SYTYCD7 - Cut Up 2D/Step Up 3D

So You Think You Can Dance - Season 7 - Top 6 Redux Results Night - The Cut From 6 to 4 - Ep. 719
Judges: Nigel Lythgoe, Mia Michaels, Adam Shankman and Toni Redpath

Top 6 Group Dance with the All-Stars
Choreographed by: Mia Michaels
Song: "Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic" - Sting
Grade: B+

It's Allison in Wonderland! Gawd I love Allison!

So did Jose dance this time? He's been out at least 2 weeks... yes I think I saw him. Lauren wasn't there, though she is fine and out of the hopsital.

Wow. That was a Mia Michael's piece? I loved it but it was way more fun than I expect from her. Not perfect and some limp moments in between cool stuff but lots of fun, and kind of unexpected from Mia. It's like she's trying to channel Wade or something.

So I'm late watching the results because I went to a screening of Step Up 3D, produced by Adam Shankman. Um... I'll speak more about it below.

But more important things first. In one fell swoop, we're cutting 2 dancers tonight, leaving 2/3 of the dancers left.

My Predictions from the Top 6 Redux Performances:
Bottom Three: Jose, Robert and Billy.

Should Go Home: Adéchiké and Jose
Going Home: Jose and Billy.

The actual results were:
Jose is in the bottom 3.
Kent is safe. No kidding?
Billy is in the bottom 3. Which I sadly predicted.
Adéchiké is safe.
Robert is in the bottom 3 safe. OMG OMG OMG!!! I'm as pleasantly shocked as he is.
Lauren is saf... in the bottom 3. Whoa. Seriously. Who the f%&k is voting for Adéchiké? The French?

I don't think Adéchiké is a bad dancer, but I don't know anybody who really LOVES him and would vote for him. So how has he never been in the bottom 3? How big is his family/town and how many phones do they have?

According to @dizzyfeet: "The difference between first place and second place was 1.17% there's no guaranteed winner". So Kent and... please please please be Robert. Because it can't be Lauren which means it would be Adéchiké again?

The Experts:
Step Up 3D plug:
Dancers to the Music from the Step Up 3D Motion Picture Soundtrack
Song: "Already Taken" - Trey Songz
Song: "My Own Step (Theme from Step Up 3D" - Roscoe Dash & T-Pain feat. Fabo
Song: "This instant" - Sophia Fresh feat. T-Pain

Maybe I'm just getting picky but I thought some of the guys at the end of the "My Own Step" portion looked messy.

Um, I know that was supposed to blow us all away to want to see Step Up 3D but I way preferred Allison in Wonderland.

Ok, so if I have time, I'll try to post a longer review but while I adored Step Up and even Step Up 2 to a degree, Step Up 3D feels like a totally different entity. If the first movie is like SYTYCD, the 3D version is like America's Best Dance Crew. A show I kinda dug for a while and then got tired of fast, and that I've forgotten about again while I've returned back to SYTYCD.

Still, it was fun to see Twitch on the big screen. Legacy and Ashlee pop in and out. Joshua Allen has a hilarious part as a badass. Yah, um, no. Katee Shean and Ivan are supposedly in it too but I didn't see them.

And for Glee fans, Harry Shum Jr. (Mike Chang) appears (though too late into the movie) and like in Glee, has 1 line. Groan. When will he get a deserved bigger part?

Anyways, the dancing was alright, but to be honest, I found myself bored through some of it. Not a good sign for a dance movie. And seriously, I don't ask for much story and plot in a dance movie but does the dialogue have to be so bad? The main guy Rick Malambri is super hot but I noticed doesn't really dance that much in the movie, or emote much either (he seems like a great nice guy in real life but plays it as the nice guy in the movie which doesn't really make an underwhelming story very interesting).

And the 3D? Totally unnecessary and in fact, makes the dancing look cartoonish and animated and FAKE.

The Filler:
Christian TV performs "When She Turns 18". Don't know who he is but he's kinda cute. Though forgettable.

Allison "The Rocker" Iraheta performs "Don't Waste the Pretty". I love Allison but this song totally sucks.

Dance For Your Life:

Jose "Full Deck" Ruiz
Song: "Hot Music" - Soho
Grade: B+

Billy Bell
Song: "Szerencsetlen" - Venetian Snares
Grade: A
I love that he's putting some quirk into his solos but maintaining his beautiful lines.

Lauren Froderman
Song: "Let's Get It On" - Marvin Gaye
Grade: B+
Man she really likes the motown. After last night's great solo, I thought she went back to stripper territory.

The Cut:

So they must cut 2 dancers and while I thought Billy would have won Season 6 if he didn't have to pull out, he's sadly getting cut cause no way are they letting the last girl go. So, despite putting in 2 of some of the best routines of the entire season, Billy's being let go.

So Billy Bell and Jose "Full Deck" Ruiz are eliminated. (No big surprise for Jose. He should have been cut weeks ago, but 3 injuries in a row have saved him).

So there you go. Final four. And it's Adéchiké, Kent, Lauren and Robert. I'm 75% pleased.

I'm so tired of Kent.

I really must decry your persistent characterization of Lauren's solo work as "stripper"-ish. That kind of catty low-blow has no place in a critique that is intended to be taken seriously. You might (fairly) feel that her attempts to come off as sultry did not quite work, but to use such denigrating language to describe her efforts becomes you not. If someone were to describe Pasha as looking like a Chippendale or a porn star for dancing around so much without his shirt on, I wager you'd burst a blood vessel - and rightly so. Those kinds of comments are beneath anyone's dignity.

I hear your complaint, but this blog was never intended to be taken seriously. If you think Pasha looks like a Chippendale dancer, I'd probably laugh and then start day dreaming.
I just say what I feel and see and what things remind me off. I loved Lauren's solo from last week but I just find while she's a strong dancer, her solo's are weak.

That said, who said being a stripper is beneath anyone?

Sara said...

I've got no argument with your assessment of Lauren's solos being weak. I had the distinct impression that she was trying for sultry, but doesn't have the maturity to really pull it off quite yet. I would say that it neither rose nor descended to the level of stripper - which can be sultry as hell.

That said, in response to your last query, I think you imply that being a stripper is a lesser role by equating it twice with a lesser performance on the part of the dancer. The correlation is pretty clearly established, to my mind, though it is by no means explicit. However, I'm perfectly willing to accept that you didn't mean it that way. And I don't consider being a stripper to be beneath anyone, but I consider using stripper (or Chippendale or porn star) as a derogatory term to be beneath everyone.

Thanks for taking the time to reply. =]
