpson
Style: Contemporary
Choreographed by: Nico Archambault & Wynn Holmes
Song: "Wake Up Alone - Amy Winehouse
Grade - Dance: B
Grade - Girl: A
Grade - Boy: A

It's an interesting that they noted the timing of using Amy Winehouse music in this piece, giving it an added layer to it.

Enjoyable piece although I didn't think the choreography itself was anything spectacular (love Nico but eh, it was okay), but Jordan and Shane are such great dancers that they made it look beautiful. Shane has such a great spirit in his strong movements, and Jordan,... Jordan is simply a star, and to me, probably the front runner for the season.

Here's the video of Jordan and Shane's Contemporary:

Yuliya Zavadska and Matt Marr
Style: Quickstep
Choreographed by: Melanie LaPatin and Tony Meredith
Song: "Can't Touch It - Ricki Lee
Grade - Dance: B
Grade - Girl: B+
Grade - Boy: B-

As Dan Karaty says, in previous seasons, this might have been "good", but the bar is high and this doesn't quite reach it. Not a disaster of any sort, but definitely could have been quicker and snappier.

Here's the video of Yuliya and Matt's Quickstep:

Melissa Mitro and Christian Millette
Style: Tango
Choreographed by: Melanie LaPatin and Tony Meredith
Song: "La Bohemia - Electro Dub Tango
Grade - Dance: A-
Grade - Girl: A
Grade - Boy: A

I keep forgetting who Melissa is but then remember that she's excellent on the dancefloor everytime.
Christian is so hot. Thank you costume dept. yet again for giving us an open shirt. I loved that Melanie spritzed her breathe before practicing with Christian. Seriously.

To be honest, I'm not really sure how they actually danced it because I was watching the TWO of them, in their own moment.

Here's the video of Melissa and Christian's Tango:

Geisha Chin and JP Dubé
Style: House
Choreographed by: Sho-Tyme
Song: "What I Need - Crystal Waters
Grade - Dance: B+
Grade - Girl: B+
Grade - Boy: B+

Man, Dan Karaty is always so spot on with his comments (or at least, he says what I'm about to say). He, like I, think that they did a great job with the House moves, which has nothing flashy to help disguise faults.

Here's the video of Geisha and JP's House:

Shelaina Anderson and Kevin Howe
Style: Contemporary
Choreographed by: Sabrina Matthews
Song: "Rolling in the Deep" - Adele
Grade - Dance: A
Grade - Girl: A
Grade - Boy: A-

Shelaina is so great, and probably just on Jordan's heels as the best of the bunch, but it's nice to finally see Kevin doing a great job and elevated to Shelaina's excellence. This is definitely Kevin's best week yet.

Here's the video of Shelaina and Kevin's Contemporary:

Denitsa Ikonomova and Joey Arrigo
Style: Salsa
Choreographed by: Gustavo Vargas
Song: "Mirame -
Grade - Dance: B-
Grade - Girl: A-
Grade - Boy: B+

Loved the dancing, not the dance so much. I thought Joey did great considering this is far from his genre, and that he partnered well and put in an extra spiciness to his steps to keep up with Denitsa.

The judges loved Denitsa but did note that Joey wasn't as good, and not as good as he usually is, but he's still probably the strongest male dancer from a list of very strong male dancers. He looked a little deflated by the end, and I kinda want to give him a big hug.

Here's the video of Denitsa and Joey's Salsa:

Carlena Britch and Adam LoPapa
Style: Theatre
Choreographed by: Sean Cheesman
Song: "Kiss of the Spider Woman - from Kiss of the Spider Woman OBC Chita Rivera
Grade - Dance: A-
Grade - Girl: B+
Grade - Boy: A-

Love Adam. I thought there was a moment that almost devolved into a hot mess but Adam propped up Carlena and they went back on track. As Sergio mentions, it was a great routine that switched up from the original musical story, and it gave Carlena and Adam great moments to shine. It was also nice to see Carlena finally get a non-street dancing style. About time.

Here's the video of Carlena and Adam's Theatre:
