SYTYCDC3 - One
So You Think You Can Dance Canada - Season 3 - Finale - Eps. 324
Judges: Jean-Marc Généreux, Tré Armstrong, Blake McGrath, Luther Brown, Mary Murphy, Mia Michaels, Sergio Trujillo, Rex Harrington
Final four.
Here was My Final Ranking:
1. Denys
2. Amanda
3. Jeff
4. Janick
My Prediction:
1st: Jeff
2nd: Amanda
3rd: Denys
4th: Janick
But before we got the results, we get 2 hours of filler! With a reminder of the best dances of the season with the many great dancers (many who were cut too early), and the yammering by judges and hosts as a reminder of why our Canadian version is turning off a lot of people.
Top 21 Group Dance
Choreographed by: Sergio Trujillo
Song: "Flashdance What A Feeling" -
Grade: A
Nice to see Hani, Julia, Jera, Kirsten, Jesse again. All who were cut too early. And miss Charlene, Jonathan and Mackenzie.
And then they showed the judges picks of the season:
Amanda Cleghorn and Denys Drozdyuk
Style: Salsa
Choreographed by: Gustavo Vargas
Song: "I Love Salsa" - N'Klabe
From: Top 4 - Week 9
Here's the video of Amanda and Denys' Salsa (via CTV):
Nathalie Heath and Mackenzie Green
Style: Hip-Hop
Choreographed by: Sho-Tyme
Song: "All I Do Is Win" - DJ Khaled feat. T-Pain, Ludacris, Snoop Dogg & Rick Ross
From: Top 20 - Week 2
This is when my love for Mackenzie was cemented and that he wasn't just a one week wonder.
Here's the video of Nathalie and Mackenzie's Hip-Hop (via CTV):
Kirsten Wicklund and Jera Wolfe
Style: Contemporary
Choreographed by: Mandy Moore
Song: "Fireflies" - Ron Pope
From: Top 22 - Week 1
My realization that this Jera ballet/hip-hop dancer was not a one-trick pony and could actually be amazing. Sad that he never really got a chance to fully show us everything he's got when he was cut too early. And Kirsten was just lovely and also cut too early.
Here's the video of Kirsten and Jera's Contemporary (via CTV):
Janick Arseneau and Shavar Blackwood
Style: African Jazz
Choreographed by: Sean Cheesman
Song: "Dances with Wood/Baba" - Mickey Hart, Zakir Hussain, Sikiru Adepoju & Giovanni Hidalgo
From: Top 22 - Week 1
This is where I fell in love with Janick. Unfortunately she hasn't quite lived up to that since, but yet here she is in the Final 4. I don't hate Janick, but I feel she should be around the Top 8-10 range.
Here's the video of Janick and Shavar's African Jazz (via CTV):
Charlene Hart and Jeff Mortensen
Style: Hustle
Choreographed by: Maria Torres
Song: "That's Where The Happy People Go" - The Trammps
From: Top 18 - Week 3
It was a great spin by Jeff, and a dance that fits perfectly with his super smiley personality, but I felt that Charlene could do no wrong in all her partnered dances and here's just another example of her consistency.
Here's the video of Charlene and Jeff's Disco (via CTV):
Danielle Gardner and Sebastian Mersch
Style: Theatre
Choreographed by: Sean Cheesman
Song: "No Good Deed" - Idina Menzel from Wicked (Original Broadway Cast)
From: Top 20 - Week 2
A perfect piece for the adorable Sebastian and Danielle. And while Danielle managed to mature as the weeks went on, Sebastian had a great quirkiness to his dance, but didn't grow quite as fast as the others, but he had a good run and still always adorable.
Here's the video of Danielle and Sebastian's Theatre (via CTV):
Nathalie Heath and Mackenzie Green
Style: Contemporary
Choreographed by: Blake McGrath
Song: "After Afterall" - William Fitzsimmons
From: Top 16 - Week 4
Mackenzie. Practically naked. Thank you Blake and wardrobe person. Thank you Mackenzie for dancing amazingly every week.
Nathalie, you're pretty hot yourself.
Here's the video of Nathalie and Mackenzie's Contemporary (via CTV):
Amanda Cleghorn and Jeff Mortensen
Style: Contemporary
Choreographed by: Sabrina Matthews
Song: "Nowhere to Stand" - k.d. lang
From: Top 4 - Week 9
Who would have thought it would take an abusive character to bring out the best dance out of the usually sunny Jeff.
Here's the video of Amanda and Jeff's Contemporary (via CTV):
Janick Arseneau and Mackenzie Green
Style: Hip-Hop
Choreographed by: Luther Brown
Song: "Put Your Hands Where My Eyes Could See" - Busta Rhymes
From: Top 8 - Week 8
Seriously, how much do I love Mackenzie? Remember, he's a white boy contemporary dancer. But he's so fly!
Here's the video of Janick and Mackenzie's Hip-Hop (via CTV):
Claudia Primeau and Edgar Gilbert-Reyes
Style: Mambo
Choreographed by: Gustavo Vargas
Song: "La Reina" - La Lupe
From: Top 16 - Week 4
Love me some Edgar.
Here's the video of Claudia and Edgar's Mambo (via CTV):
Francis Lafreniere (from Season 1, and who still looks so F%$ken hot) proposes to Claudia live on air. Is this a SYTYCD first?
Top 21 Group Dance
Choreographed by: Bill T. Jones
Style: Theatre
Song: "Zombie" - from Fela! (Original Broadway Cast Recording)
From: Top 22 Results - Week 1
Danielle Gardner and Denys Drozdyuk
Style: Contemporary
Choreographed by: Sabrina Matthews
Song: "Highway of Heroes" - The Trews
From: Top 8 - Week 8
Danielle is fantastic here (which means of course she was cut that week). Luckily Denys survived the round with his excellent foray into Contemporary.
Here's the video of Danielle and Denys' Contemporary (via CTV):
Amanda Cleghorn and Denys Drozdyuk
Style: Tango
Choreographed by: Tony Meredith and Melanie LaPatin
Song: "Grand Guginol" - Bajofondo
From: Top 22 - Week 1
And to think I thought Denys would be the first to be cut, only because Euro Ballroom guys never seem to make it past early rounds. So glad these two made it to the end!
Here's the video of Amanda and Denys' Tango (via CTV):
Top 12 Group Dance
Choreographed by: Mia Michaels
Style: Contemporary
Song: "Will I?" - from Rent (Original Broadway Cast Recording)
From: Top 12 Results - Week 6
My favorite piece from the season and probably one of my favorite dances EVER from this show.
New Dance:
Top 10 Group Dance
Choreographed by: Melissa Williams
Song: "Under Pressure" - Queen
Grade: A-
That was a cool group routine that utilized the Top 10 really well and had just enough unison movements that always make group routines look cool.
Top 4 Group Dance with Blake McGrath
Choreographed by: Mia Michaels
Song: "Relax" - Blake McGrath
Grade: B+
A little too much like Mia's Top 4 from Season 2 with "Sexy Back" but still fun. If not a little too much shameless plugging for Blake.
Though of the 4 dancers, the non-Contemporary dancer Denys stood out for me.
The four dancers interview each other but it's actually really cute seeing the four of them actually look like they get along. Also reminded me that both boys are Ukranian. And that Denys went to Juliard.
Amanda Cleghorn and Jeff Mortensen
Style: Contemporary
Choreographed by: Stacey Tookey
Song: "Dancing" - Elisa
From: Top 8 - Week 8
Here's the video of Amanda and Jeff's Contemporary (via CTV):
Janick Arseneau and Denys Drozdyuk
Style: Paso Doble
Choreographed by: Natalli Reznik and Francis Lafreniere
Song: "España Cañí" - Manhattan Pops Orchestra
From: Top 12 - Week 6
Denys. Rowr. He can tame me anyday.
Here's the video of Janick and Denys' Paso Doble (via CTV):
The Final Results
4th: Janick Arseneau
3rd: Jeff Mortensen
2nd: Amanda Cleghorn
And the WINNER IS: Denys Drozdyuk
WOOHOO!!! In the exact order I wanted too! I mean, again, I would have loved to see a Mackenzie vs Denys showdown at the end and I thought Charlene was going to be here as well giving the boys and Amanda a run for their money but for what it is, Canada actually got it right at the end.
So at this point, we've been 3 for 3 seasons on getting the winner right! Whew!
I think it's the most we've ever seen Denys smile! I love that he usually looks so serious with that oddball serious sense of humour! Even his reaction to his win was adorable! And that he goes back into his serious look and humility. Love Denys!
I loved seeing all the guest judges hug him. They all really looked so pleased. Loved Mary scream at him. And that Rex and Sergio and Jean-Marc all seemed to want to grab Denys' head (who doesn't?) and Mia truly looked pleased and proud!
YAY DENYS!
