So You Think You Can Dance - Dancing The Summer Heat

Top 14 Performance

Okay. I know it's only been 2 weeks since our last new episode of So You Think You Can Dance but it seems like it's been WAY TOO LONG. FOX, don't ever put SYTYCD on a midseason hiatus again. In the meantime, 2 new choreographers join us. Let's hope they are better than the disco botox lady.

The Judges tonight are: Nigel Lythgoe, Mary Murphy and Adam Shankman (director of the upcoming Hairspray movie musical and a former choreographer)!

Lacey Schwimmer and Kameron Bink - Hustle - choreographed by Maria Torres - "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" - Inner Life

Here is the video clip of Lacey and Kameron’s Hustle routine:

Kameron and Lacey Week 4
First off, are tuxedo t-shirts all the rage in LA? Why do reality show contestants keep wearing them? Kameron, you actually pull off the mohawkish red dyed hair and make it look cool. You should know better not to wear it during the intro.

So Lacey and Kameron, my favorite couple, does a great job with what they were given, but maybe I have such high expectations of this couple and show, that I kinda expected a faster routine. Kameron is pretty strong but Nigel is right, he's starting to be a good partner and not pulling the star wattage. Pasha will probable pull into my favorite male spot tonight. Still, it's a tight race.

Shauna Noland and Cedric Gardner - Mambo - choreographed by Alex DaSilva - "Flauta Y Timbal" - Tito Puente

Here is the video clip of Shauna and Cedric’s Mambo routine:

Cedric and Shauna Week 4
Wow. Alex was kinda harsh by bluntly saying that he needed to bring 3 assistants instead of his usual one, when he found out he had to teach Cedric. Harsh but hilarious. You know what else was harsh but hilarious? Cedric in that tanktop suspenders outfit. It just made him look like a jellyworm trying to dance. I feel bad for Shauna. She's one of my favorite girls in the competition but they have to be bottom 3 NOW so that we can get rid of Cedric. Cedric wasn't terrible and it was actually competent... if this was still week 1 one of the competition, but there are so many better dancers now that it's too little too late IMHO.

Anya Garnis and Danny Tidwell - Contemporary - choreographed by Tyce DiOrio - "Apologize" - One Republic

Here is the video clip of Anya and Danny’s Contemporary routine:

Danny and Anya Week 4
Um, Danny's secret obsession with sunglasses is NOT going to win him any more points, because his status is dropping fast. So it's good timing that they lucked out with Contemporary and reminded us why we thought he was the leader at the beginning. Anya was also one of my lowest ranking female, not so much because I dislike her or think she is bad but more by default in that I like the other girls more. She was excellent tonight though and I would want to keep her in after this week's performance. Whoa, LOVE Adam Shankman for calling out Danny's arrogance and not winning audiences hearts. Nigel disagrees but agrees there is a problem connecting with the audience. Love that it's being called out still and being debated.

Sara Von Gillern and Pasha Kovalev - West Coast Swing - choreographed by Benji Schwimmer with Heidi assisting- "The Rockafeller Shank" - Fatboy Slim

Here is the video clip of Sara and Pasha's West Coast Swing routine:

Pasha and Sara Week 4
LOVE Pasha's new hair style. It's so cute! I think this might have just paired up my new favourite individuals Sara and Pasha.

Benji! Heidi! Wait. Is that fair that another contestant’s brother is choreographing for a different team? Couldn’t he screw them up so that Lacey looks even better? I know. He would NEVER do that…but maybe a cousin would. I kid. I LOVE HEIDI! Still…

Okay, and that was DEFINITELY a routine choreographed by Benji. It was so FUNNY. Who knew dance could be that humorous? And Pasha and Sara are now a SPECTACULAR pairing. Each has such positive vibes that they feed off each other. I don't even know if they did it right but it sure felt FUN and FANTASTIC. Okay fine. Benji should come back to choreograph. He should also keep sporting those glances and that purple outfit. Somehow it actually works!

Sabra Johnson and Dominic Sandoval - Hip Hop - choreographed by Shane Sparks - "Make It Work " - Ne-Yo

Here is the video clip of Sabra and Dominic’s Hip Hop routine:

Dominic and Sabra Week 4
French accent? Hahaha... Oh Dominic... I know you're trying to seem grounded and nice.

Holy. I just love these two. That was a wicked routine. So simple at first glance, but when you broke it down, HOW'D THEY DO THAT? That handstand Sabra goes into and then Dominic joins? SO COOL. Like some moving sculpture. Again. I think these two often get overlooked when we make our favorites list but they have rocked their routines every week.

Jaimie Goodwin and Hok Konishi - Waltz - choreographed by Toni Redpath - "Angel" - Sarah McLachlin

Here is the video clip of Jaimie and Hok’s Jazz routine:

Hok and Jaimie Week 4
Jaimie sounds more bubbleheaded than I realised.

Okay, that routine was far better than I thought it was going to be. Hok and Jaimie were elegant and while there were a few catch up steps in between, I didn't notice most of the negatives that Nigel and Mary commented on.

Lauren Gottlieb and Neil Haskell - Jazz - choreographed by Wade Robson - "Night of the Dancing Flame" - Roisin Murphy

Here is the video clip of Lauren and Neil’s Jazz routine:

Neil and Lauren Week 4
Another Roisin Murphy song used! That was really quirky and weird and slightly disturbing routine and totally superb (well, it IS Wade). It's been such a good night that I figured Neil and Lauren would be bottom three but that was so cool and Neil finally proved why I've been touting him from the start. Lauren made me (almost) forget her terrible solo from the last results show and totally lived up to a Wade routine.

Wrap Up

Best Pairing of the Night - : Sara and Pasha just beating out Sabra and Dominic and Neil and Lauren. So fun. So fancy free. So friggin awesome. Love that these two look like they are having fun, look like they enjoy being there, and look like they are approachable (are you hearing this Danny?). If Sabra and Dominic were just slightly more together in the first 10 seconds of their routine, it would have at least tied Pasha and Sara. At this point though, these four MUST be in the Top 10. MUST. Neil and Lauren have had off weeks but this week showed us that they CAN dance!

Worst of the Night - Shauna and Cedric and really only because of Cedric. Again, it was pretty good routine but the competition is TIGHT this year and being pretty good is not enough anymore. Shauna rocked the routine but was brought down by her partner Cedric, who has overstayed his welcome by 3 weeks. I think all the girls were great but by the slightest of margins, I think Jaimie is the worst of the night and my guess for the girl who will be dropped, unless she pulls off an amazing solo and the others falter.

Prediction for Bottom Three: Cedric and Shauna, Jaimie and Hok, Danny and Anya

I loved Danny and Anya's routine and Pasha and Sara's the best.

I am ready for Jamie and Cedric to go home this week and Lauren and Hok next week. I sort of like Lacey and Cameron, but she is always mugging at the camera and it's annoying. Dominic and Sabra are the most likable.

Sabra and Dominic all the way. They were, once again, spectacular--with Lacey and Kameron on their heels. I thought Pasha and Sara were really bad, but the worst, obviously, was Cedric. Its a shame that the amazing Shauna has to dance with him.
I'm hoping they finally boot Cedric and Sara tomorrow.
And the show sure plays up the Lacey/Benji thing, how come they don't do the Travis/Danny thing?

I actually thought that Cedric did fairly well, much to my surprise (and chagrin - how would the dancers he cut out be doing now if he'd been booted when he should have?). It was Dominic who I think really didn't manage to shine well enough - whether due to choreography or his own dancing, I'm not sure, but he just didn't measure up to his partner. I put my own predictions/evaluations on fameorfamine.com; we'll see if I'm right or not.

Oh, and does it bother anyone else that when they do a hiphop routine with very little hiphop, it's "expanding the genre", but when they do it in a waltz, it's "just not good enough?"
