Musical Monday - Movie Trailer Edition

The best new musical from last year, Passing Strange is now a film! The movie that was filmed at the live performance of the musical on Broadway is directed by Spike Lee. Opens August 21st 2009. Will air on PBS next year.

And to be honest, the show is quite hard to explain, except to say it was a truly theatrical experience and even the clip, which gives a good indication of the show, probably is leading you all in the wrong direction to what the show actually achieves, and the whole thing is funnier and less pretentious than you would think.

And while Stew is terrific, the real discovery here is Daniel Breaker who has gone on to enliven the part of Donkey in the abysmal Shrek The Musical where Breaker's incredible talent is sadly being wasted while trying to save a show that is beyond saving.

Seems most watchworthy.

Woah, awesome! I've actually met Stew and Heidi - my buddy Russ played drums for the Berkley production of Passing, and I was thisclose to being the second keyboardist/junk man, but couldn't commit the time. Anyway, when I finally saw the show, I thought it was damn good.

I had no idea that a movie was in the works, and Spike Lee, at that! Very cool.
