SYTYCDC3 - Defl8

So You Think You Can Dance Canada - Season 3 - Top 8 Performance and Results, The Cut from 8 to 4 - Eps. 321-322
Judges: Jean-Marc Généreux, Tré Armstrong, Sergio Trujillo, Rex Harrington

Top 8. And because of the original Top 22, CTV is actually a week behind and thus, the rush to cut half the dancers to make it in time for the finale.

Groan. Why can't they just extend by a week? Somehow CTV has already squeezed the show into their busy fall schedule. What else are they going to replace it with? Another CSI or Law & Order?

I feel bad for the dancers. To be unceremoniously cut and to share it with another dancer must suck. Especially after all their hard work. Can the show make us more annoyed then they already have? I'm curious to see what the numbers are, because I know a lot of fellow fans have been dropping the show because of the show itself (and not the dancers) and at this point, the dancers are the only thing keeping me on.

At least the guest judges of late have been great. This week, National Ballet of Canada's Rex Harrington is back, along with Broadway and Stratford Festival choreographer Sergio Trujillo (Next to Normal, Jersey Boys, Memphis, The Addams Family). Can next season's judging panel be Rex Harrington, Karen Kain, Sergio Trujillo and Stacey Tookey, with Dan Karaty guesting every once in a while?

Janick Arseneau and Mackenzie Green
Style: Hip-Hop
Choreographed by: Luther Brown
Song: "Put Your Hands Where My Eyes Could See" - Busta Rhymes
Grade - Dance: A-
Grade - Girl: A-
Grade - Boy: A

What can't Mackenzie do? White boy got down and smooth and was just sick. There's just something to his dancing, no matter what style, where his body and mind looks fully committed and gives it that extra charismatic oomph over others.

Janick was terrific and only docked her a point for tiny moments that just weren't as tight as Mackenzie.

Here's the video of Janick and Mackenzie's Hip-Hop (via CTV):

Danielle Gardner and Denys Drozdyuk
Style: Contemporary
Choreographed by: Sabrina Matthews
Song: "Highway of Heroes" - The Trews
Grade - Dance: A-
Grade - Girl: A
Grade - Boy: A-

That song was kinda hokey considering what the song was about.

Love Denys and I think he's always so amazing, but I think Sabrina didn't give Denys a lot to do but as Rex said, he was a great support for Danielle here and played the character to full depth. I wish his one kick was higher and straighter but Sabrina cleverly worked around his ballroom training.

Danielle was brilliant and mature and evoked all the emotions and moves needed for this ode to fallen soldiers and their wives.

Here's the video of Danielle and Denys' Contemporary (via CTV):

Amanda Cleghorn and Jeff Mortensen
Style: Contemporary
Choreographed by: Stacey Tookey
Song: "Dancing" - Elisa
Grade - Dance: A-
Grade - Girl: A
Grade - Boy: A-

I love how this song is now a shortcut for emotional pain.

Amanda was simply fantastic and was just breathtaking. Literally, she made me gasp for some air.

Jeff was terrific and his large moves look great, and he's a great support for Amanda. I noticed he stumbled momentarily while readjusting between moves, but other than that, it was great.

Here's the video of Amanda and Jeff's Contemporary (via CTV):

Nathalie Heath and Sebastian Mersch
Style: Cha-Cha-Cha
Choreographed by: Danny Arbour
Song: "Only Girl (In the World)" - Rihanna
Grade - Dance: A-
Grade - Girl: A-
Grade - Boy: B+

Nathalie looked fantastic in that dress (wait, Rex just said the exact same thing while I typed that...) but Sebastian, while impressive for a ballroom dance in the Top 20, is now not good enough for the Top 8.

Nathalie got all the moves down but as Tre mentioned, she just needs to connect a bit more with her partner.

Here's the video of Nathalie and Sebastan's Cha-Cha-Cha (via CTV):

Solos

Jeff Mortensen
Style: Contemporary
Song: "15 Step" - Radiohead
Grade: A-
Looked like he missed a beat that threw him off near the end but other than that, looked quite wonderful and fluid.

Nathalie Heath
Style: Contemporary
Song: "Butterflyz" - Alicia Keys
Grade: A-
Also seemed to momentarily stumble for a split second but other than that, also looked quite wonderful and fluid.

Amanda Cleghorn
Style: Jazz
Song: "Moan (Trentemøller Remix)" - Trentemøller
Grade: A
I almost felt like that would be a solo Mark Kanemura or Robert Roldan would have done, (good choice of music too) so I loved that Amanda did it.

Sebastian Mersch
Style: Contemporary
Song: "Your Ex-Lover is Dead" - Stars
Grade: B+
I love his style but I felt that was a little frenetic and desperate and that Sebastian still hasn't quite figured out the proper way to solo (then again, lots of dancers don't on this show).

Denys Drozdyuk
Style: Ballroom
Song: "Kaboom" - Ursulla
Grade: A
The only fault was that there was another shirt under the one he took off. What a fun and fantastic, yet quirky ballroom solo!

Janick Arseneau
Style: Contemporary
Song: "Myphilosophy" - Inner
Grade: B+
I really loved Janick at the start but I find she's has ups and downs and ups again but her solos haven't really moved forward in any way.

Danielle Gardner
Style: Contemporary
Song: "Bloodstone" - Amon Tobin
Grade: A
I thought that was really weird and intense (in a good way) for the smiley and bubbly Danielle.

Mackenzie Green
Style: Contemporary
Song: "Ghosts 'n' Stuff" - Deadmau5 feat. Rob Swire
Grade: A-
A little cheeseball especially for Mackenzie who usually does great solos, but still an amazing bundle of tricks and he always puts in all the passion he can into his dances.

Top 8 Group Dance
Choreographed by: Sean Cheesman
Style: Jazz
Song: "History Repeating" - Propellerheads feat. Shirley Bassey
Grade: A

Loved this. Loved the choreo and the concept, perfect song choice. Loved.

But it's really interesting to see all the dancers together and who stood out again, and it only reconfirmed Mackenzie, Denys, Danielle and Amanda for me (and Nathalie to a degree). They just had a snap that the others lacked. Jeff's good in the major moves but it's the inbetween moments where he's lacking and stumbling. Sebastian just wasn't as tight, and Janick, while great in couples, got a little lost here in the shuffle.

The Final Roundup:

So the choreographers here really like to have the guys shirtless (or almost) in the dances, don't they? Not complaining. Just mentioning!

Ranking the Couples:
Best of the Night: Janick and Mackenzie's Hip-Hop
2nd: Danielle and Denys' Contemporary
3rd: Amanda and Jeff's Contemporary
4th - Worst of the Night: Nathalie and Sebastian's Cha-Cha-Cha

Best Solos:
1st: Denys
2nd: Danielle
3rd: Amanda
4th: Mackenzie

Should Go Home: Janick and Sebastian.

Here's the current unfair ranking of the remaining dancers at this point, based on everything so far (last week's ranking in Parentheses):

1. (tie) Mackenzie (1), Denys (1)
3. Amanda (3)
4. Danielle (6)
5. Nathalie (5)
6. Jeff (9)
7. Janick (10)
8. Sebastian (7)

Top 8 Group Dance
Choreographed by: Jean-Marc Généreux and France Mousseau
Style: Cha-Cha-Cha
Song: "Take it Off" - Kesha
Grade: A

So it kinda showed everything and didn't hold back on the gratuitous bits but I kinda enjoyed that sexy Cha-Cha-Cha. Nice to see Jean-Marc and France make the style look funky.

I wish we could have more moments with Denys and Mackenzie though. They always look hot together, including last week's group dance.

Solos

Danielle Gardner
Style: Contemporary
Song: "This Woman's Work" - Kate Bush
Grade: A-

Amanda Cleghorn
Style: Contemporary
Song: "Summertime" -
Grade: B+

Nathalie Heath
Style: Contemporary
Song: "Possession" - Sarah MacLachlan
Grade: A

Janick Arseneau
Style: Contemporary
Song: "Again Again" - Lady Gaga
Grade: A-

Jeff Mortensen
Style: Contemporary
Song: "" -
Grade: A-

Sebastian Mersch
Style: Contemporary
Song: "Cooler Than Me" - Mike Posner
Grade: A-

Denys Drozdyuk
Style: Ballroom
Song: "We Will Rock You" - Queen
Grade: B+

Mackenzie Green
Style: Contemporary
Song: "Ghosts 'n' Stuff" - Deadmau5 feat. Rob Swire
Grade: A-

The Results

Guess what? Instead of kicking off 2 dancers, they're kicking off 4 to stay on schedule and finish on time (since they started off with a Top 22 that threw the schedule off). You'd think CTV would just add an extra week of episodes or something instead of cutting half the dancers in one fell swoop and NOT telling us until the votes were in.

So alas, Canada voted out Danielle Gardner and Nathalie Heath.

And Sebastian Mersch and Mackenzie Green.

Which means of my Top 5, 3 of those were voted out. Leaving only Denys and Amanda left with Jeff and Janick.

HOW THE HELL DID MACKENZIE GET VOTED OUT? I can see Danielle or Nathalie getting voted out, but not BOTH. HOW THE HELL DID MACKENZIE GET VOTED OUT? I am NOT happy.

Well, at least it makes my life easier by leaving Denys now clearly in 1st place on my list, with Amanda in 2nd.

I can not believe it. It is really underhanded of CTV. To change the conditions of voting AFTER the votes are in is TAMPERING. In the U.S. version they would at least announce a double elimination BEFORE the voting started. Assuming Nathalie and Mackenzie were in 3rd place I would almost go so far as to say they have grounds to sue CTV.
