SYTYCD6 - 4gasms + 4gasms = 8gasms

So You Think You Can Dance - Top 8 Performance Night - Ep. 621
Judges: Nigel Lythgoe, Mary Murphy, Adam Shankman

It's the last week before the finale. (What! you say? Yes, just a reminder from what they announced a long time ago, but this season is going to end with a Final 6 Finale, mainly because it would run into Christmas week if they went to Final Four). So only one more major cut before the finals and with the remaining 8 dancers left, I'm not really sure who I would want to cut.

And after this week's performance, it really becomes a tight race.

Speaking of tight, there were a few performances this week that got me so excited, I may have yelled out Sally style.

Kathryn McCormick
&
Ryan Di Lello
Dance #1
Style: Disco
Choreographed by: Doriana Sanchez
Song: "Last Dance" - Donna Summer (Samantha Ronson remix)
Grade:A-

That was one of the lesser objectionably routines by Doriana (but if you want to see great Disco routines, they should hire Canadian Melissa Williams, esp. since Nigel is already importing down a lot of the other choreographers) and I thought Kathryn and Ryan looked so great doing it.

Ryan is just so HOT. Loved watching him do those disco moves in that shinny shirt. I'm with Adam on this. Ryan makes it work. And if it makes him look a little gay? I don't mind (finger in mouth).

And Kathryn is such the vision of loveliness. She's been such a contender for me since the beginning and while I think some of the other dancers have gained buzz or gotten more camera attention, I've been keeping watch and I still think Kathryn is one of the two best female dancers on this show. We still barely know who she really is, but who cares when she can dance like the way she does!

Here's the video of Kathryn and Ryan's Disco:

Mollee Gray
&
Jakob Karr
Dance #1
Style: Viennese Waltz
Choreographed by: Jason Gilkison
Song: "Ordinary Day" - Vanessa Carlton
Grade: A

What happened to Vanessa Carlton? I forgot how much I loved this song.

Jakob. Is pure heaven. I just can't get enough of him. I think I have mini orgasms when I watch him dance. And not only is he an amazing dancer with a fluidity even smoother than water, he always makes his partner look just as good. He's a great dancer himself, but he's a great partner too.

Mollee looks so much better and mature somehow here. Maybe it's the long yellow dress and her golden curls, but I thought she was amazing here and looked so fabulous next to Jakob.

The whole thing was just so dreamy.

Here's the video of Mollee and Jakob's Viennese Waltz:

Ellenore Scott
&
Legacy Perez
Dance #1
Style: Contemporary
Choreographed by: Travis Wall (with Kayla Radomski assisting)
Song: "Machine Gun" - Portishead
Grade: A+

Ellenore and Jakob were a perfect couple. Wait. Ellenore and Legacy are a perfect couple too. Last week I gave Ellenore and Jakob an A+. This week I gave Ellenore and Legacy an A+. Hmm... I wonder what the connection is here? Okay, so Ellenore gets partnered with Legacy and Jakob, who keep competing for my heart.

A heart that is already fully given over to Travis Wall since Season 2. Lord that boy makes me so proud.

Where do I start? That was Just AMAZING. The best of the season. A perfect unison of Ellenore's quirky moves and Legacy's astounding B-Boy flips and flops. When they connected, there was electricity, but when they had solo moments, it was just as bright.

That flip on the table where Legacy falls on top of Ellenore was just jawdropping. The whole routine was. They were so badass to each other. The make-up sex is going to be awesome!

Here's the video of Ellenore and Legacy's Contemporary:

Ashleigh Di Lello Rachel
&
Russell Ferguson
Dance #1
Style: Hip-Hop
Choreographed by: Shane Sparks
Song: "Too Much Booty 2" - Soundmaster T & Jah-Rista featuring Korveil (Bobby J Remix)
Grade: B+

Poor Russell, his partners keep getting injured. Poor partners, they keep getting injured with Russell. Hmm...

Kudos to Rachel, Shane's assistant for stepping in. I thought she was pretty great. I loved that she wasn't a skinny girl and she hit those beats hard, proving that you don't need to be a stick do dance well.

I thought Russell was great, but obviously, his connection with Rachel seemed a bit lacking, especially considering they only had less than a day to plan for this switch up.

And not to help, but I didn't think it was Shane's best routine either.

Here's the video of Rachel and Russell's Hip-Hop:

Kathryn McCormick
&
Ryan Di Lello
Dance #2
Style: Cha-Cha-Cha
Choreographed by: Jason Gilkison
Song: "Put Your Hands On Me" - Joss Stone
Grade: A

Hot-Hot-Hot. Wow.

Even before that ending with Ryan flipping Kathryn upside down and stopping there, it was a sizzling routine by Gilkison.

The precision and sharpness between the two dancers was just ON. I thought the connections between the two were tight, and this time, Kathryn wasn't lovely, she was smokin'. While Ryan and his chest were just delicious!

Can someone pass me a smoke now please?

Here's the video of Kathryn and Ryan's Cha-Cha-Cha:

Mollee Gray
&
Jakob Karr
Dance #2
Style: Broadway
Choreographed by: Joey Dowling
Song: "Easy Street" - from Annie (Samantha Ronson remix)
Grade: A-

After all that talk about sliding on the bench, I thought it looked a little awkward, but the rest was pretty great! Again, Jakob just looks so dapper and is so perfect for Broadway. I thought Mollee looked fabulous dancing alone but had a teensy bit of a flinch on her moments of connection with Jakob.

I wasn't crazy about the remix though.

Here's the video of Mollee and Jakob's Broadway:

Ellenore Scott
&
Legacy Perez
Dance #2
Style: Hip-Hop
Choreographed by: Napoleon and Tabitha D'umo
Song: "People Are Strange" - The Doors (District 78 remix)
Grade: B

That was weird and didn't really work and sadly I lay most of the blame here to NappyTabs. A few seasons back, a routine was already criticized for using masks and distancing the dancers from the audience. Yet here again is a near repeat of those masks and yet again, the dancers didn't seem to connect with each other or the audience.

There were some great moves with the great Legacy and Ellenore, and we know they can connect well based on their first dance, but this was just sort of okay, but it was mostly because the choreography tamped down the energies of Legacy and Ellenore.

Here's the video of Ellenore and Legacy's Hip-Hop:

Ashleigh Di Lello Alicia
&
Russell Ferguson
Dance #2
Style: Bollywood
Choreographed by: Nakul Dev Majahan
Song: "Spirit of Rangeela" - Rangeela
Grade: A

Again, Russell has to dance with a new last minute partner but since most of the Bollywood is danced side by side, there isn't as much of a connection issue and Russell just looked like he was having a ball with it. Russell looked SO natural doing Bollywood that it almost seemed like it was his own style.

So fun, but then again, when is Bollywood ever NOT fun?

Here's the video of Alicia and Russell's Bollywood:

Solos:

Ashleigh Di Lello
Song: None
Grade: N/A
Sadly, since Ashleigh is injured, she doesn't get to do her solo, but since next week is the finale, she still must survive the vote.

Jakob Karr
Song: "When You Say My Name" - Mario Spinetti
Grade: A-
He is JUST. SO. SMOOTH. Gawd, I think I just had another orgasm watching that.

Mollee Gray
Song: "Heartburn" - Alicia Keys
Grade: A-
I'm still not crazy about Mollee the person but she's had solid solo's and yet again, I thought she dances so beautifully when she's alone. (Kind of like Nathan too, which is maybe why their pairing didn't always work).

Legacy Perez
Song: "Fancy Footwork" - Chromeo
Grade: B+
A fun routine that made me laugh, with some great tricks, but as an overall piece, I thought he's had better.

Ellenore Scott
Song: "I Got the Feelin" - James Brown
Grade: B
I LOVE Ellenore solo's. They are always quirky and fun and full of style and full of technique and they always feel like a whole piece. This one did not. She tried but I didn't think it worked with the song. I get what she was trying but it didn't let her show her crazy amazing self.

Russell Ferguson
Song: "Holiday Buckness" - Tha J-Squad
Grade: A-
Another fun routine that made me laugh, and got us in the holiday spirit. So spirited and so much energy!

Kathryn McCormick
Song: "Shadowfeet" - Brooke Fraser
Grade: A
Simply beautiful and some crazy twists and moves and in an eloquent piece that worked perfectly with the music and felt substantial. I'm not even into girls and that excited me!

Ryan Di Lello
Song: "Din Da Da" - Kevin Aviance
Grade: A-
As always, it's always hard to make a ballroom solo looked whole and interesting so kudos to Ryan for throwing in a few tricks in between while giving it with gusto.

Best Female of the Night - Overall: Kathryn McCormick

Worst of the Night - Couple: Ellenore and Legacy's Hip-Hop and mainly because of NappyTabs
Worst Solo of the Night: Ashleigh Di Lello by default for not performing

Predictions:

Bottom Four: Kathryn, Ashleigh, Ryan, Russell
Should Go Home: Ashleigh and Russell
Going Home: Ashleigh and Ryan

If Ashleigh had danced, I'd probably lean for Mollee to go, and only because of those weak weeks she and Nathan had back then, while Ashleigh has stayed consistent so far. It's too bad she injured herself this week, but since the other three dancers danced so well this week, I just don't know if we should be cutting anybody other than Ashleigh. Before tonight, I would have thought Kathryn was in danger but after yet another amazing night, I hope she's safe.

Meanwhile, Russell was an early favorite of mine, but like Mollee, I only knock him down a bit because of a few weak weeks he had a while back. Based on tonight, all the guys danced so well that I don't really want to cut anybody, but if I had to let someone go now, it would be a difficult choice but Russell would be my choice, and partly in unfairness to him for having to partner with two brand new girls at the very last minute.

At this point, this is how I rank all the dancers (#position from last week in parenthesis):

1. Jakob (1)
2. Ellenore (2)
3. Legacy (3)
4. Kathryn (4)
5. Ryan (6)
6. Russell (8)
7. Ashleigh (7)
8. Mollee (9)

But I would say 1-4 are pretty much tied at this point.

This was a great show--good to great dancing all around, even from Mollee! and some super moments. It's so tough to predict who will go--I enjoyed the whole show, and wished it didn't have to be a competition. Legacy is my fave, but his phone gimmick in the solo will cut into the buzz from the great Travis routine, where he and Ellenore hit every musical beat. But this is the second hip-hop routine he's been given where the costume and concept smothered his talent. Jakob continues to perform brilliantly and is clearly favored to win by many--but can I say that the whole slide into "so you think contemporary is real dancing and bboying is just tricks" discourse of the judges has made me unreasonably prejudiced against all the contemporary dancers except Kathryn, and that's because she was such a good partner to Legacy. As a ballroom dancer, I suppose I should be rooting for Ryan and Ashleigh, but they just are not as good at ballroom as previous contestants, so it's hard for me to think of them as favorites, even though they have been great on the show as performers and partners. Russell was bucc! in all of his dancing, but having two unknown partners puts a lot of weight on his shoulders--it was distracting.

I totally agree with your top 4. The bottom for is harder. I have disliked Mollee for so long, her two beautiful dances with Jakob are not going to make me like her. Yes, they were great but I really think they were great because of Jakob.

I love Kathryn and don't think she gets the credit she deserves.

Jakob and Ellenore are brilliant each in their won way. Jokob should win but this whole America voting thing is a crap shoot!

oh, and those costumes they had Legacy and Ellenore in for the hip hop? Who picked those things? Why do they keep putting people in loose ugly home ec looking yuck? If they had been wearing skin tight anything that dance would have been 100% better.

I feel so lonely way out here in the minority - I LOVED the NappyTabs hip-hop routine for Legacy and Ellenore.
Okay, I'll admit that the bat wing sleeves on their shirts were a little distracting but I liked the idea of the masks and thought that Ellenore and Legacy made them work.
And unlike the judges I thought they hit the routine hard and were completely in synch.
What am I seeing that others aren't? I don't think it's my love for them that's blinding me.
What are others seeing that I can't?
