Missing Something? - A Behanding in Spokane - Play Review

A Behanding in Spokane - Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre - Broadway, New York, NY - ** (out of 5 stars)
Written by Martin McDonagh, Directed by John Crowley
Closes June 6th 2010

Yah, I just didn't get it. Sorry ModFab, but I just didn't get it. It closes in 4 days, so whatev.

Christopher Walken does his thing. Sam Rockwell is adorable in his attempted anti-adorable way.

Zoe Kazan (The Seagull) and Anthony Mackie (The Bacchae, The Hurt Locker) seemed to be in their own overacting comedy. Which I strangely appreciated at times.

But really, I loved Martin McDonagh's In Bruges but I had never seen any of his plays, so I was excited by the prospect. But maybe I'm missing something because I just didn't get it. I didn't think it was all that funny, nor did I think it was all that brilliant, in plot and in writing. It was just a lot of expletives being shouted one way or the other, and flying hands around a motel room that doesn't really logically make sense.

I liked the curtain and the pulley system for that. That was kinda cool! But maybe I'm just missing something. Definitely a hand cause I could barely give it applause unlike the rest of the audience.

You're not alone. I liked it a lot, so I'm actually in the minority. While it's definitely not on the same level as McDonagh's other plays (which I hope you get to see sometime), I was very entertained. I guess it just depends on if you find the material funny, because there isn't much depth to it.
