Hairspray - The Nicest Kids In Town! - Movie Review

Hairspray
Directed by Adam Shankman

Yes, it's actually quite good. There are minor flaws and sometimes it looks flat but the cast is fantastic, choreography makes you want to dance, and the movie is a lot of fun. It may not be the best film of the year but it might just become my favorite.

I won't have time to expand on this mini-review(I have two more musicals to see on Saturday plus time to crack open Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows!) but the movie was great great fun! Considering I didn't really love the musical theatrical version (it was okay, not great), they sure turned it into one rousing movie!

And kudos to Niki Blonski who carries the entire film on her perky smile and dancing feet! Plus, who knew pretty faced James Marsden could dance and sing? And I mean, DANCE and SING. I was so impressed and surprised! Michelle Pfeiffer was great as the evil Velma Von Tussle, and Zac Efron actually improved on the usually weak Link. Elijah Kelley and Amanda Bynes are sweet together while Allison Janney was hilarious in her few scenes, and Christopher Walken found his most endearing role to date. John Travolta was actually cute as Edna Turnblatt. Britany Snow hit just the right wickedness as Tracy's nemesis. Queen Latifah, well, she plays it Queen Latifah style but it always seems to fit the role! Half the fun is watching this great cast play, dance and sing in this campy(but not too much) movie that never takes itself too seriously while dealing with a serious subject.

Hairspray = B+ or 8.5/10 though I reserve the right to change it to a higher grade. Maybe A- (9/10)
